Windows Features vs. Optional Features: What’s the Difference?

Windows Features and Optional features are related but separate Windows interfaces. Here’s where to find each and how to choose the right one for a component.

Windows Features is the classic dialog for switching selectable Windows components on or off; Optional features is a Settings page for viewing, adding, and removing optional components. They serve related purposes, but their catalogs are not guaranteed to match. Use the screen that lists the specific feature you need.

What “Windows Features” and “Optional features” mean

Search Start for Turn Windows features on or off to open the classic Windows Features dialog. In Windows 11, the Settings page is at Settings > Apps > Optional features. Microsoft describes optional components as items that may come preinstalled, be acquired on demand, or be manually added. The two interfaces therefore overlap in purpose, but they are not interchangeable views of one identical list.

Microsoft also uses Features on Demand (FODs) for an underlying family of addable Windows packages and capabilities. Microsoft Learn defines them as “Windows features that can be added at any time.” FOD is a package and servicing term, not another name for either user interface. For deployment, Microsoft documents adding capabilities to online or offline Windows images, including DISM /Add-Capability; the precise steps depend on the Windows release and servicing scenario. How the two interfaces differ

Question Windows Features dialog Optional features in Settings
How to open Search Start for “Windows features,” then select “Turn Windows features on or off.” Windows 11: Settings > Apps > Optional features. Windows 10 instructions may use Apps > Apps and Features > Optional features > Add a feature.
Typical use in Microsoft guidance Enable Virtual Machine Platform for virtualization. Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N, or inspect installed optional features.
What the interface does Lets you toggle selectable Windows components that are available for the installed edition and build. Shows optional components and, where available, lets you add or remove them.
Important limitation A component must appear in the dialog and be supported by the installed edition and build. The catalog, labels, and availability vary by Windows version and edition; some additions require a restart.

Which one should you use?

Start with the instructions for the named component rather than choosing a screen based on the word “feature.” Microsoft directs users to the classic dialog to enable Virtual Machine Platform, while it directs users to Settings Optional features to install the Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 or 11 N. • Need Virtual Machine Platform? Open “Turn Windows features on or off,” select the named item, choose OK, and restart if Windows asks.
  • Need the Media Feature Pack? First confirm that the PC runs a Windows N edition. The pack is intended for N editions, not as a general media add-on for every Windows installation.
  • Need a different component? Follow the current Microsoft instructions for that component and your specific Windows version. Do not assume that a missing entry can be enabled through the other interface.

How to find and manage Optional features

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
  2. Review the installed features or choose View features to find an available item. Labels can differ across builds.
  3. Select the feature and follow the on-screen prompts to add or remove it.

Microsoft documents this Settings route for the Media Feature Pack on Windows 11 N. Microsoft Support: Media Feature Pack for Windows N

Windows 10

Use the path in the instructions for the applicable Windows 10 build. Microsoft’s Windows 10 N directions use Settings > Apps > Apps and Features > Optional features > Add a feature. Windows 11 labels should not be assumed to match every Windows 10 release. Microsoft Support: Media Feature Pack for Windows N

What to check before adding or removing a feature

  • Edition and version: Check the installed edition and Windows release. Some components are edition-specific, and availability or preinstallation status changes between releases.
  • Whether something depends on it: Before removing a feature, check whether an app or workflow you use needs it.
  • Restart requirements: Windows may ask you to restart after changing a component. Installing the Media Feature Pack requires a restart, even if Windows does not prompt you.
  • Space expectations: Microsoft says removing optional features you do not use can reduce the storage needed for a feature update. The amount varies with update path and installed content; this does not establish a general speed or security improvement. Microsoft Support: Free up space for Windows updates

If the feature you need is missing

Check the exact Windows edition and build, then consult Microsoft’s instructions for that feature and release. Availability varies, and device policy can also affect whether components can be added. Do not treat absence from one list as proof that the component is safely obtainable through the other screen, or install it from an unrelated download. Microsoft’s Features on Demand catalog includes release-specific availability and preinstallation details; package sizes are approximate and vary by release and Reserved Storage configuration.
