If “doesn’t get in my way” means blocking unapproved apps without interrupting you with connection pop-ups, TinyWall is the closest match among these options. Its project describes that quiet allow-list approach, but also says it is in maintenance mode. You may not need another app at all: Microsoft Defender Firewall is already built into Windows 10 and 11, while simplewall and GlassWire suit people who want more rule control or network visibility.
Which Windows firewall fits your preferred level of interruption?
| Option | How it works | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Firewall | Built into Windows; manage it through Windows Security, with advanced rules available for inbound and outbound traffic. | People who want a built-in baseline and no extra firewall app. | Outbound traffic is allowed by default unless a rule blocks it, so setting up detailed outbound control takes manual work. |
| TinyWall | A quiet allow-list model blocks apps that have not been explicitly allowed; the project says it avoids nagging connection pop-ups. | People who value low interruption and straightforward allow-list control. | The project describes itself as in maintenance mode. |
| simplewall | A Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) tool with rules and logging for allowed and dropped packets; it is not a control panel for Windows Firewall. | People comfortable managing filtering rules who want packet logging and a no-pop-up interface. | It requires administrator rights for correct operation, according to its README. |
| GlassWire | Provides network monitoring and app-access alerts, with modes including click-to-block, Ask-to-connect, and block-all. It controls Windows Firewall. | People who want to see network activity and receive alerts about apps. | Notifications can be more interruptive than a quiet allow-list workflow, although the guide describes notification controls and snoozing. |
Why start with Windows’ built-in firewall?
Microsoft Defender Firewall is already available on Windows 10 and Windows 11. In the Windows Security app, you can check firewall status, choose a network profile, allow an app through the firewall, open advanced settings, and restore defaults. See Microsoft’s guide to firewall and network protection in Windows Security.

The important distinction is between capability and default behavior: Windows Firewall can block outbound traffic, but its default policy allows outbound traffic unless a rule blocks it. Microsoft documents outbound program and service rules in its guide to configuring firewall rules with Group Policy. If you want to control which programs can connect out, you can create rules; you do not need to assume the firewall is incapable of doing so.

What makes TinyWall a quiet option?
TinyWall’s project describes a model in which apps must be explicitly allowed and says the interface avoids nagging connection pop-ups. The project’s version 3 announcement calls the absence of those pop-ups “a serious security feature.” The appeal is practical: instead of repeatedly asking what to do when an app connects, the tool favors quiet blocking and deliberate permission.
That approach is a good fit only if you are comfortable allowing trusted apps as needed. A program that has not been permitted may be blocked without a prompt asking you to decide at that moment. TinyWall’s version 3 announcement also describes handling for Windows Store apps.

The project repository says TinyWall is in maintenance mode. That is the project’s stated status; it is not evidence by itself that the software has been abandoned. It is, however, a relevant factor when choosing a firewall app and considering how much you want to rely on ongoing development. See the TinyWall project repository and its version 3 announcement.
When is simplewall a better fit?
simplewall uses Windows Filtering Platform, a Windows networking technology, rather than acting as a control panel for Microsoft Defender Firewall. Its README describes rules, logging for allowed and dropped packets, and a no-pop-up interface. It lists compatibility with Windows 7 SP1 and later, and says administrator rights are required for correct operation.

- Easier-Than-Ever Setup — Convenient and easy router management via web browser or the ASUS ExpertWiFi mobile app through Bluetooth setup.
- VLAN for Added Security —Each of the Ethernet ports can be assigned to one or more VLAN IDs that provides additional security for your business.
- Up to 3 WAN Ethernet Ports – 1 gigabit WAN port and 2 gigabit WAN/LAN ports with load balancing optimize multi-line broadband usage.
- Backup WAN for Stable Connectivity –The USB port can be used as a backup WAN by connecting it to a mobile phone with hotspot to maintain a reliable internet connection.
- Commercial-Grade Network Security and VPN — Secure public WiFi connections with Safe Browsing and VPN features. Enjoy a free-subscription ASUS AiProtection Pro, including robust intrusion prevention system (IPS) features like deep packet inspection (DPI) and virtual patching to block malicious traffic.
Choose it if you want to work directly with filtering rules and inspect packet decisions. If you mainly want a graphical way to manage Defender Firewall, note the distinction: simplewall is a separate WFP tool, not merely another view of the built-in firewall. Details and requirements are in the simplewall README.
When does GlassWire make more sense?
GlassWire emphasizes visibility: its product materials describe network monitoring and alerts when apps access the network. Its Ask-to-connect option can prompt you about an app, while its guide also documents click-to-block and block-all modes. That can help if you want to notice new app activity, but more alerts may feel less unobtrusive than a quiet allow-list approach.

GlassWire controls Windows Firewall; it does not replace or disable the Windows firewall service. Its guide says the app cannot enable or disable that firewall at the system level. If monitoring is your priority, review its product information and user guide to understand its modes and notification controls.

- Choose Microsoft Defender Firewall if built-in controls are enough and you do not want another app. Use its network profiles and app exceptions first; add advanced rules only when you have a clear reason.
- Consider TinyWall if avoiding connection pop-ups matters more than being asked about each new connection. Factor in the project’s maintenance-mode status.
- Consider simplewall if you want WFP rules and packet logs and are comfortable with a more technical tool that needs administrator rights.
- Consider GlassWire if seeing network activity and receiving app-access alerts are more valuable to you than minimizing notifications.
Before committing, ask yourself how you want new apps handled: blocked quietly, managed through rules, or surfaced with alerts. Also check whether the tool works alongside or controls Windows Firewall, and whether you are comfortable with its current project status and requirements. Those differences matter more than the generic label “firewall app.”
