Microsoft says the two approaches will coexist and that it is continuing to develop both. The practical decision is which workflow suits each device population—not whether to replace Autopilot everywhere.
What changes—and what does not
Windows Autopilot device preparation is a separate deployment option, not a mandatory successor that invalidates existing profiles. You can use it alongside classic Windows Autopilot, but an individual device follows one workflow for a deployment. Microsoft’s device preparation FAQ addresses both the migration question and whether investment in classic Autopilot is ending; it says neither that migration is required nor that classic Autopilot is being abandoned.

The two workflows also use different targeting mechanisms. Device preparation uses an Intune policy assigned to a user group, with an Intune Provisioning Client-owned device security group specified in the policy. During deployment, the device is added to that group. Classic Autopilot uses a deployment profile and Enrollment Status Page (ESP), and requires device registration. Microsoft’s current comparison lays out the distinctions.

Which workflow fits each deployment?
Choose by the requirements of a device population. Device preparation may suit straightforward Windows 11, Microsoft Entra-joined deployments; classic Autopilot remains relevant when a required mode, join type, or specialized device scenario is outside device preparation’s support.

Check applications, scripts, and targeting before choosing
Application and script payload
Microsoft’s comparison lists a limit of 25 essential applications and 10 essential PowerShell scripts for device preparation, versus up to 100 applications for classic Autopilot. Microsoft’s release notes say the device preparation maximum increased to 25 apps on January 30, 2026. Treat these as documented limits, not a prediction of install duration or success rate.
For device preparation, Microsoft lists line-of-business, Win32, supported Microsoft Store/WinGet, Microsoft 365, and Enterprise App Catalog application types. Confirm that each required app and script is supported and that the entire payload fits the current limits in your target tenant. A dependency on a particular app type or a larger payload may make classic Autopilot the better fit for that population.

Policy assignment and group ownership
Device preparation policies target user groups, while the policy identifies the device group used during deployment. Verify that the Intune Provisioning Client owns that group and that the intended users and devices resolve to the expected policy. This is a different targeting model from classic Autopilot’s registered-device profile and ESP; do not assume that an existing profile assignment automatically becomes an equivalent device preparation policy.
Understand association and which deployment path wins
When the two services are configured in the same environment, association state matters. Microsoft says an associated device follows device preparation. If a device is not associated, its Autopilot profile takes precedence. Include both registered and unregistered test devices in a pilot where relevant, and confirm the selected flow rather than inferring it from policy configuration alone.
Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 release note describes device association as binding a physical Windows 11 device to the organization before enrollment. The feature is not supported on virtual machines. The release note lists Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 with KB5120998 or later for association; those are association-specific requirements, not a substitute for checking the requirements of device preparation generally. Verify OS, tenant, and licensing requirements
Microsoft’s comparison lists Windows 11 24H2 or later, or Windows 11 22H2/23H2 with KB5035942 or later, for device preparation. Because association has its own newer OS requirement, check the exact Windows build and feature combination you plan to use. Requirements can change; consult Microsoft’s current comparison and release notes when validating a rollout.

Classic Autopilot depends on supported Windows, Microsoft Entra ID, and a mobile device management service such as Intune. Microsoft lists eligible subscriptions that include Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Microsoft 365 F1/F3, qualifying education and enterprise subscriptions, EMS E3/E5, Intune for Education, or Entra ID P1/P2 with Intune or another MDM, depending on the scenario. The appropriate subscription, license assignment, and tenant configuration still matter. Use Microsoft’s Windows Autopilot requirements for the applicable classic Autopilot scenario; do not assume its requirements automatically establish device preparation eligibility.

- Inventory the estate. Record existing Autopilot profiles, device populations, join types, Windows versions, and the deployment modes each population needs.
- Identify classic-only dependencies. Flag hybrid join, pre-provisioning, self-deploying, existing-device deployment, HoloLens, Teams Meeting Room, or other specialized requirements. Keep those populations on classic Autopilot unless Microsoft’s current documentation confirms the needed device preparation support.
- Validate candidate device preparation populations. Check policy and user-group targeting, the Provisioning Client-owned device group, app types and counts, script count, licensing, networking, and the specific Windows update prerequisites for the features in use.
- Pilot with physical devices and a small user group. Test the intended enrollment paths, including association behavior and any existing Autopilot registrations. Confirm which workflow each device actually starts.
- Review the appropriate reports before scaling. Compare completion and failure information in the device preparation deployment report and classic Autopilot report. Document which populations use each workflow and why.
What recent updates mean for rollout planning
Microsoft’s September 14, 2026 release notes describe changes to BitLocker behavior during OOBE, an immediate Intune Management Extension sync after OOBE, and more resilient device check-in after network loss. These notes describe product changes and intended reliability improvements; they do not establish a measured failure-rate reduction or a guaranteed provisioning-time improvement. Check the release notes for the current status before relying on a particular behavior.
Device preparation’s near real-time reporting can help administrators observe deployments sooner, while classic Autopilot reporting is not real-time. Neither reporting description establishes that one workflow is universally faster or more reliable. Validate the outcome against your own applications, network, identity setup, and device groups.
