Windows 365 Cloud PC Interview Questions: 54 Key Answers for Administrators

A practical set of 54 Windows 365 Cloud PC interview answers covering Enterprise provisioning, identity and network choices, security defaults, costs, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strong Windows 365 interview answers connect the service’s design to real operating decisions: who gets a Cloud PC, how it is provisioned, which network and join model fits, and what an administrator must check when something fails. The 54 answers below focus on current terminology and distinguish established service behavior from choices that depend on an organization’s edition, configuration, or workload.

Windows 365 fundamentals

1. What is Windows 365 Cloud PC?

Windows 365 is Microsoft’s software-as-a-service Cloud PC offering. It automatically creates a hosted Windows virtual machine for a licensed user; the user connects through the Windows 365 portal, a browser, or a supported client app. Unlike a physical PC, the Cloud PC is hosted in the cloud and managed through the service and its configured management tools.

2. What is a Cloud PC used for?

It gives a user access to a Windows desktop hosted in the cloud from supported device types. In an interview, describe the service as a way to provide a managed desktop experience without requiring the user’s access device to be the computer that hosts Windows.

3. Does a user need a particular physical device to connect?

No single device type is required by the service description: users can connect through the portal, a browser, or supported client apps. Windows 365 Link is an optional purpose-built endpoint available in select markets, not a prerequisite for using or administering Cloud PCs.

4. How are Cloud PCs assigned to people?

Windows 365 Business, Enterprise, and Government generally provide a personal, one-to-one Cloud PC relationship. Windows 365 Flex is intended for non-concurrent shared access, so do not describe every Windows 365 offering as a permanently assigned one-user-to-one-PC arrangement.

5. What is Windows 365 Flex?

Flex is the current name for the offering previously called Windows 365 Frontline. Some Intune admin-center labels may still use “Frontline” during the rename; use “Flex” in current prose and recognize the older label if it appears in an interface.

6. How is Windows 365 different from a traditional VDI deployment?

Windows 365 is a managed cloud desktop service in which Microsoft hosts the Cloud PC and the customer configures users, licensing, policies, and related controls. A traditional virtual desktop infrastructure deployment can place more infrastructure design and operation under the organization’s control. Explain the actual division of responsibility in the proposed architecture rather than treating the terms as interchangeable.

Choosing a deployment approach

7. What is the difference between Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop?

Windows 365 is oriented around managed Cloud PCs and per-user monthly licensing for human use. Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) offers more infrastructure and architecture flexibility and is commonly associated with consumption-based pricing. These are high-level distinctions, not a universal cost comparison: workload, utilization, licensing, networking, storage, and architecture affect the result.

8. When might an organization choose AVD instead?

AVD may be a better fit when the organization needs the additional infrastructure control or customization associated with that service, or needs a multi-session design. The decision should reflect the organization’s operational capability and workload requirements, not a blanket claim that one service is always cheaper or more capable.

9. What should guide the choice between a managed Cloud PC and a more configurable desktop platform?

Ask how much infrastructure the organization wants to operate, whether it needs multi-session access, what customization is required, and whether its team can support the chosen architecture. Match the service to those requirements before comparing estimated costs.

10. What deployment approach does Microsoft recommend as a starting point?

Microsoft’s current deployment guidance recommends starting with cloud-native choices and documenting exceptions where actual technical, security, regulatory, business, or operational dependencies require a different design. Treat that as a starting point for evaluation, not a rule that eliminates valid exceptions.

11. What are the main network choices for Windows 365 Enterprise?

The two choices covered here are Microsoft Hosted Network and Azure Network Connection (ANC). Hosted networking reduces the customer’s responsibility for underlying network setup; ANC connects Cloud PCs through the organization’s Azure virtual network and related infrastructure.

Choice Useful when Key consideration
Microsoft Hosted Network The organization wants less responsibility for the underlying network setup. Cloud PC VPN, proxy, and secure web gateway settings still need to permit required service and RDP connectivity.
Azure Network Connection The Cloud PCs need to use the organization’s Azure virtual network and related infrastructure. Validate network capacity, region alignment, endpoints, DNS, domain-controller reachability when needed, and network controls.

12. How should an organization choose between those network options?

Choose based on actual connectivity, network-control, and domain dependencies. Hosted networking reduces responsibility for the underlying setup, while ANC uses the organization’s Azure network; ANC therefore calls for checks of its available IP capacity, region alignment, routing, DNS, and access to required services.

Licensing and administration

13. What does a Windows 365 Enterprise deployment involve?

Administrators configure an Intune provisioning policy, select a network and Windows image, optionally configure settings, and assign the policy to Microsoft Entra user groups. Eligible users need the applicable licenses; Windows 365 then provisions matching users automatically.

14. What licenses does Microsoft list for Windows 365 Enterprise users?

Microsoft’s requirements page lists Windows 365, Windows E3, Intune, and Microsoft Entra ID P1 for Windows 365 Enterprise users. Requirements differ by offering and deployment configuration, so state the edition and join/network model when answering and verify the current requirements for that design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

15. What administrative roles are required for provisioning?

The listed roles for provisioning are Intune Administrator or Windows 365 Administrator. Intune is also used to manage Cloud PCs. An interview answer should distinguish the role needed for a specific administrative task from the licenses required for users.

