Bitcoin’s realized price is an estimate of the average price at which the circulating supply last moved on-chain. Compare it with spot price to gauge aggregate unrealized profit or loss; use it as context for market conditions, not as proof that Bitcoin has reached a cycle top or bottom.
What Bitcoin’s realized price measures
Bitcoin’s realized price is an on-chain cost-basis estimate, not the current market price and not a record of what every holder actually paid. It starts with unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), which represent bitcoin that has not yet been spent. Each output is valued at the market price observed when it last moved on-chain. Adding those values gives realized capitalization; dividing that total by current supply gives realized price.

Realized price = realized capitalization ÷ current supply.

Its market metric documentation defines realized price as realized cap divided by current supply, while its Bitcoin Realized Price chart explains how to interpret it against spot price.

How to read realized price against spot price
- Spot price above realized price: the aggregate supply is valued above its last-moved cost-basis estimate, indicating aggregate unrealized profit under this metric.
- Spot price below realized price: the aggregate supply is valued below that reference, indicating aggregate unrealized loss.
- Prices near parity: the market price is close to the aggregate last-moved cost-basis reference.
These are statements about the supply in aggregate. They do not reveal an individual holder’s purchase price, tax position, or plans. Nor does every on-chain movement represent a market purchase: coins can move between addresses controlled by the same entity. Glassnode’s indicator documentation explains that entity-adjusted movement metrics exclude transfers estimated to be within the same entity because they do not correspond to real purchasing events and can distort mean purchasing-price calculations.
How realized price can add context to market cycles
Realized price is most useful as a reference line alongside spot price and the direction of realized capitalization. In Glassnode’s historical account, realized capitalization has tended to expand sharply in bull markets as coins last moved at lower prices change hands at higher prices. Bear markets have included plateaus or declines, as coins are repriced lower amid consolidation and gradual transfers of ownership. These are historical descriptions, not a rule that determines what happens next.

When reviewing a chart, consider three separate observations:
- Is spot materially above or below realized price, and does that relationship indicate aggregate unrealized profit or loss?
- Is realized capitalization rising, flattening, or falling?
- Does MVRV show a similar picture of market value relative to realized value?
Together, these observations describe market conditions. A crossing of spot and realized price does not by itself confirm a cycle transition, establish a reliable forecast, or prove that a market low or high is in place. Glassnode’s discussion of historical regimes appears in The Foundational On-chain Metric: The Realized Cap.

How MVRV relates to realized price
MVRV is the ratio of market value to realized value. Glassnode also expresses it as spot price divided by realized price, so it describes how far spot is from the aggregate last-moved cost-basis estimate. A value of 1 means parity.
| MVRV example | Relationship to realized price |
|---|---|
| 2.0 | Spot price is twice the average cost basis under the metric. |
| 1.0 | Spot price equals the average cost basis. |
| 0.85 | Spot price is 15% below the average cost basis. |
These are illustrative examples published by Glassnode, not current market readings. Glassnode says extreme MVRV values can help identify overheated or undervalued conditions and large deviations in profitability; that is the provider’s interpretive framing, not a verified trading rule. Its BTC Realized Price and MVRV chart shows the two measures together.

Which realized-price version answers your question?
The aggregate average is not the only view. Median and cohort measures describe different parts of the cost-basis distribution, so choose the view that fits the question rather than treating every version as interchangeable.

| View | What it measures | Useful comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Average realized price | Realized cap divided by current supply; an average last-moved cost basis. | The aggregate supply-weighted reference. |
| Median realized price | The midpoint acquisition-cost measure, rather than the average based on realized cap and current supply. | Whether the distribution’s midpoint differs from its average. |
| Realized price by age | Cost basis separated into age cohorts. | Recently moved supply compared with older supply. |
| Realized price by profit or loss | Cost basis categorized by unrealized profit-and-loss levels. | Which profitability groups are above or below spot. |
| Realized price by wallet size | Cost basis segmented by wallet-size group. | How smaller and larger wallet groups compare. |
Glassnode’s breakdown documentation describes these alternatives. It says breakdown metrics use an address-based approach for comparability across assets; an address group should not automatically be described as a known individual investor. These breakdowns add distribution detail, but still rely on last-moved-price conventions.

What realized price cannot tell you
- It is not a verified record of the fiat amount each current holder paid; it values outputs at the price when they last moved on-chain.
- It cannot show whether a specific holder is in profit, has realized gains, or intends to sell.
- It cannot establish that a bull or bear market has ended, or forecast the next move.
- A live value needs to be read from a current chart or data source and dated; the metric’s definition alone does not supply a current market reading.
For live context, inspect a current realized-price chart alongside spot and MVRV, and note the chart’s date and any provider-specific definitions before drawing conclusions.
