Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows 11 is moving toward a more continuous phone-to-PC experience. The big headline: you can pick up certain Android activities—like resuming Spotify and web browsing—on your Windows PC instead of restarting everything from scratch.
In practice, this usually depends on Microsoft’s cross-device features delivered through Phone Link (and Android’s Link to Windows capabilities). Availability and exact app coverage can vary by Windows build, Android version, and the apps themselves.

What this change means for Windows 11 and Android
Instead of treating your Android phone and Windows PC as separate worlds, Microsoft’s goal is to let you continue an activity across devices. Think “resume where I left off,” not “open the same app again.”
For users, that typically shows up as quick handoff and state continuity for select experiences—commonly media playback (Spotify) and browser sessions, plus a range of other supported apps.

Prerequisites you should verify first
Before you hunt for a setting, confirm the foundations. These features generally require a modern Windows 11 build, the right Phone Link configuration, and Android services that can communicate reliably.
- Windows 11: a recent release (often Windows 11 23H2/24H2). If you’re on an older build, you may not see the resume option.
- Microsoft Phone Link: installed and updated from the Microsoft Store.
- Android: Link to Windows app installed (Microsoft names it Link to Windows on Android).
- Connectivity: stable Wi‑Fi and/or Bluetooth, depending on your setup.
- Account alignment: the same Microsoft account used across Phone Link experiences (Windows and Android connection flow).
Check whether your devices support Android app resume
Not every PC/phone combination will show the resume UI immediately. The fastest way to confirm is to check for the relevant toggles inside Phone Link and ensure both sides are updated.
Verify on Windows 11
- Open Start → search Phone Link → open it.
- Go to Settings (gear icon) inside Phone Link.
- Look for categories related to continuity, cross-device, or resume (names vary by build).
If you only see standard features (messages, calls, notifications) but no continuity/resume controls, your Windows build or Phone Link version may not include it yet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerify on Android
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Link to Windows and update it to the latest version available for your device.
- Open Link to Windows and check for permissions and background activity settings.
Set it up with Microsoft Phone Link (the usual path)
For most people, this feature arrives through the Phone Link connection. Here’s the setup sequence that tends to work reliably.
Install and update what you need on Windows 11
- Update Windows: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
- Install or update Phone Link from the Microsoft Store.
- Restart your PC if prompted, especially after a major Phone Link update.
Install and update what you need on Android
- Open Google Play Store → install/update Link to Windows.
- Verify Android version compatibility in the app’s store listing (if your device is very old, support may be limited).
- Ensure battery optimization isn’t aggressively restricting background behavior (details in the troubleshooting section).
Pair your phone in Phone Link
- On Windows 11, open Phone Link.
- Choose pairing method (commonly QR code or Bluetooth pairing).
- On Android, open Link to Windows and complete the pairing steps.
- Grant required permissions (notifications, device accessibility components if requested, and background permissions).
Pairing should result in an always-on “connected” state. If you frequently re-pair, resume won’t be stable.
Enable the resume experience
Exact labels can shift with updates, but you’re looking for the continuity/resume capability within Phone Link settings.

How resuming typically works (Spotify, web browsing, and other apps)
While the implementation details are handled by Microsoft, the user-facing behavior is straightforward: you start an activity on your phone, then continue it on your Windows PC with fewer or no manual steps.
Whether the resume works depends on app support, state handoff permissions, and the connectivity channel remaining available.
Spotify resume
Spotify is commonly one of the headline examples. With support enabled, you should be able to start playback on Android, then continue on your PC without hunting for the track again.
What usually happens in real life: open Phone Link, look for media controls or an activity prompt, then resume playback or continue the session on Windows.
Web browsing resume
Browser resume is often the most noticeable quality-of-life improvement. The feature typically aims to carry over the page or session so you can continue reading without reopening tabs manually.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Browser participation can vary. If you use a third-party browser instead of the default experience supported by Windows/Microsoft, you may get partial handoff (for example, notifications and link sharing) but not full resume.

