Windows 11’s Copilot Key Can Now Be Remapped to Right Ctrl or Context Menu

Microsoft’s Windows 11 preview update documents a setting to remap some Copilot keys to Right Ctrl or Context Menu. Availability varies by device and rollout.

If your Windows 11 keyboard has a dedicated Copilot key, a new setting can let you use it as Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key instead. Microsoft documented the option in its September 22, 2026 preview update, but availability depends on your device and update rollout. This changes the role of a physical key; it does not create a new universal keyboard shortcut.

Which key is changing?

The likely key behind this headline is the dedicated Copilot key, which began appearing on new Windows 11 hardware in 2024. On some devices it takes the place of Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key. The layout and behavior vary by manufacturer, firmware configuration, and hardware design, so not every Windows 11 keyboard has one or uses it the same way. Microsoft’s Copilot key guidance describes those differences.

The physical Copilot key is distinct from the Windows keyboard shortcut Windows key+C. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcut reference lists Windows key+C for Copilot or Microsoft 365 Copilot, depending on configuration. The Copilot key remapping option instead assigns a different function to the dedicated key itself.

What can the Copilot key do after remapping?

Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 preview update notes document two alternative roles: Right Ctrl and Context Menu. The update is identified as KB5124010, for Windows 11 OS builds 26300.9550, 26200.9550, and 26100.9550. These are preview-update details, not evidence that the setting is already available on every Windows 11 PC. See the September 22, 2026 update notes.

Remapped role Choose it if… Important detail
Right Ctrl You rely on a right-side Ctrl key for shortcuts or keyboard workflows. Microsoft warns that RCtrl+Win and RCtrl+Shift combinations will not work normally with this remapping. Use Left Ctrl for those combinations.
Context Menu You want the key to invoke the context-menu function, commonly used to open an item’s options. The documentation names this as an available role; the exact physical layout still depends on the device.

How to remap the Copilot key

  1. Install the applicable Windows 11 update when it is offered for your device. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 release note documents the feature in a preview update; rollout and device support may vary.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard.
  3. Look for the Copilot key setting, then choose Right Ctrl or Context Menu, if those options are present.
  4. If you choose Right Ctrl, test your usual shortcuts. For RCtrl+Win and RCtrl+Shift combinations, use Left Ctrl as Microsoft recommends.

If the setting is missing, first check whether the relevant Windows update has reached your PC, then consult your PC or keyboard manufacturer’s guidance. The support page describes the settings location when available, while the dated preview notes establish the feature’s appearance in that update; neither establishes that every Windows 11 device will expose it.

Should you change it?

  • Choose Right Ctrl if that key is missing from your layout or you prefer a right-side Ctrl for most of your work, and you can accommodate the documented chord limitation.
  • Choose Context Menu if that function is more useful to you than the Copilot key’s current behavior.
  • Keep the existing behavior if you use the Copilot key as configured and neither alternative improves your workflow.

There is no single best choice: the useful remapping depends on which key your device replaced and which functions you actually use. Microsoft also documents Windows key+U as the shortcut for Accessibility settings in its keyboard shortcut reference.
