What Windows is adding to Copilot+ PCs and why it matters
Copilot+ PCs are designed around dedicated AI compute (an NPU). That’s what makes certain capabilities fast enough to feel “always available,” such as on-device capture and analysis, smarter captioning, and select creative tools that can run locally instead of being purely cloud-dependent.

Check prerequisites before you expect new AI features
If a Copilot+ feature isn’t showing, it’s almost always one of three things: you’re not actually on a Copilot+ device, your Windows build isn’t updated enough, or the feature’s required permissions aren’t enabled.
Confirm you actually have a Copilot+ PC
Start with a simple verification:
- Open Settings → System → About.
- Look for a line that indicates Copilot+ PC (or a similar certification badge).
- If you don’t see it, verify the device model’s certification from the manufacturer or Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC listing.
Some AI-capable laptops can run Windows AI features but aren’t Copilot+-certified, and that affects which experiences appear.
Verify your Windows version and update status
New AI features tend to ship with specific Windows 11 releases and cumulative updates. To check what you’re running:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Note the OS build number and the Last updated date.
- Click Check for updates.
If you’re on an older build, features can be delayed even when your device is Copilot+ certified.
Make sure the NPU is available
When the feature depends on an NPU, Windows needs to recognize it properly. You can check quickly via Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button → Device Manager.
- Look under System devices, Neural processing (if present), or similar categories.
- If you see errors (yellow triangles) or no AI/NPU-related device entries, consider updating drivers from the PC manufacturer.
Also confirm power modes aren’t forcing deep restrictions. Go to Settings → System → Power & battery and choose a balanced/performance-friendly plan.
How to update Windows to get new AI features
Feature availability is tied to updates. Use a clean update path first; then, if you’re still missing features, consider Insider builds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows Update (fastest path)
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any pending cumulative updates and restart when prompted.
- After reboot, return to Windows Update and confirm you’re on the latest available build.
For Copilot+ AI features, staying current matters more than installing only “major” releases.
Windows Insider Program (if features aren’t showing yet)
If you’re eager to access newer AI changes, Windows Insider can put you ahead of the public ring. The tradeoff is that Insider builds may include bugs.
- Go to Settings → Windows Update → Windows Insider Program.
- Choose a release channel (commonly the Beta or Release Preview ring, depending on what’s available).
- Confirm your choice and complete any restart steps.
- Install subsequent updates from Windows Update.
If a new AI feature still doesn’t appear on Insider, it may be staged by device eligibility, region/language, or server-side rollout.

How to enable key Copilot+ AI features in Settings
Once you’re updated, enabling the features depends on the specific capability. Some are on by default; others require an explicit opt-in—especially those that involve capturing or processing your on-device activity.
Copilot entry points (taskbar, start, and search)
To confirm Copilot integration is working:
- Click the Copilot icon on the taskbar (if present).
- Or press Win and type Copilot, then open it.
- If you don’t see Copilot, check Settings → Privacy & security and search for any Copilot-related privacy controls.
Copilot availability can also depend on language/region settings.
Recall controls (on-device, privacy-first)
Recall is one of the most privacy-sensitive Copilot+ features. You’ll typically see it only when your device and OS build support it, and it’s usually gated behind clear opt-in prompts.
- Open Settings → Privacy & security.
- Find the Recall or related on-device activity capture entry.
- Review the toggles for turning the feature on or off.
- Set exclusions for sensitive apps and data if the UI offers those controls.
- Restart if the feature requests it.
Gotcha: If you don’t grant required permissions or you exclude too much, Recall may appear “enabled” but yield limited results.
Live Captions and language support
Live Captions and related speech-to-text features are often tied to audio processing and language availability.
- Open Settings → Accessibility.
- Find Live captions or Captions.
- Turn the feature on and select supported languages if prompted.
If Live Captions don’t start, check whether the feature is disabled by accessibility policies (work/school devices can restrict it).
Image and creative features (examples: Cocreator)
Creative tools like Cocreator (or comparable image-generation/creation experiences) usually require an authenticated account and enough disk space for temporary assets.
- Open the feature from its app entry (often from Paint, Photos, or a Copilot-integrated flow).
- Sign in with your Microsoft account when prompted.
- Follow the on-screen safety and content prompts to enable the experience.
If it fails, try signing out and back in, then verify Windows updates and time settings (incorrect system time can break service auth).
Performance features that depend on NPU/GPU
Some Copilot+ experiences are about rendering quality or responsiveness rather than obvious “AI” buttons. If you notice no difference, check that you’re not running on a limited power plan.

