Windows 11 would be more useful with a few optional, focused utilities built closer to the system: better clipboard reuse, a two-panel file workflow, local device transfers and a flexible media player. That does not mean every user needs another app. Windows already covers basic file management and media playback, and Microsoft’s free, open-source PowerToys suite already offers several useful extras. The case for these tools is that they fill specific gaps without requiring everyone to adopt a larger replacement for Windows’ built-in apps.
What makes an app worth building into Windows 11?
A built-in feature should solve a common task, work well with Windows, and remain optional when its interface or setup will not suit everyone. Open-source licensing is a benefit, but it does not by itself prove that a tool is right for every PC. The relevant questions are whether Windows already handles the task, what extra capability the app provides, and whether it adds a dependency or a different workflow.

That distinction matters: some suggestions below complement existing Windows features, while others offer an alternative workflow. None needs to be treated as a universal default.

Which tools improve common Windows workflows?
Microsoft PowerToys: system utilities you can choose individually
Microsoft already publishes PowerToys as a free, open-source suite of Windows utilities. Its documented tools include Always On Top for keeping a window above others, Awake for preventing a PC from sleeping, Color Picker, Text Extractor, and Workspaces for launching a set of apps into a workflow. Rather than adding one large feature that everyone must use, PowerToys lets people enable utilities that match their needs. Its available modules can change over time.

Ditto: find and reuse clipboard history
Windows’ basic clipboard workflow handles the current copied item; Ditto is aimed at people who repeatedly need older clips. It can store clipboard history, search clips, and back up or restore its database. That is useful for recurring snippets, addresses, or other copied material. It is not a necessary replacement for ordinary copy and paste, and users should consider what they place on any clipboard-history tool.
Double Commander: a two-panel alternative for file-heavy work
File Explorer remains suitable for everyday browsing, while Double Commander provides a denser two-panel interface for people who move and organize many files. Its documented capabilities include advanced search, bulk renaming, and archive browsing. The side-by-side layout can make moving files between locations more direct, but it is a different interaction model, not a simpler File Explorer for everyone. It makes most sense as a complement for power users.

LocalSend: transfer between devices on the same network
LocalSend is for sending files, folders, or text between devices connected to the same local network. It can be useful when you want a direct local-network workflow rather than an internet-mediated transfer. Both devices need the app and network access, so it is not a drop-in solution for sending something to a remote person or device.
MPV: a minimalist option for media playback
Windows already includes basic media capabilities, but people who want a minimalist, configurable player may prefer MPV. Its appeal is a focused playback experience rather than a broad media-library interface. Whether that simplicity is an advantage depends on the viewer: users who want a conventional, integrated media app may prefer to keep using the Windows option they already have.

How should you choose among them?
| Tool | Best fit | Relationship to Windows | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerToys | People who want selected window, screen, or workflow utilities | Extends Windows with optional modules | The suite’s module set can change; enable only the features you need. |
| Ditto | People who reuse copied content | Extends the basic clipboard workflow | Clipboard history may retain sensitive material. |
| Double Commander | People who frequently move, search, rename, or browse files | Complements File Explorer with a two-panel workflow | Its denser interface may feel less approachable for casual browsing. |
| LocalSend | People transferring content between their own nearby devices | Adds a local-network sharing path | Both endpoints need the app and access to the same local network. |
| MPV | People who value minimalist, configurable playback | Offers an alternative to basic Windows media features | Its focused approach may not suit someone seeking a general-purpose media library. |
Start with the task, not the app list. If you regularly retrieve old copied text, try a clipboard-history tool; if moving files between devices is the recurring problem, a local transfer app is more relevant. Skip anything whose added workflow or setup is not worth the benefit to you.

Bundling every utility into Windows could add complexity for people who do not need them. Some tools duplicate existing functionality, some use a specialized interface, and local sharing only helps when both devices are set up for it. A sensible Windows approach would make focused utilities discoverable and optional, while keeping familiar built-in workflows available.

There are other open-source options for specific jobs, such as 7-Zip for archives or ShareX for screen capture and recording, but they address separate needs rather than a universal Windows gap. SearchLight is another emerging launcher example; its project documentation says it requires Everything to be running, a dependency that makes it less straightforward as a default recommendation. A tool’s maintenance, dependencies, privacy implications, and overlap with Windows all matter alongside its license.
