The feature is powered by Microsoft’s Phone Link experience on Windows and the Android app called Link to Windows. Once both are set up on the same Microsoft account and network, Windows can treat your Android phone like a nearby sharing target.

What it really means when Windows 11 adds your Android phone to the Share menu
Normally, Windows Share menus show options like email, Nearby Sharing, and app targets. With this update, your Android phone can appear as a Share recipient—so you can push content directly from Windows to the phone.

- BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.
In practice, it’s usually a combination of two capabilities:
- Windows-to-phone sending via Share sheet destinations (from apps like File Explorer, Photos, and some Microsoft Store apps).
- Phone-to-Windows receiving via Link to Windows notifications and companion features (so the workflow feels bidirectional).
Exact wording can vary by app and Android build, but if setup is correct you should see your Android device name in Share destinations on Windows.
Prerequisites (get these right first)
Before you change any settings, confirm the basics. The most common “it doesn’t show up” issues come from account mismatch, missing permissions, or unsupported app versions.
1) Windows 11 requirements
- Windows 11 with Phone Link available (most current Windows 11 installations include it; if not, install it from the Microsoft Store).
- Phone Link enabled and signed in.
2) Android requirements
- Android phone with the Link to Windows app installed from Google Play.
- Permissions granted when prompted (notably notifications and local network/battery optimizations).
3) Same Microsoft account and basic connectivity
- You must sign into both Phone Link on Windows and Link to Windows on Android using the same Microsoft account.
- Keep devices on the same Wi‑Fi network at least during setup. Sharing can still work across networks in some cases, but setup is more reliable on a shared network.
4) Keep Bluetooth and Nearby features available (often helps)
This doesn’t always decide the outcome, but Bluetooth availability improves discovery. If you disabled Bluetooth or Nearby Sharing globally, turn it back on during setup.
Set up the connection: Phone Link + Link to Windows
If your goal is to get your Android phone to appear in Windows’ Share menu, correct pairing is non-negotiable. Follow these steps in order.
Step 1: Install and open Phone Link on Windows
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Phone Link and open it.
- If it’s missing, install it from the Microsoft Store (publisher: Microsoft Corporation).
Sign in with your Microsoft account when prompted.
Step 2: Install and open Link to Windows on Android
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Link to Windows and install it (developer: Microsoft Corporation).
- Open the app and sign in with the same Microsoft account as Phone Link.
Allow prompts for permissions when they appear. If you skip them, your phone may connect but won’t show up reliably in Share destinations.
Step 3: Pair using the connection wizard
- On Windows, in Phone Link, choose Set up (or the equivalent pairing option).
- On Android, follow the prompts to connect.
- When a pairing code or QR screen appears, confirm it matches and complete the pairing flow.
After pairing, wait 1–3 minutes. Some features take time to finish initial sync, especially after first-time setup.

Share from Windows 11 to your Android phone
Once paired, your Android phone should appear as a destination in the Share menu for supported apps. The exact UI label may vary, but the process is consistent.
Method: Use the Share button (common in modern apps)
- Open the app or folder where your content lives (for example, File Explorer, Photos, or a supported Microsoft app).
- Select the file or photo.
- Click Share (or the share icon).
- Look for your device name under Share targets (often shown as your Android phone name).
- Select your phone and confirm any prompts on Android.
If you don’t see your phone, check the troubleshooting section below—don’t assume the feature is broken.
Method: Share from File Explorer
- Open File Explorer.
- Select one or more files.
- Right-click the selection and choose Share.
- In the Share pane, select your phone destination if it appears.
- Confirm delivery on your Android device.
For multiple files, some Android receivers queue items while others may only accept certain file types. If you send large batches, expect the progress to take longer than a single photo.
What delivery looks like
- You may see a notification on Android indicating a transfer or incoming shared item.
- Some content arrives in a dedicated Link to Windows area; other items open via the default Android handler.
Share from your Android phone to Windows 11
The integration is strongest when both directions work. If your phone can send to Windows reliably, it’s a strong sign the underlying connection is healthy.
Method: Share via Android share sheet
- On Android, open the content you want to share (photo, file, link, document).
- Tap the Share button in the app.
- Choose the Windows destination (commonly shown as the name of your Windows PC via Link to Windows).
- Wait for Windows to receive the item and show it in the relevant Phone Link/Link to Windows activity UI.
If Windows doesn’t appear as a choice on Android, it’s usually a permission or pairing issue, not a “Share menu” issue.
Method: Send from Link to Windows app
Some builds include in-app actions (like sending a specific item type). If you see “Send” or device-related actions inside Link to Windows, use them as a sanity check that the connection is live.
What can (and can’t) be shared
Windows-phone sharing isn’t identical to sending attachments via email. The supported set depends on app capability, file size, and Android’s default handlers.

