If Extend Volume is greyed out in Windows 10 or 11, first check the disk map: the unallocated space must be on the same disk and immediately to the right of the volume you want to enlarge. Also confirm Disk Management is running with administrator permissions and that the volume uses NTFS or ReFS. These are the main requirements behind the unavailable command.
Check the disk layout first
Open Disk Management and find the volume you want to extend. Look for a black Unallocated region on the same disk. It must sit directly after the target volume; if another partition is between them, Disk Management cannot extend the target into that space. Unallocated space on a different disk does not count.

Microsoft Learn states that unallocated space must be “located immediately after the volume that you want to extend” and must be on the same disk. The guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft Learn: Extend a basic or dynamic volume.

Confirm Disk Management is elevated
Administrator permissions are required for the operation. Right-click Start and choose Disk Management. If you cannot open it that way, search for diskmgmt.msc from the taskbar, then choose Run as administrator. Microsoft says Disk Management works the same way in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Check the file system and disk capacity
File system
Microsoft documents extending volumes formatted as NTFS or ReFS. A volume using another file system cannot be extended through this procedure. Microsoft’s stated route is to move or back up the files and reformat the volume, but formatting destroys data, so do not use it as a quick troubleshooting step. Verify the file system and make a complete backup before considering that option. Microsoft Learn: Extend a basic or dynamic volume; Microsoft Support: Disk Management in Windows.
Disks larger than 2 TB
If the disk is larger than 2 TB and you need to use capacity beyond 2 TB, Microsoft says it must use the GPT partition style. Changing a disk’s partition style can affect its contents and boot configuration; back up important data and follow Microsoft’s conversion instructions before making a change. Microsoft Learn: Extend a basic or dynamic volume.

Choose a fix based on what you find
Unallocated space is adjacent and requirements are met
- In Disk Management, right-click the target volume and select Extend Volume.
- In the wizard, choose how much available space to add. It defaults to using all available space, but you can select a smaller amount.
- Review the selection and finish the wizard.
The same resizing can be done in an elevated PowerShell session with Microsoft’s documented Get-PartitionSupportedSize and Resize-Partition commands. The example uses the maximum supported size; verify the drive letter and target partition before running any command. See Microsoft’s PowerShell instructions.
Another partition sits between the volume and the free space
- Keep the existing layout: Leave the space separate and create a new volume in it. This is a Microsoft-listed alternative when extending is not possible.
- Remove the intervening partition: This may make the space adjacent, but deleting a volume deletes its files. Identify the partition and move or back up anything important before deleting it. Do not delete a system, recovery, or data partition unless you understand what it contains and the consequences.
- Move the intervening volume: Microsoft identifies third-party partitioning software capable of moving volumes as another option, but does not endorse a particular tool. A partition mover addresses the non-adjacent-space problem; it does not fix an unsupported file system, insufficient permissions, or other unmet requirements.
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and 11 and were last updated June 11, 2025. Microsoft Learn: Extend a basic or dynamic volume.
