For work that runs in a current browser, either a Windows laptop or a MacBook can be a good fit. The deciding factors are whether your specific apps and workplace policies support the device, whether you need Windows-only software, and which laptop configuration suits your budget and setup. Neither operating system is universally better for web-based work.
Will your web-based work run on both?
Often, yes—but “web-based work” can mean anything from email and documents to managed logins, video meetings, remote desktops, and specialized business apps. Support for familiar services on both platforms is a useful sign, not a guarantee that every employer’s tools, security settings, or peripherals will work.

Microsoft lists Windows and macOS support for OneDrive and recommends current Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari for its website. Its business, education, and government Microsoft 365 requirements also list current desktop browsers, with requirements varying by plan and operating system. Check your organization’s actual plan and device policy rather than assuming a general browser requirement applies to your setup. Microsoft’s OneDrive system requirements were last updated June 23, 2026; see also its Microsoft 365 requirements.

Minimum requirements change, especially for older laptops. Google’s Chrome requirements list Windows 11 and macOS 13 Ventura or later among supported computer operating systems. Before buying or relying on an older machine, confirm that its operating system can run the browser version your workplace requires. Google’s Chrome system requirements provide current minimums.

For one specific example, Microsoft’s Windows App documentation lists Edge and Chrome for Windows and macOS, Safari for macOS, and Firefox for Windows and macOS, subject to minimum-version and other service requirements. Its requirements include browser-age limits and AVC and WebGL conditions effective June 15, 2025. These are requirements for Windows App web access, not universal rules for every web service. Check Microsoft’s Windows App browser requirements if that service is part of your workflow.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Which browsers and minimum operating-system versions are supported?
- Are there required extensions, identity logins, VPNs, security tools, or device-management settings?
- Do remote desktop, video meetings, or specialized web apps have platform-specific requirements?
- Are any peripherals or drivers required, and are they supported on macOS as well as Windows?
- Does your employer permit personally owned devices, or does it require a managed or approved model?
When a Windows-only requirement changes the choice
If a required program or device driver runs only on Windows, a Windows laptop is generally the more direct option. A browser-based version or remote Windows environment may be an alternative, but verify that it supports the exact features, performance, licensing, and peripherals you need.

Compare the actual laptops, not just the operating systems
Specifications and battery estimates below are manufacturer claims for the cited configurations, not independent reviews or a controlled comparison. Product generations and configurations can change, so confirm the current listing before purchase.
| Example configuration | Weight | Ports listed | Manufacturer battery estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air, Apple technical specifications | 2.7 pounds | Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack | Up to 15 hours of wireless web use, Apple’s stated maximum |
| 13-inch Surface Laptop configuration on Microsoft’s product page | 2.7 pounds | Two USB-C/USB 3.2 ports, USB-A, and a headphone jack | Up to 18 hours of active web usage, Microsoft’s stated maximum |
Apple’s and Microsoft’s battery figures come from different manufacturer tests, so they do not establish which laptop lasts longer in a like-for-like comparison. Microsoft says its Surface Laptop test used twelve popular websites across multiple open tabs at 150 nits of brightness and cautions that battery life varies. See Apple’s MacBook Air technical specifications and Microsoft’s Surface Laptop product page for the cited figures and current configuration details.

Ports and desk setup
Match the ports on the exact model to the screens, chargers, audio gear, and USB devices you use. The cited MacBook Air specifications list two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports; if your setup needs more wired connections, check whether a compatible hub or dock is suitable. The cited Surface Laptop configuration lists USB-A as well as USB-C, which may suit some existing peripherals without an adapter. Port layouts vary across models and generations.
Price and configuration
Compare the specific configurations you can buy, including memory, storage, warranty, and support—not a generic “Mac versus Windows” price. The cited product pages do not establish a like-for-like price comparison. Check current prices and availability for models with the specifications your work requires.
Best Value
- 【Powerful Performance】Equipped with an Intel N150 CPU, featuring up to 4.4 GHz, ensuring efficient and powerful multitasking capabilities.

Which should you choose?
Choose a MacBook if
- Your required apps, browser, security tools, and peripherals are confirmed to work on macOS.
- You prefer the particular MacBook’s hardware or its fit with the devices and accounts you already use.
- You do not depend on native Windows software—or you have verified that an approved Windows option meets your needs.
Choose a Windows laptop if
- Your job requires native Windows software, a Windows-only driver, or a workplace-approved Windows setup.
- The ports on a particular Windows model better match your peripherals.
- Your organization’s managed-device or security policy specifically requires Windows.
Either can work if
Your workflow is browser-first and your employer confirms that its apps, login, security requirements, and peripherals support both operating systems. In that case, decide based on the exact laptop’s configuration, price, ports, weight, and your own preferences—not on a claim that one platform is inherently better for web work.

- Identify the ports and display connections your desk setup needs; compare them with the exact laptop configuration.
- Compare current price, memory, storage, warranty, and support for the models you are considering.