Where the settings and permissions live
Copilot+ AI features typically draw from privacy permissions, diagnostics toggles, and app access permissions. If you’re troubleshooting, these are the areas to check first.
Privacy and data controls
Start with:
- Settings → Privacy & security
- Settings → Privacy & security → Activity history (if present)
- Settings → Privacy & security → Speech, Microphone, and Camera (only if relevant to the feature)
Gotcha: Turning off broad privacy options can indirectly disable AI features that rely on system signals.
Storage and “enough disk space” issues
On-device features can consume storage for indexes, caches, or local models. If your drive is nearly full, features may fail silently or show errors.
- Open Settings → System → Storage.
- Ensure you have free space (aim for multiple gigabytes, not just a few hundred MB).
- Run Storage Sense if it’s enabled and you’re low on space.
Account requirements (Microsoft account vs local)
Some Copilot+ experiences require sign-in. If you’re using a local account, you might see partial functionality.
- Open Settings → Accounts.
- Check whether you’re signed in with a Microsoft account.
- If not, sign in using your Microsoft credentials, then reboot.
Troubleshooting: AI features missing, broken, or disabled
If the main method fails, use a structured rollback: verify eligibility → verify OS build → verify permissions → verify drivers → verify service connectivity.
Feature doesn’t appear after updating
Try this checklist:
- Confirm Settings → System → About still indicates Copilot+ PC.
- Verify you installed the latest cumulative update and restarted.
- Check language/region: go to Settings → Time & language and set supported options.
- Look for group policy restrictions if it’s a work/school device (this can hide or disable features).
Some rollouts are staged server-side; even a perfect setup may take a few days to show the feature.
Recall won’t start or keeps prompting
- Open Settings → Privacy & security and re-check Recall toggles.
- Make sure excluded apps aren’t blocking the apps you’re testing with.
- Confirm you have sufficient free storage on the system drive.
- Restart the PC after changing Recall settings.
- If you have security software, check whether it interferes with on-device capture workflows.
If Recall errors persist, check Settings → Windows Update for the most recent cumulative update and firmware updates from the manufacturer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Copilot says something went wrong
- Confirm the PC’s date and time are correct: Settings → Time & language.
- Check your internet connection and proxy/VPN settings.
- Sign out and sign back into your Microsoft account.
- Reboot, then try Copilot again.
If you’re on a managed device, your organization may restrict Copilot features.
Audio/Caption features don’t work
- Go to Settings → Accessibility and ensure Live captions are enabled.
- Verify microphone permissions: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
- Test the microphone input in Sound settings.
- Update audio drivers via the PC manufacturer.
Gotcha: If the microphone is blocked at OS or app level, captions will fail even though the toggle is on.
Performance features don’t engage
- Switch to a higher performance power plan.
- Update your GPU drivers and restart.
- Check whether a feature is disabled by developer/diagnostics settings.
- Try the feature after closing background GPU-intensive apps.
Some performance features can be sensitive to thermals and will throttle under heavy load.

Common mistakes that prevent Copilot+ AI features from working
- Ignoring OS build gaps: updating Windows partially (or skipping a restart) can delay feature activation.
- Low storage: on-device tools need free space for caches and indexes.
- Over-restricting privacy: disabling speech, activity history, or capture permissions can break dependent features.
- Relying on generic drivers: some NPU/GPU behaviors improve only with current vendor drivers.
- Testing on unsupported languages/regions: captions and assistant experiences can vary by locale.
Alternatives if you don’t have a Copilot+ PC
If your device isn’t Copilot+-certified, you can still use Copilot, but you may not get the on-device NPU experiences that require that specific hardware profile.
Try Microsoft Copilot in supported ways
Use Copilot in the browser or the app entry that’s available for your Windows build. You’ll typically see assistant-based help even when on-device features like Recall aren’t present.
Use app-based AI tools instead of NPU features
Some AI capabilities can be handled by third-party apps or browser-based tools. For example, creative workflows often exist inside common editors, while speech tools may be offered via standalone accessibility utilities.
Bottom Line: get the features you paid for, and keep control of your data
Windows’ newer AI experiences for Copilot+ PCs are real—and they’re also gated. The fastest route to getting them is verifying Copilot+ eligibility, updating to the latest Windows 11 build, and explicitly configuring the privacy-sensitive toggles that features like Recall depend on.
If something still doesn’t appear, work backward from prerequisites: hardware recognition (NPU), permissions, storage, and any organization policy restrictions. Most “missing feature” cases are fixable without reinstalling Windows.

Do new Copilot+ AI features require a specific Windows 11 version?
Yes. Many features are tied to specific cumulative updates and release builds. Check Settings → Windows Update for your installed OS build and update status.
Why can I see Copilot but not Recall or other Copilot+ features?
Copilot availability can be broader than on-device Copilot+ features. Recall and similar capabilities often require a supported hardware profile, eligible OS build, and explicit opt-in/privacy settings.
Is Recall processed on-device?
Recall is designed as an on-device capability for Copilot+ PCs. You still control privacy settings and exclusions in Settings, and you can turn the feature off.
Will Windows Insider fix missing features faster?
Often it helps because Insider builds receive changes earlier. But rollouts can also be staged server-side and may depend on device eligibility, region, and language.

Use the privacy controls for relevant features (like disabling or excluding items for Recall, and turning off speech/capture permissions if applicable). You can still use Copilot-based assistance without enabling on-device capture features.
Final Thoughts
Windows is using Copilot+ PCs to bring AI features closer to the moment you need them—especially when your device has the right NPU and you’re on a recent Windows build. The upside is faster, more responsive experiences; the tradeoff is that some features are intentionally staged and gated behind eligibility, updates, and privacy prompts.
If you want the smoothest rollout, don’t just update Windows once—keep your build current, confirm your Copilot+ hardware, and review the relevant privacy and accessibility toggles. Do that, and most “where did the feature go?” problems turn into quick fixes instead of a long wait.