Other apps that may participate
Microsoft’s continuity approach typically covers a subset of apps that can safely sync state and are designed to allow handoff. Expect coverage to expand over time as updates roll out.
- Media players and music services beyond Spotify may or may not be supported depending on how the app exposes playback state.
- Messaging and calls usually work independently from “resume,” but connectivity issues still affect the overall experience.
- Productivity apps can vary widely—some support deep resume, others only allow link sharing.
Best practices to get reliable resumes
To keep resume behavior consistent, treat Phone Link like a critical background service, not a “when I remember” app.
- Keep both apps updated: Phone Link on Windows and Link to Windows on Android.
- Avoid aggressive battery saving for Link to Windows.
- Keep your connection stable: if Bluetooth frequently drops, try a more stable Wi‑Fi-based setup (or vice versa).
- Use the same Microsoft account on Windows and phone pairing screens.
Troubleshooting when resumes don’t work
If the resume UI is enabled but nothing happens, don’t guess for hours. Work through connectivity, permissions, and update state in that order.
Phone Link shows as connected, but resumes fail
- Restart both sides: reboot Windows 11 and restart your Android phone.
- In Phone Link, verify you’re connected to the correct phone instance (not an old pairing).
- On Android, open Link to Windows → check permissions (especially notification and background permissions).
- Disable battery optimization temporarily for Link to Windows, then test a resume again.
Only some apps resume (for example, Spotify works but browser doesn’t)
This is common. App state handoff isn’t universal.
- Test with Spotify for media continuity to confirm the core feature works.
- For browser resume, try the supported browser path you normally use via Microsoft’s ecosystem.
- Update the apps themselves: Spotify and your browser can both affect whether state is eligible for handoff.
If one app consistently fails, check the app’s permissions inside Android for link/open behavior and background allowances.
Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi drops or device pairing keeps breaking
- Forget and re-pair: remove the Bluetooth pairing entry and re-run Phone Link pairing.
- Check Android Bluetooth settings for “never” or restricted modes (some OEM skins throttle background discovery).
- Confirm both devices are on the same Wi‑Fi network when using Wi‑Fi-assisted continuity.
You don’t see the setting on Windows 11
That usually means one of these is true: you’re behind on updates, Phone Link isn’t updated, or your build doesn’t include the continuity toggle.

- Phone Link notifications: rely on Phone Link to surface content and prompts you can complete on Windows.
- Cross-device browser sync: if you use a browser profile that syncs tabs across devices, you can often continue by opening the same profile on Windows.
These aren’t always as seamless as true “resume,” but they reduce restart friction immediately.
Security and privacy considerations
Handoff features can involve transferring activity context. The safest approach is to ensure you trust your paired devices and control which permissions are granted.
- Confirm Phone Link connection uses your intended Microsoft account.
- Review Android permissions for Link to Windows and revoke anything you don’t need.
- If you share a PC, consider signing out of Phone Link after use.
Real-world examples
Example 1 (Spotify): Start a playlist on Android while commuting. When you arrive, open Phone Link on Windows and resume playback from where you left off.
Example 2 (Web): Read an article on your phone, then continue on your Windows PC with the same page context—so you don’t waste time searching for the tab again.
Example 3 (Work apps): For supported apps, you may be able to switch devices without redoing steps, but coverage varies by app and account state.

FAQs
Will all Android apps resume on Windows 11?
No. Resume/handoff depends on app support and the continuity capabilities exposed through Phone Link and Link to Windows. Spotify and web sessions are common examples, but coverage isn’t universal.
Do I need Bluetooth, or will Wi‑Fi work?
Many setups use either Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi, sometimes both for optimal performance. If Bluetooth is unstable, try improving Wi‑Fi stability and retest; if Wi‑Fi is constrained, you may need Bluetooth-based pairing behavior.
Why does it work on one device but not another?
Windows build version, Phone Link version, Android version, and background permission policies can all differ. Also, your paired account and the phone’s battery optimization settings can determine whether resume state handoff is allowed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does this require a specific browser or Spotify version?
It often depends. Web resume may be limited to certain browser/session formats that can safely share state. Keeping Spotify and your browser updated improves the odds that the app exposes the right state for handoff.
Can I disable the feature?
Yes. In Phone Link settings on Windows, turn off the continuity/resume toggles. You can also restrict Link to Windows permissions on Android if you want to stop background handoff entirely.
Bottom Line
Windows 11’s ability to resume Android experiences—especially Spotify playback and web browsing—aims to reduce the “start over” tax when switching devices. The experience is real, but it’s gated by updates, connectivity, and app eligibility.
If you set up Phone Link and Link to Windows correctly and keep both sides updated, you’ll usually get dependable resume behavior. If not, use the troubleshooting checklist above to pinpoint whether it’s a permission, connectivity, or app-compatibility issue.
