Windows App remote-PC problems usually come from one of five places: the account or assigned resource, the app or client internet connection, the remote PC’s readiness and permissions, network reachability, or display settings. Work through those layers in order. A sign-in failure, an empty resource list, and a PC that cannot be reached are different problems—and they need different fixes.
First identify where the connection stops
“Sign-in problem” can describe three different checkpoints. Note which one applies before changing settings:

- You cannot sign in to Windows App: this is an account-authentication issue. Windows App does not manage your account; Microsoft says, “Windows App uses your existing account; it doesn’t manage accounts.” Follow your organization’s process for password changes or account recovery. Microsoft’s Windows App troubleshooting guide explains the distinction.
- You sign in, but no resources appear: for an organization-provided desktop or app, the administrator may not have configured or assigned resources to your account. The app cannot create that assignment; ask the administrator to check it.
- You reach the remote PC’s Windows sign-in screen, but your credentials are rejected: the account may not be authorized on the host. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop FAQ identifies membership in the Remote Desktop Users group or an administrator group as a possible requirement. Ask the PC or organization administrator to verify your access rather than resetting Windows App.
A direct connection to an individual PC is not the same setup as Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, or Microsoft Dev Box. Organization-managed services may require a work or school account and an administrator-assigned resource. Follow the connection instructions for the service you were given.

- Confirm the client is online. Open a web page or another internet service on the device running Windows App. If that also fails, troubleshoot the client’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection before investigating the remote PC.
- Update Windows App. Install available updates, then close and reopen the app and retry.
- Try the browser connection as a diagnostic. Microsoft recommends testing Windows App in a web browser. If the browser works but the installed app does not, that narrows the problem toward the installed client or its configuration; it does not establish a particular cause.
- For a wired client, check the physical link. Reseat the Ethernet cable, try another port or cable if available, and compare with another device. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide suggests a USB-to-Ethernet adapter as an option when a PC has no Ethernet port. Adapter compatibility varies by device and operating system; it is only a way to test connectivity, not a fix for account, host-permission, or display problems.
On Windows 11, use the network diagnostics in Get Help if the client has no internet access. Treat Network reset as a late step: it removes and reinstalls network adapters, and you may need to set up VPN clients or virtual switches again. If you connect to Windows 365 or Dev Box, use the relevant service-specific inspection or repair actions; Azure Virtual Desktop users can check connection round-trip-time information. For recurring failures or poor performance in an organization-managed environment, contact the administrator.

When the remote PC is not showing up or will not connect
These checks apply to a direct connection to an individual Windows PC. A cloud desktop or assigned work resource can have different host and network arrangements.
Confirm the host can accept Remote Desktop connections
- Check the Windows edition. Microsoft’s public setup page describes Windows Pro as the host requirement for its Windows 10/11 examples. Its broader Remote Desktop documentation lists Pro, Enterprise, Education, and Windows Server as possible host editions; Windows Home cannot host incoming Remote Desktop connections. The device you connect from may run Windows Home or another operating system.
- Make sure the PC is on and awake. It must be powered on, connected to a network, and not asleep or hibernating.
- Confirm Remote Desktop is enabled. On the host, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and check the setting. The host’s configuration and the account’s authorization may require administrator access.
- Verify the account is permitted. If the host’s Windows sign-in screen appears but rejects the user, ask an administrator to check Remote Desktop Users or administrator-group membership.
- Check firewall and network policy. The host firewall and any organization network controls must allow the connection. Do not disable security features as a routine fix.

Check the name, address, and route to the PC
- If Windows App cannot find a PC by name, check the spelling and try the host’s IP address. A name may fail to resolve because of DNS or the local network configuration.
- If you are away from the PC’s local network, use the VPN or other access method configured by you or your organization. Do not expose a Remote Desktop port to the public internet as a casual troubleshooting step.
- If ordinary internet access works but the PC remains unreachable, investigate the host’s power and network connection, its Remote Desktop setting, the name or IP address, permissions, VPN access, and firewall policy.
If an organization-managed account, firewall, or access error appears, send the administrator the exact error message and say whether the browser-based connection attempt succeeded. That helps distinguish an app-specific failure from a resource assignment or network-policy issue.
Windows App display issues in a remote session
If you are connected but the remote desktop looks cropped, blank, or the wrong size, check the display options for that saved PC connection. In Windows App, open the saved PC’s settings and review the available display mode and options for your platform and app version. Microsoft’s Windows App connection instructions describe optional display and local-resource settings. They do not establish one display mode as the solution for every resolution or rendering problem.

Change one available option at a time and reconnect so you can tell whether it affects the symptom. These settings apply to the remote session; they do not control projecting your local screen to a separate wireless display.

Miracast troubleshooting is relevant when you are trying to project a local device to a wireless monitor or dock—not when Windows App cannot connect to a remote PC. Microsoft’s wireless display troubleshooting guide recommends checking that both devices support Miracast, Wi-Fi is enabled, and discovery is enabled on the target. On a target PC where applicable, check that the Wireless Display app is installed. Update relevant drivers and firmware, then restart the devices or remove and reconnect the display. A Miracast adapter is relevant only when the display lacks Miracast support and wireless projection is the goal.
