Windows 11 does put limits on some familiar tasks, but the answer depends on your build, region and edition. Taskbar placement was announced for Windows Insiders in 2026, some Windows features have been removed or narrowed, and app-install rules are especially strict in Home in S mode. Here are three cases—and how to tell a true restriction from a default or an in-progress rollout.
1. Moving or shrinking the taskbar depends on your Windows build
For years, Windows 11’s taskbar settings offered less freedom than many users expected: Microsoft’s support page documents changing taskbar alignment from centered to left, but says Start cannot be removed from the taskbar. That is different from moving the entire taskbar to another screen edge or making it shorter.

On May 15, 2026, Microsoft announced that taskbar placement at the top, bottom, left or right of the screen, along with an option for a smaller taskbar, was rolling out to the Experimental channel of the Windows Insider Program. The announcement establishes an Insider rollout, not availability on every retail Windows 11 PC. Check your Windows build and channel before assuming the feature is absent—or claiming it is generally available. Microsoft’s May 15, 2026 announcement describes the rollout, while its taskbar customization guide covers the documented settings.

2. Some Windows features are removed or work differently than before
“Windows won’t let me do that” can mean a feature was removed, rather than hidden behind a setting. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications page lists Math Input Panel as removed; Math Recognizer remains available as an optional feature. The same page says desktop wallpaper cannot be roamed to or from a device when you sign in with a Microsoft account. Those are specific limitations, not evidence that all Windows personalization or math input is unavailable.

When a familiar control disappears, first check whether Microsoft describes it as removed, optional or limited. That distinction matters: an optional component may still be installable, while a removed feature needs a different workflow. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and system requirements for the listed changes and limits.
3. Home in S mode limits app installation to the Microsoft Store
Windows 11 Home in S mode is designed around a narrower app-installation policy: apps must come from the Microsoft Store, and Edge and Bing remain the defaults. This is not the rule for every Windows 11 PC; it applies to the S-mode edition. Microsoft says switching out of S mode is permanent, so consider whether Store-only installation is acceptable before making that change.

Default browser controls vary by location
Microsoft described broader default-browser controls and Microsoft Store uninstall options for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) as part of changes related to the Digital Markets Act. Its June 2, 2025 announcement included a rollout schedule, but that historical schedule does not establish the current state of every device. Do not assume the EEA behavior applies worldwide; see Microsoft’s announcement on EEA-related Windows changes for the regional scope.

File Explorer’s context menu has an Insider update in progress
Microsoft announced File Explorer improvements for Insiders on August 17, 2026, including faster interactions, additional address-bar input support, more places where a middle-click opens a folder in a tab, and a customizable context menu. That is an Insider announcement, not confirmation that every Windows 11 installation has received the changes. Older complaints about Explorer’s context menu may therefore depend on the build and rollout channel. Details are in Microsoft’s August 17, 2026 Insider announcement.