16. Is the same licensing answer valid for every Windows 365 offering?

No. Microsoft’s requirements vary by offering and deployment configuration. Avoid presenting the Enterprise requirements as universal; identify the edition and configuration first, then check the requirements that apply to it.

17. How is Windows 365 billed for human users?

Windows 365 uses per-user, per-month licensing for human use, with fixed monthly billing described in Microsoft’s overview. Additional network charges may apply depending on deployment. Do not quote a price without checking current regional pricing and the specific configuration.

Provisioning and images

18. What determines whether a user receives a Cloud PC?

Provisioning depends on eligibility, the user’s license, and assignment to the applicable Entra group and policy. The policy defines the network and image, along with any optional settings, so troubleshoot both the user’s assignment and the policy configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

19. What does a Windows 365 provisioning policy define?

For the Enterprise deployment described here, it selects the network and Windows image, can include optional settings, and targets Entra user groups. Those choices determine how eligible assigned users’ Cloud PCs are created.

20. Does assigning a policy manually create each Cloud PC?

No. The process is policy- and group-driven: administrators assign the policy and Windows 365 checks licensing and provisions matching users automatically. Microsoft’s overview summarizes this with: “Admins don’t manually create Cloud PCs.”

21. What happens if an administrator changes a provisioning policy?

A policy change does not retroactively reconfigure Cloud PCs that already exist. If an existing Cloud PC needs a changed configuration, understand the available management path and its effect before taking action rather than assuming that editing the policy updates the machine in place.

22. What is the difference between provisioning and reprovisioning?

Provisioning creates a Cloud PC for an eligible user according to the assigned policy. Reprovisioning deletes the existing Cloud PC and creates it again; it is not simply an in-place policy refresh.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

23. What data is lost during reprovisioning?

Reprovisioning removes the Cloud PC’s existing user data, applications, and customizations when the old Cloud PC is deleted. Treat it as a destructive lifecycle action and plan for user data before proceeding.

24. How many automatic provisioning retries occur after a failure?

Windows 365 retries a failed provisioning operation automatically twice before marking the Cloud PC as failed. Once the cause is resolved, an administrator can retry it.

25. What should an administrator do before retrying a failed provisioning operation?

Identify and correct the cause first, then retry. A retry without correcting the underlying issue may simply reproduce the failure; inspect the provisioning status and validate the relevant policy and network dependencies.

26. Should an organization use a gallery image or a custom image?

Microsoft’s guidance positions a gallery image as the default cloud-native choice and a custom image as an alternative when there is a documented need. A custom image also gives the organization image-maintenance responsibility; avoid assuming particular included applications or update guarantees without checking current image documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identity and connectivity

27. Should a new deployment use Microsoft Entra join or hybrid join?

Microsoft recommends Microsoft Entra join as the cloud-native starting point for most new deployments. Hybrid join remains a valid option where domain or application dependencies require it; it adds dependencies that must be designed and tested.

28. What dependencies should be checked for hybrid join?

Check Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) DNS resolution, reachability to a domain controller, a synchronized identity, and appropriate domain-join permissions. These are reasons to choose hybrid join when needed, not proof that every Cloud PC requires it.

29. What does ANC require from the Azure network?

Validate available virtual network and subnet IP capacity, region alignment, required endpoints, and the DNS and domain-controller paths needed by the selected join model. Review network controls as well, since they can block service connectivity or provisioning.

30. Does Microsoft Hosted Network remove all customer network work?

No. It reduces responsibility for underlying network setup, but VPN, proxy, and secure web gateway configuration on the Cloud PC still needs to permit required service and RDP connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

31. What network traffic should administrators account for?

Windows 365 uses RDP and needs internet connectivity. Required endpoints must be reachable from the relevant network paths; exact requirements depend on the deployment and workload. Include possible RDP egress charges in network planning.

32. Can a firewall, proxy, or TLS inspection interfere with Windows 365?

Yes. Firewalls, network security groups, proxies, secure web gateways, TLS inspection, and VPN routing must not block required traffic. Microsoft warns that traffic interception can interfere with network checks and provisioning, so ensure the Cloud PC network does not enforce interception that disrupts the service.

33. How is Teams audio and video traffic handled?

Teams audio and video traffic is offloaded to the user’s endpoint. Include the endpoint and network path in connectivity planning rather than assuming all media traffic follows the same route as the Cloud PC desktop session.

Security and data handling

34. What is a useful way to explain Windows 365 security?

Describe security across three layers: access, device, and data. Conditional Access is a key access control, while device protections vary by image and configuration. Administrators should identify which controls are defaults and which require separate configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

35. What role does Conditional Access play?

Microsoft identifies Conditional Access as a primary control for access to the Windows 365 service. Explain it as part of the identity and access layer, rather than implying that the service’s other device and data protections are unnecessary.

