The “No Operating System Found” message means the PC could not find a bootable operating system through its current boot path. It does not prove that Windows or your files have been erased. First check whether firmware detects the internal drive; if it does, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Startup Repair before considering more disruptive recovery options.
What the error means—and what it does not
The message indicates that the computer did not find a bootable operating-system entry on the selected device or boot path. Possible causes include a wrong boot device or entry, a firmware boot-mode mismatch, a drive the firmware no longer detects, or damaged Windows boot configuration. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis: Microsoft Q&A discussions describe such cases but cannot identify the cause on a particular PC. Microsoft Q&A: “No Operating System Found”

The first important distinction is whether the computer’s firmware can see its internal HDD or SSD. If it cannot, Windows boot-file repair is unlikely to address the underlying problem. If it can, try Windows’ recovery tools.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with the boot path and firmware checks
- Remove other possible boot devices. Shut the PC down and disconnect nonessential USB storage, memory cards, and external drives. Restart it.
- Check firmware setup. If the message persists, enter BIOS or UEFI setup using the key shown by the computer maker. Common keys include F2, F10, F12, Esc, or Del, but the key and menu vary by manufacturer.
- See whether the internal drive is listed. If it is, check the boot priority and select the expected Windows boot entry. On many UEFI installations, that entry is named Windows Boot Manager.
- Keep the installed boot mode in mind. Do not switch between UEFI and Legacy/CSM simply to experiment. An installation set up for one mode may not start in the other.
Record the original settings before changing anything. Avoid random changes to Secure Boot, SATA mode, partition flags, or disk layout; an incorrect setting can create a new startup problem. The exact firmware menus and appropriate settings depend on the PC and its existing Windows installation.

If firmware does not detect the internal drive
Treat an absent drive as a possible connection or hardware problem, not as proof that the Windows bootloader needs rebuilding. Firmware menus differ, and a community post cannot diagnose whether a specific drive has failed. If the PC is under warranty, contact the manufacturer.
If important files on the drive do not exist elsewhere, avoid formatting or initializing it, reinstalling Windows onto it, or repeatedly writing data to it. Those actions can make recovery harder. Seek qualified repair or data-recovery advice before proceeding. A replacement drive may make the computer usable again, but it will not recover files from the old drive. Any replacement must match the computer’s supported interface and physical size.
If the drive is detected, open Windows Recovery Environment
Windows may open WinRE automatically after startup failures. If it does not, use Windows installation media made on another working PC, then boot the affected computer from that media. At Windows Setup, choose Repair your PC to reach recovery tools; do not begin an installation if your goal is repair. Microsoft explains how to access recovery tools from installation media in its Windows Recovery Environment guide.
Microsoft says a USB drive of at least 8 GB can be used to create Windows installation media. The media-creation process erases the selected USB drive, so use a blank one or copy its contents elsewhere first. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the Windows version offered and use the PC maker’s guidance for selecting the USB device in the firmware boot menu: Create installation media for Windows.
Run Startup Repair first
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, then follow the on-screen directions.
- If the PC requests a BitLocker recovery key, retrieve the key before continuing.
Microsoft describes Startup Repair as a tool that scans for and attempts to fix common startup problems, including boot configuration issues. It is an attempt, not a guarantee. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance.

If Startup Repair does not fix the boot error
Choose the next step based on what changed recently, whether Windows is detected in recovery, and how important the files are. Recovery options do not all have the same effect on files and installed programs.
- System Restore: If the issue began after a recent change and WinRE offers a suitable restore point, consider using it to return system settings to an earlier state.
- Reset or reinstall: Before selecting either, read the specific option’s explanation and check whether it preserves personal files. Back up accessible data first. Some recovery choices can result in data loss.
- Command-line boot repairs: Do not assume a bootrec command sequence applies to every PC. Drive letters in recovery can differ from those in normal Windows, and the relevant steps depend in part on whether Windows uses UEFI/GPT or Legacy BIOS/MBR. A command copied from a discussion may not fit your system.
Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guide describes choices for a PC that will not start and warns that some options can cause data loss. If firmware cannot see the drive, diagnostics report failure, or recovery tools cannot find a Windows installation, professional diagnosis is a safer next step when the files matter.
Windows 10, 8, and 7: what may differ
The current Microsoft recovery guidance linked above applies principally to Windows 10 and Windows 11. The recovery menus and instructions are not verified as identical across every Windows 8 or Windows 7 edition, manufacturer recovery image, or PC firmware. If a screen or option differs, consult the computer maker’s documentation rather than assuming the menu path is universal.
There is also a separate support consideration for Windows 10: Microsoft states that free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. That status does not explain this boot error, but it matters when deciding whether to continue using the installation. Microsoft: Recovery options in Windows.
