A Windows-related age prompt does not mean every Windows user must verify their age. It may come from a Microsoft account, an age-restricted feature, a parental-consent check, a regional requirement, or an app requesting an age signal. Check which app or service is showing it and what it asks you to do before proceeding.
Why you may see an age prompt
Microsoft describes age checks in specific account, content, app, and regional situations—not as a universal Windows setup or license requirement. A prompt may appear when you try to access age-restricted content, when an account’s birthdate triggers a consent check, or when an app uses Windows age signals.

Microsoft says age assurance can help meet local requirements and provide age-appropriate experiences. Its regional availability statements are specific and dated: a September 8, 2026 Windows Experience Blog post describes verification in Microsoft storefronts in Singapore, Brazil, and Australia, while Microsoft’s support page also lists the United Kingdom for proactive verification. Availability and methods can vary by region.

Start with the exact app or page name and the wording on screen. A prompt in Microsoft Store, Xbox, Teams personal, account sign-in, or another app may have a different trigger. Windows apps can also request age-group signals without asking for a precise birthdate.

- Birthdate correction: The account may have a birthdate that needs correcting.
- Parental consent: Microsoft says a birthdate indicating an underage user can trigger a consent request, even if the user believes they are above the local statutory age.
- Age verification or assurance: The account or service may require an age check for a particular feature or age-restricted content.
- App age signal: An app may request an age group and verification status through Windows age APIs.
These are different flows. Use the app or service name, the requested action, and your account’s country or region to understand which one applies.
Do Windows apps get your exact birthdate?
Microsoft’s Windows Age APIs documentation says the APIs provide privacy-preserving signals about a signed-in user’s age group and age-verification status. Microsoft says these signals do not directly expose an exact age or date of birth, and app access depends on consent and platform conditions. An app using those signals is not necessarily asking Windows to disclose your full birthdate.

What happens if you skip verification?
Microsoft says an unverified account may lose access to some content or features. Its age-verification FAQ gives a specific example: adults who decline age assurance cannot view or make new purchases or downloads of games and apps rated 18+. Mature-rated games or content already tied to the account remain accessible and playable. This does not establish that Windows itself will stop working.

Microsoft’s privacy statement says information may include a birthdate, account settings, usage information, or signals from partners and verification services. Review the notice attached to the specific flow rather than assuming every method collects the same information.

- Check the source: Note the app or service name and whether the prompt appeared during sign-in, in Store or Xbox, in Teams personal, or elsewhere.
- Read the request closely: Determine whether it asks to correct a birthdate, obtain parental consent, or complete age verification.
- Check account and region details: If the request appears to be from Microsoft, consider whether the account birthdate or country/region could explain it. Regional options differ.
- Decide whether to continue: If you proceed, follow the instructions in Microsoft’s sign-in or verification flow and review its privacy notice. Microsoft says you can try another method if one does not work and check age-assurance status on your Microsoft account.
Microsoft says a completed verification applies to both the Microsoft account and Xbox account. For current options and instructions, see its age verification support page.