36. Are virtual TPM and Secure Boot enabled by default?

Microsoft says new Cloud PCs have virtual TPM and Secure Boot enabled by default. State the scope accurately: this is the documented default for new Cloud PCs, not a reason to assume every other security feature is automatically configured.

37. Are Hypervisor Code Integrity and Credential Guard always enabled?

No blanket claim is appropriate. Microsoft says Hypervisor Code Integrity and Microsoft Defender Credential Guard are enabled by default only on Cloud PCs running a Windows 11 gallery image. Other capabilities can require particular SKUs or configuration.

38. How should an administrator answer a question about Cloud PC encryption?

Separate what the interview question means by encryption—such as protection at rest, in transit, or within the guest operating system—then verify the current Microsoft documentation for the selected offering and configuration. The defaults described here establish virtual TPM and Secure Boot behavior, but do not by themselves establish every encryption setting or customer responsibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

39. Where should user data live if a Cloud PC may be reprovisioned?

Plan data placement and backup before reprovisioning, because local user data on the deleted Cloud PC is removed along with its apps and customizations. Do not treat the Cloud PC’s local state as preserved through that action.

Operations and troubleshooting

40. What is a sound first step when a user reports a Cloud PC issue?

Determine whether one user or a group is affected. That distinction helps separate a user-specific assignment or client problem from a wider service, policy, or network issue.

41. What should be checked before changing a user’s Cloud PC?

Check service health and the user’s client/device connectivity, then confirm the user’s license and group/policy assignment. Review the Cloud PC or provisioning status before choosing a corrective action.

42. How should an administrator investigate a provisioning failure?

Review the provisioning status and diagnostics, confirm that the user is licensed and assigned to the intended policy, and validate the policy’s image and network choices. Check network reachability and the required endpoints before retrying after the cause is corrected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

43. What connectivity checks matter most?

Validate the required endpoints and RDP path, then examine VPN routing, proxy and secure web gateway behavior, TLS inspection, and DNS. For hybrid join, pay particular attention to DNS and domain-controller reachability.

44. How should an administrator use diagnostics and retries?

Use Windows 365 and Intune diagnostics to investigate the reported state, and retry provisioning only after correcting the root cause. The exact resolution depends on the incident; this sequence is a practical starting point, not a guarantee that one flow covers every problem.

45. What if only one user cannot connect?

Start with that user’s license, group and policy assignment, Cloud PC status, client/device connectivity, and the user’s network path. If those checks show the same failure for multiple users, broaden the investigation to service health and shared network controls.

46. What if several users report the same connection failure?

Check service health and shared network paths, including required endpoints, RDP egress, VPN routing, proxy or secure web gateway behavior, and TLS inspection. Compare the affected users’ network and deployment context before treating the issue as an individual account problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

47. How should DNS be included in troubleshooting?

Check DNS as part of validating the Cloud PC’s network path, and prioritize it when hybrid join is involved because AD DS DNS resolution is one of that model’s dependencies. Do not infer that every Entra-joined deployment has the same domain DNS requirement.

48. What should an administrator do if a policy edit did not change an existing Cloud PC?

Recognize that provisioning policy changes do not retroactively reconfigure existing Cloud PCs. Determine the supported management action for the desired change and its impact on current state before proceeding; reprovisioning deletes and recreates the machine.

Planning and interview-ready answers

49. What factors influence Windows 365 cost?

For human use, licensing is per user per month. Total deployment cost can also depend on network charges, workload, licensing requirements, utilization, storage, and architecture. Compare actual designs rather than assuming Windows 365 or AVD is cheaper in every case.

50. Why should an administrator avoid quoting a universal Windows 365 price?

Microsoft’s overview describes fixed monthly per-user billing, but current prices vary by region and configuration, and additional network charges may apply. Give a price only after confirming current regional pricing and the specific service and deployment assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

51. How should disaster recovery for Cloud PCs be discussed in an interview?

Describe the recovery objective and the organization’s data-protection and continuity plan, then distinguish those plans from reprovisioning. Reprovisioning deletes the existing Cloud PC and its local data, apps, and customizations; it should not be presented as a data-preserving recovery method. Verify the recovery capabilities and responsibilities for the chosen deployment rather than assuming a specific recovery-point or recovery-time guarantee.

52. What should an administrator say about user profiles?

Clarify whether the question concerns profile persistence, user data placement, or the effect of a lifecycle action. The established behavior to call out is that reprovisioning removes the Cloud PC’s user data, applications, and customizations. Do not promise a separate profile-persistence behavior without confirming that it applies to the organization’s configuration.

53. What is the operational trade-off of using a custom image?

A custom image can be chosen when a documented need calls for one, but it adds image-maintenance responsibility. Gallery images are Microsoft’s cloud-native default in the guidance described here; check current image documentation before making claims about update cadence or preinstalled software.

54. What makes a strong answer to a Windows 365 design question?

Name the decision, connect it to a real dependency, and state the operational trade-off. For example, explain whether the need is cloud-native identity or an existing domain dependency, whether the network should be Microsoft-hosted or connected through ANC, and whether image customization is justified. Then state what must be validated for that specific edition and configuration.
