Windows 11’s Focused Lock Screen Makes Weather the Primary Widget

A Windows Insider preview makes Weather the primary lock-screen widget and reduces recommendations. Here’s how to reorder, remove, add, or hide widgets in Windows 11.

Microsoft is gradually rolling out a more focused lock-screen widget experience to Windows Insiders on newer builds: Weather becomes the primary widget, recommended content is reduced, and users gain more control over their selections. The preview notes do not say Weather is the only widget users can add, and they give no date for general availability.

What Microsoft is changing

In its Windows Insider Experimental Preview Build 26340.9233 release notes, published August 21, 2026 and updated September 2, 2026, Microsoft describes a gradual rollout to Insiders on newer builds. The notes say: “With this change, Weather will be the primary widget shown on the lock screen, reducing recommended widget content and making the experience feel more focused.”

That describes a Weather-first default and less recommended content—not a strict one-widget limit. The notes say experimental features may appear in future Windows releases when ready, but do not announce a general-release date.

How to manage lock-screen widgets now

You can adjust the lock-screen widgets in Windows 11 through Settings, whether or not the Insider change has reached your device.

  1. Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
  2. Review the Widgets list. Its order matches the reading order on the lock screen; drag a widget higher in the list to show it earlier.
  3. Open a widget’s more-options menu to remove it or customize it, if its provider supports customization.
  4. Select Add widget to browse the available catalog. Microsoft’s instructions say only small-size widgets can currently be added.
  5. Switch Widgets off to hide widgets from the lock screen altogether.

These controls apply to the lock screen. Microsoft notes that widgets also appear on the taskbar and Widgets board; turning them off for the lock screen does not describe a system-wide Widgets setting. See Microsoft’s lock-screen customization instructions for the documented options.

Choose between a curated lock screen and no widgets

  • Keep Weather prominent: Use the focused Insider experience when it is available on your build, or arrange the widget list so Weather appears earlier.
  • Keep a selection: Remove widgets you do not want, reorder the rest, and add eligible small widgets from the catalog.
  • Hide lock-screen widgets: Turn off Widgets in the Lock screen settings.

Availability of the Weather-first preview experience depends on the gradual Insider rollout. The release notes do not establish which builds or channels will receive it next, so check the setting on your own device rather than assuming it has reached every Windows 11 PC.

What lock-screen widgets may reveal about location

Microsoft describes lock-screen widgets as glanceable information; selecting one can open more details after you sign in. Content may use estimated location from Windows Location service when it is enabled, or from your internet connection’s IP address otherwise. Microsoft documents this behavior in its lock-screen support guidance.
