Yes. Windows App can connect to a remote PC from supported Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad, Android, ChromeOS, and Meta Quest devices. For a direct PC connection, you need a network path to the host and an account allowed to sign in to it; you do not have to sign in to Windows App. The host also needs Remote Desktop enabled and must meet Windows’ host requirements.
What you need for a direct remote PC connection
- A supported client: Check the operating system and minimum version for the device you will connect from.
- An eligible host: The remote PC must meet the host requirements and have Remote Desktop enabled.
- Host credentials: You need a user account permitted to access the remote PC. Signing in to Windows App itself is not required for this connection type.
- Network connectivity: The client must be able to reach the remote PC. Workplace networks may add their own access controls.
These requirements describe a direct connection to a remote PC, not access to an assigned Windows 365 Cloud PC, Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Dev Box, or Remote Desktop Services resource. Which devices can run Windows App?
Microsoft’s remote-PC prerequisites list these minimum client versions in the documentation checked on October 7, 2026. Device support can depend on the platform and workflow, and the device maker must still actively support the device.

Does the remote PC need Windows Pro?
For ordinary incoming Remote Desktop connections, Microsoft’s general setup guidance says the host PC must run Windows Pro. The computer or device you connect from can run any Windows edition, including Home, or a different operating system. Windows Home being acceptable as a client does not make it an eligible host for the standard incoming Remote Desktop setup.
The Windows App documentation also lists Windows 11, Windows 10 version 1809 and later, and Windows Server 2019 or later in its remote-PC connection requirements. That list should not be read as overriding the host-edition requirement: a listed version alone does not establish that every edition can accept incoming connections. Do I need a Microsoft account?
For a direct remote-PC connection, you need credentials for an account that can sign in to the remote PC, but Microsoft says you can use this Windows App workflow without signing in to Windows App. These are separate sign-ins: app authentication is not a substitute for permission and credentials on the host.

How to prepare the host and connect
- Check the host edition. Confirm that the remote PC meets Microsoft’s Windows Pro host requirement for ordinary incoming Remote Desktop.
- Enable Remote Desktop on the host. The person responsible for the PC must turn on Remote Desktop in Windows settings and note the PC name.
- Confirm account access. Make sure you have credentials for a user account allowed to access that PC.
- Check network reachability. The client must be able to reach the host; workplace controls may require additional steps from an administrator.
- Add the PC in Windows App and sign in to the host. Use the host’s PC name, then enter the remote-PC account credentials when prompted. Microsoft’s setup article covers the Windows host setup process.
What Windows 10 support means
Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That date does not mean a Windows 10 PC stops functioning, but it does affect support and security status. Windows App’s documentation says Windows 10 versions outside mainstream support need enrollment in Extended Security Updates (ESU). Check the current Windows App requirements and the PC’s ESU status rather than treating every Windows 10 installation as equally supported.

Why a connection may not work
- The remote PC runs Windows Home: A Windows Home client can connect, but Microsoft’s standard host setup requires Windows Pro.
- Remote Desktop is off or the PC name is wrong: The host owner must enable Remote Desktop and provide the correct PC name.
- Your account lacks access: Windows App sign-in is not required for a direct connection, but valid host credentials and permission are.
- The network cannot reach the host: Being on a supported client platform does not ensure the remote PC is reachable; workplace access policies can also intervene.
- You are trying to open an assigned service instead: Cloud desktops and hosted organizational resources have separate assignment and sign-in rules. In particular, Microsoft’s Windows App documentation says Windows App on Windows does not yet support Remote Desktop Services; this is distinct from connecting directly to a remote PC.
