These changes reduce power use, but the extra runtime varies by laptop and workload; settings cannot restore capacity a battery has lost through age and use.
Which changes should you try first?
For a quick, reversible start, use Energy saver and Best power efficiency while unplugged, then lower brightness and set the display to turn off sooner. These choices trade some performance or screen comfort for lower power use. You can adjust them again when you need more responsiveness or a brighter display.

- Turn on Energy saver. Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver. Turn it on when needed, or set the battery level at which it turns on. If available, enable the option to lower screen brightness while Energy saver is on. Microsoft says Energy saver manages system processes and power use to balance performance with longer runtime. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance describes the feature.
- Choose Best power efficiency. Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best power efficiency. If you need more speed, use Balanced or Best performance instead.
- Dim the display and shorten its timeout. Lower brightness to a comfortable level in Settings > System > Display. Then go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts and shorten Turn my screen off after for battery operation.
- Set the laptop to sleep sooner. In the same timeout section, choose a shorter battery-powered interval before the device sleeps. This is especially useful if you often leave the laptop idle between tasks.
Windows may not show every option on every laptop. Power mode availability can depend on the power plan, hardware, or manufacturer. If you cannot find a control, check your laptop maker’s documentation rather than assuming the setting is available on all devices. Microsoft outlines power-mode choices and availability caveats in its power mode guidance.
How should you adjust the display?
The display is a practical place to reduce power use, but choose changes that do not make the laptop unpleasant to use.

Brightness and automatic adjustment
Set brightness as low as remains comfortable for your room and task. Some Windows devices support content-adaptive brightness or adjustment based on ambient light; the available controls depend on the screen and hardware. Look under Settings > System > Display for brightness or automatic adjustment options. For an external monitor, brightness may need to be changed using the monitor’s own controls. Microsoft’s brightness and color guidance explains the available Windows controls.
Refresh rate
If your laptop is set to a high refresh rate, consider a lower rate for static work such as reading or writing. A lower rate can make motion look less smooth, so switch back when that tradeoff matters. Microsoft notes that higher refresh rates use more power in its battery-saving tips.

Dark theme on OLED screens
A dark theme or background may help reduce display power on an OLED laptop. Microsoft specifically calls out OLED displays for this potential benefit; do not assume it will make a meaningful difference on every laptop screen. Treat it as an optional display preference, not a guaranteed battery fix.
How do you find apps using battery?
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and review the per-app figures. If an app is using power in the background and you do not need it to sync or send notifications, check whether Windows offers a background activity control for that app and limit it if appropriate.

Background controls are not identical for every app. Restricting background activity can delay notifications or syncing, so avoid changing it for apps that need to stay current. Microsoft covers app battery use and background options in its Windows battery-saving guidance.
When are connectivity and video settings worth changing?
- Airplane mode: Turn it on when you do not need internet or other wireless communications. The tradeoff is losing those connections until you turn them back on.
- Video playback: When watching video on battery, use battery-focused playback options if Windows offers them, such as lower resolution. This can reduce image quality, so it is a situational choice rather than a setting to use for all work.
Microsoft’s battery-saving tips describe these as ways to reduce power use when the related connectivity or media tradeoff is acceptable.

What if you are using Windows 10?
Windows 10 uses different battery-feature names and navigation in Microsoft’s version-specific guidance; older instructions may refer to Battery saver rather than Windows 11’s Energy saver. Follow the Windows 10 directions in Microsoft’s battery-saving tips instead of assuming Windows 11 paths will match. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, as noted in its power mode documentation.

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over charge and discharge cycles, so an older battery may hold less charge and need charging more often. Power-saving settings reduce the energy the laptop uses; they do not restore lost battery capacity. If runtime remains poor after reasonable settings changes, battery wear or a device-specific issue may be involved rather than a setting you have missed. Microsoft explains battery aging in its Windows 11 power settings guidance.
