Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Network 2” in Windows 7 usually means Windows created a second stored network-location profile—not that a second router, Internet connection, or intruder is active. This can happen after replacing a router, reinstalling an adapter, changing hardware, restoring a system image, or losing the identity of a familiar network. If browsing works, the label is often cosmetic. Rename the active location or remove unused locations through Network and Sharing Center before attempting registry edits.
First, identify where “Network 2” appears
Windows 7 uses several different names for different networking objects. The correct fix depends on where you see the number.

| Where you see it | What it usually represents | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Network and Sharing Center, under “View your active networks” | A Windows network-location profile | Rename it, or merge/delete obsolete locations |
| Wireless network list or saved wireless profiles | A Wi-Fi SSID/profile, including saved security settings | Remove the unwanted Wi-Fi profile |
| Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → Change adapter settings | A physical or virtual network adapter | Identify legitimate adapters before disabling anything |
| Two active networks, or an “Unidentified network” | Multiple interfaces or a genuine detection problem | Check Ethernet, Wi-Fi, VPN, and virtual adapters |
A physical network is the router, access point, and connected devices. An SSID is the Wi-Fi broadcast name, such as HomeWiFi. A network-location profile is Windows’ stored identity and settings for that connection. A network adapter is the hardware or virtual interface that connects the computer. These are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Why Windows creates a numbered network profile
Windows decides whether a connection is the same network by examining its network identity and interface information. If that identity changes, Windows may create another profile and assign the next available display name. Common triggers include:

- Replacing a router while keeping the same SSID.
- Removing, reinstalling, replacing, or updating an Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter.
- Connecting through a different interface or physical port.
- Restoring or cloning a Windows installation.
- Installing VPN, virtual-machine, Internet Connection Sharing, Bluetooth, or USB networking software.
- Corruption or stale data in Windows’ Network List Manager database.
Microsoft’s Windows 7 support discussion documents numbered profiles after networking-equipment changes and describes the built-in merge and delete controls: Microsoft Q&A instructions. The number alone does not establish that a second network is operating.
Safest fix: rename the active network
Renaming changes the Windows display name only. It does not change the router’s SSID, Wi-Fi password, IP address, or Internet service.
- Open Control Panel.
- Open Network and Sharing Center.
- Under View your active networks, click the network icon or current network name.
- In Set Network Properties, enter the name you want.
- Confirm the change and close the dialogs.
The exact wording can vary by Windows 7 edition, language, and installed networking software. If only the label bothers you and connectivity is normal, renaming—or simply leaving it alone—is the lowest-risk option.

- Open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center.
- Click the active network icon or name under View your active networks.
- Select Merge or Delete Network Locations.
- Review the stored locations and remove entries you can clearly identify as obsolete.
- Keep the location currently in use unless Windows identifies it as unused or you are prepared to reconnect and recheck sharing settings.
- Disconnect and reconnect the adapter, or restart Windows, if the old display does not refresh.
Deleting a location can remove its remembered network classification and associated discovery, firewall, file-sharing, HomeGroup, or printer behavior. Record the current location name and type before deleting anything. Windows may create a new numbered profile again if it detects a genuinely different network identity.
If the duplicate name is actually a saved Wi-Fi profile
A Wi-Fi list entry such as HomeWiFi 2 is not the same object as “Network 2” under active networks. To inspect saved wireless profiles, open an elevated Command Prompt (right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator) and enter:
netsh wlan show profiles
To remove one saved profile, use its exact name:
netsh wlan delete profile name="PROFILE NAME"
Microsoft documents these commands in the netsh wlan reference. Deleting a Wi-Fi profile removes its saved wireless settings and password, so you may need to select the network again and enter the security key. This command does not directly delete a Windows network-location entry.

“Local Area Connection 2” is an adapter name; it is not automatically the same issue as a network-location label of “Network 2.”
When Internet access or sharing is actually broken
Treat the number as a clue, not a diagnosis. First test whether another device can use the same router, then note the exact Windows status: red X, yellow warning triangle, “Unidentified network,” or “No Internet access.”
- Confirm the intended adapter is enabled and connected.
- Restart the router and computer.
- Check the adapter’s IPv4 properties. Use automatic DHCP unless you intentionally use static addressing.
- Run Windows 7’s built-in network troubleshooting tool.
- Install the correct network-adapter driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer if the problem began after hardware or driver changes.
- Only after recording custom settings, consider command-line resets.
These commands address different parts of networking and are not a guaranteed cure for a cosmetic label:

Registry cleanup: an advanced last resort
Windows stores network profiles beneath:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionNetworkListProfiles
Microsoft identifies this location in its network-profile documentation: Network profile detection details. A Microsoft support discussion also describes deleting a stale profile key as a workaround, while warning that registry editing is risky: support discussion.
Do not delete the entire Profiles key. If you can identify the stale subkey and still need this method:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Create a restore point.
- Export the
NetworkListkey as a backup. - Record the active profile and its network-location settings.
- Delete only the clearly obsolete subkey.
- Reconnect or restart and expect Windows to recreate a profile if necessary.
Registry deletion can remove location-related configuration and is unnecessary merely because a visible name ends in “2.”

What the label does—and does not—prove
- It usually does not mean someone hacked the computer.
- It does not prove that two routers or Internet connections are active.
- It may still affect firewall classification, discovery, shared folders, HomeGroup, or printer behavior.
- Unknown adapters, unexplained VPNs, persistent unidentified networks, or unexpected sharing deserve separate investigation.
Practical decision checklist
- Internet works and only the name is wrong: rename the active location or leave it alone.
- Old locations are listed: remove clearly unused entries with Merge or Delete Network Locations.
- The SSID itself has a suffix: inspect and remove the incorrect saved Wi-Fi profile with
netsh wlan. - Two active networks appear: identify physical, VPN, virtual, Bluetooth, and USB adapters before disabling anything.
- Connectivity is failing: troubleshoot adapter state, DHCP, drivers, router access, and TCP/IP separately.
- The GUI cannot clear a stale entry: back up first and reserve registry editing for an identified profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will renaming “Network 2” change my Wi-Fi name or password?
No. It changes only Windows’ network-location display name; the router SSID, security key, and Internet account remain unchanged.
Why did the number return after I deleted the profile?
Windows assigns a new profile when the current connection still looks like a distinct network identity, such as after hardware, driver, router, VPN, or virtual-adapter changes.
Should I delete every network profile listed?
No. Remove only entries you can identify as obsolete. Deleting profiles can remove remembered location, firewall, discovery, and sharing settings.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can “Network 2” itself cause slow or failed Internet access?
Usually the label is cosmetic. If access fails, investigate the adapter, DHCP, driver, router, and TCP/IP status rather than assuming the number is the cause.
Do I need to reinstall Windows to remove it?
No. Windows 7 provides rename and merge/delete controls, and saved Wi-Fi profiles can be managed with `netsh wlan`.
The Bottom Line
In Windows 7, “Network 2” normally identifies a second stored network-location profile, not a second physical network. Rename it or remove obsolete locations through Network and Sharing Center first; investigate Wi-Fi profiles, adapters, and connectivity separately, and use registry editing only with a backup and a clearly identified stale profile.