Commonly supported
- Photos and images (typically JPEG/HEIC depending on device support).
- Links (web URLs usually work well).
- Documents and basic file types supported by the Android handler.
More likely to fail
- Very large files or bulk transfers.
- Special app data formats that don’t have a clear Android import target.
- Protected content (some streaming or DRM-based media can’t be shared as a raw file).
File type and size checks
If you consistently fail on one format, test with a small file of a known-good type (like a JPEG) to confirm the channel works. Then re-test the original file type.

Control permissions, notification prompts, and background access
Even when pairing succeeds, Android battery and notification settings can stop transfers or prevent your device from showing up in Windows share lists.
Android: permissions to verify
- Notifications for Link to Windows (so you can accept incoming shares and see activity).
- Nearby devices / local network permissions if prompted (names differ by Android version).
- Battery optimization exceptions for Link to Windows (otherwise background transfers can be delayed or blocked).
Windows: permissions to verify
- Ensure Phone Link has permission to run in the background.
- Check Windows security pop-ups after installation; allow them if asked.
- Confirm Windows Bluetooth and Nearby Sharing toggles aren’t disabled globally (set them during setup; you can adjust later if needed).
Troubleshooting when your phone doesn’t appear in Share
If your Android phone isn’t listed as a Share destination in Windows 11, work through these in order. Each step removes a common cause.
1) Confirm account match
- In Phone Link on Windows, verify the Microsoft account shown is the one you use on Android.
- In Link to Windows on Android, confirm the same Microsoft account is signed in.
A mismatched account is the fastest explanation for “paired but not discoverable.”
2) Re-check connectivity and discovery
- Connect both devices to the same Wi‑Fi.
- Keep the devices within normal range for discovery.
- Wait 1–2 minutes after pairing before re-opening the Share menu.
3) Restart the right components
- Close Phone Link and re-open it on Windows.
- On Android, force-stop Link to Windows and re-open it (Android Settings > Apps > Link to Windows > Force stop).
Then open Phone Link again and try Share from Windows.
4) Update both apps
Sharing integrations depend on the client apps. Update them from official stores:
- Windows: update Phone Link in the Microsoft Store.
- Android: update Link to Windows in Google Play.
After updating, reboot once if you notice repeated UI inconsistencies.

5) Check Android battery optimization
- Open Android Settings.
- Search for battery optimization.
- Find Link to Windows and set it to Not optimized or Allowed.
Some OEMs label this differently (Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus). The intent is to let Link to Windows run when needed.
6) Verify notifications permission on Android
If notifications are blocked, you may miss the incoming-share prompt on Android. That can make it look like Windows couldn’t send.
Fixes if Phone Link pairing fails or sharing is delayed
Pairing issues tend to show up as timeouts, stuck progress, or “connected but features missing.” Use these resets to restore the channel.
Remove and re-pair (cleanest reset)
- In Phone Link on Windows, open settings for the connected device and choose the option to remove or disconnect.
- On Android, open Link to Windows and remove the Windows connection (if the app provides that control).
- Restart both devices.
- Pair again from scratch using the wizard.
This takes a few minutes but often resolves stubborn missing Share destinations.
Try a different Wi‑Fi network
If you’re on a corporate or guest network with restrictions, discovery can break. Test on a trusted home network or a phone hotspot (temporary hotspot) to confirm.
Disable VPNs and aggressive firewalls temporarily
VPN apps and strict Windows firewall profiles can interfere with the device handshake. If you use a VPN, turn it off and retry the Share flow.

Privacy and security considerations
Sharing integrations move content across devices, so it’s smart to treat them like any other connection. A few practical steps make things safer.
Keep the connection scoped
- Only pair devices you trust and sign in with the account you intend to use for sharing.
- If you sell or replace a phone, disconnect it from Phone Link promptly.
Be mindful with what you share
Sharing a link or document is convenient, but verify the content before sending—especially if multiple people use one Windows device account.
Alternatives if the Share menu integration isn’t available
Sometimes the integration isn’t present yet in your specific app build, region, or Windows update channel. If your phone doesn’t appear in Share after all troubleshooting, use a fallback.
Use Nearby Sharing (Windows to phone)
If Nearby Sharing works between your Windows PC and Android (availability varies by device), you can still send files without the Share menu destination.
Send via email or cloud link
For one-off items, email attachments or a shared link (like OneDrive or another cloud provider) is the fastest workaround.
Use a cable or local transfer tool
For large batches, USB transfer can be more predictable than cross-device sharing.
Use the Phone Link features you already have
If Phone Link isn’t showing up as a Share target but Phone Link itself shows your phone activity, you may still have working pathways for content import inside Phone Link.
