Choose a Chromebook if the work you need to do fits ChromeOS apps and web services; choose a Windows 11 laptop if essential software or peripherals require Windows. Chromebooks can work offline in supported apps, so they are not simply “online-only.” Either way, check the exact model’s hardware and support dates before buying.
Start with the apps and devices you need
Make a list of the applications, files, and peripherals you rely on: for example, a particular work program, printer, scanner, or specialist device. Check each product’s current system requirements and supported operating systems. A laptop’s operating-system label alone does not guarantee that a specific app or accessory will work.

Windows 11 is the safer category-level choice when a required application or peripheral depends on Windows. That does not mean every Windows laptop will run every workload well: the software’s requirements may exceed Windows’ own minimums.
What work can you do offline?
Some Chromebook apps are designed to work without an internet connection. Google says, “You can use offline-ready apps to keep using a Chromebook when it’s not connected to the Internet.” That does not mean every app, feature, or file will be available offline. Check the specific apps and files you need, and confirm that your workflow still works without a connection.

Chromebooks run ChromeOS and are designed around Google services and cloud storage. Some Chromebook models also support Android apps through Google Play, but app availability depends on the device and the individual app.
Compare the actual laptop, not just the category
There is no established category-wide winner for price, speed, or battery life. Those comparisons require specific models and configurations; compare machines that can actually handle the same tasks and have the storage you need. A low starting price or a minimum operating-system specification is not, by itself, evidence that a laptop is a good fit.

Check how long the device will receive updates
Chromebooks: use the model-specific update date
Google’s current policy provides 10 years of automatic updates for Chromebooks, but the schedule is specific to each device. Look up the exact model rather than assuming that every Chromebook has the same time remaining. Google also warns that eligible older devices using extended updates may lose support for Android apps and the Play Store.
Windows: focus on supported Windows 11 machines
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says a Windows 10 PC will still work, but standard free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 have ended. For a current purchase, look for a machine that supports Windows 11 rather than treating a Windows 10 laptop as an equivalent supported choice.

Understand Windows 11’s minimum requirements
Microsoft’s Windows 11 baseline includes a compatible processor on its approved list, at least 4 GB of RAM, and at least 64 GB of storage, along with other requirements such as compatible graphics. These are minimum operating-system requirements, not a recommendation for demanding applications. Check the requirements for the software you plan to run and select hardware that meets them.
For personal use, Windows 11 Home and Pro require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. If that setup requirement matters to you, account for it before choosing a machine.

Is a Chromebook suitable for development?
Google documents an optional Debian-based Linux environment on supported Chromebooks, with access to command-line tools, code editors, and IDEs. It can be useful for some development workflows, but it is not the same as unrestricted Linux or Windows desktop compatibility. Some hardware features are unsupported, and a work or school administrator may disable or restrict Linux. Confirm device support and your tools’ requirements before relying on it.
Make the decision in four checks
- List your must-have software and peripherals. Check each publisher’s or manufacturer’s current compatibility information.
- Test your offline needs. Identify which apps and files must work without a connection, then verify them individually.
- Check the exact model’s support horizon. For a Chromebook, look up its automatic update schedule; for Windows, choose a Windows 11-eligible laptop.
- Compare usable configurations. Match the hardware and storage to your real workload, then compare current prices for models that meet those needs.
Who should buy which?
Choose a Chromebook if
- Your essential work fits ChromeOS apps and web services.
- You have checked that the specific apps and files you need are available offline, if offline work matters.
- The exact model has an update schedule that meets your needs.
Choose a Windows 11 laptop if
- An essential application or peripheral requires Windows.
- Your intended software’s hardware requirements point to a specific Windows configuration.
- You have confirmed Windows 11 eligibility and accounted for its personal-use setup requirements.
If neither category clearly fits, let the compatibility checks decide: start with the software and devices you cannot replace, then compare specific laptops that support them.
