If Windows still offers an update after you installed it, the update may not have completed successfully, or Windows Update may not be detecting it correctly. Check the update’s history and error code, restart the PC, and then check for updates again. If the same update remains, verify that it applies to your Windows version and device, and consider whether an organization manages updates on the PC.
Why Windows may offer the same update again
A repeated offer does not confirm that Windows has both installed and recognized the update. Microsoft identifies an unsuccessful installation and update-detection settings that cannot recognize the update as possible causes. A restart may also be needed to finish pending update actions.

On a work or school PC, the offer may depend on update-management settings and rollout timing. The cause cannot be identified from the repeated offer alone; the update’s KB number, Windows version and build, error code, and management status help narrow it down.

Check the update’s status and error details
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. The wording or layout may vary by Windows release.
- Find the update by name or KB number. Check whether it is listed as failed and note any error code.
- Use that exact update name or KB number when checking whether the package applies to your Windows version and device.
Microsoft says the same update may be offered repeatedly if it was not installed correctly or Windows Update settings cannot detect it: Windows Update or Microsoft Update repeatedly offers the same update.

Restart, troubleshoot, and check again
- Restart Windows to allow pending update actions to finish.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. For Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the Get Help app. Microsoft also documents settings-based troubleshooter steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11; follow the instructions for your version in its Windows Update troubleshooting guide.
- After troubleshooting, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install any available items and restart if Windows requests it.
If the same update is still available
Verify that the update applies to this PC
Check that the package is intended for the installed Windows version and processor architecture. Confirm that any prerequisites are present and that the update is not already installed. Microsoft’s guidance on update applicability and installation explains why version, architecture, and prerequisite mismatches matter.
Ask an administrator about managed updates
If this is a work or school device, ask the IT administrator whether the update source, deployment configuration, or rollout schedule determines what appears. Microsoft notes that update offers can depend on factors such as Windows build and branch, locale, architecture, and management configuration, including Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) deployments. Avoid changing organizational update settings yourself. See Microsoft’s Windows update management guidance.

Keep details for further diagnosis
If the problem continues, record the KB number, Windows version and build, and any error code. Windows Update and servicing logs can help identify whether the issue occurs while the update is offered, downloaded, installed, or awaiting a restart. Microsoft documents where to find and how to interpret relevant Windows Update logs.
