Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome Windows Home PCs support Device Encryption, but not all do. If your drive is encrypted, Macrium Reflect can image it—but the image file is unencrypted unless you separately enable backup-file encryption. Before a hardware change or recovery, confirm that you can access the BitLocker recovery key.
Does Windows Home have BitLocker?
Windows Home may include Device Encryption, a simpler feature available on a wider range of devices. It is not supported on every PC. Microsoft lists full BitLocker Drive Encryption for Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions; instructions that say to open “Manage BitLocker” may therefore not match what a Home user sees. Microsoft explains the distinction between Device Encryption and BitLocker.

On supported devices, Device Encryption commonly turns on during setup or after signing in with a Microsoft or work or school account. Check the device rather than assuming encryption is enabled. In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption, if that page is available. The page indicates whether Device Encryption is on. The exact controls can vary by device and Windows edition. Microsoft’s Device Encryption guidance describes availability and behavior.
Where is the BitLocker recovery key?
The recovery key is a 48-digit number that can unlock a protected drive when Windows requires recovery. Microsoft says Device Encryption keys are commonly associated with the Microsoft or work or school account used during setup. Before changing hardware or firmware, or starting recovery, locate the key and make sure you can access it from a separate device. Microsoft’s recovery-key instructions explain where to look.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Microsoft lists several ways to save a recovery key: a Microsoft account, a USB flash drive, a file, or a printed copy. Keep a USB or printed copy somewhere other than with the computer. Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost key, so verify the saved copy before you need it. See Microsoft’s recovery-key backup options.
Why might Windows ask for the recovery key?
A recovery prompt does not necessarily mean someone has tampered with the PC. BitLocker can request the key when it detects a security risk or a hardware or software state change. Firmware updates, hardware replacement, and recovery operations are sensible times to check key access in advance. Microsoft describes when recovery may be triggered.

If Windows will not start and you use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), the key is required for most recovery options when BitLocker is enabled. Do not assume that having a backup image makes the recovery key unnecessary; the key may still be needed to access the encrypted source volume or use recovery tools. Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can Macrium Reflect image a BitLocker-encrypted drive?
Yes. Macrium says Reflect can image, restore, and clone Microsoft BitLocker-encrypted volumes. Its documentation says the resulting image is in an unencrypted state, even when the source volume was encrypted. If someone gains access to that image file, source-drive encryption alone will not protect its contents. Macrium’s BitLocker imaging guidance recommends enabling AES backup-file encryption. The same article notes a restriction when restoring an encrypted source volume to a Windows dynamic volume.

Keep source, recovery, and image encryption separate
| What is protected | What it means | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Windows source volume | Device Encryption or BitLocker protects data on the original drive. | Check whether encryption is enabled on this PC and edition. |
| Access during recovery | Windows or recovery tools may need the recovery key to unlock the encrypted source. | Confirm that the 48-digit key is saved and accessible off the PC. |
| Macrium image file | Reflect images BitLocker volumes in an unencrypted state unless backup-file encryption is enabled. | Enable AES encryption for the image if it needs protection at rest, and retain the password securely. |
These are separate protections: encrypting the Windows drive does not automatically encrypt an image made from it, and encrypting the image does not replace the Windows recovery key.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where should you store an image backup?
A separate external USB drive is one practical destination for image files. Keep it disconnected when it is not being used for backup where feasible, and protect the image itself if it contains sensitive data. The image destination is distinct from a USB flash drive used to store a recovery key; Microsoft also supports saving the key to an account, file, or printout. Macrium’s image guide describes choosing a destination folder, while Microsoft lists recovery-key storage options. These sources do not establish a required drive capacity or specific drive model.

Which Macrium Reflect version is current?
Macrium’s materials identify Reflect X as its current product family. Reflect 8 Home reached end of life on December 31, 2025, and Macrium says it no longer receives security updates or support. Do not treat Reflect 8 Home as a currently supported choice. Macrium’s lifecycle notice gives the end-of-life date; its product comparison and licensing information identifies Reflect X Home as an annual-license offering for non-commercial use. Check Macrium’s current terms before purchasing, since availability and licensing can change.
