For most people, Windows 11 is the better choice in October 2026—but only if the PC meets its hardware requirements. Windows 10 Home and Pro reached the end of general support on October 14, 2025. Those PCs still work, but they no longer receive ordinary free security updates or technical support. If your computer qualifies, Microsoft offers a free upgrade; if it does not, consider a replacement or a limited Extended Security Updates (ESU) bridge.
Windows 11 vs. Windows 10 at a glance
| Factor | Windows 11 | Windows 10 Home and Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Support status | Support depends on the version and edition. Microsoft’s release-health table lists Windows 11 version 26H2, build 26300, as available September 29, 2026; Home and Pro updates are listed through October 10, 2028. | General-channel version 22H2 is the final release, and support has ended. Enrolled eligible devices may receive limited security updates through ESU. |
| Upgrade cost | Free upgrade from Windows 10 for qualifying PCs. | Continuing to use the existing installation does not itself require an upgrade, but ordinary support has ended. |
| Hardware eligibility | Requires supported hardware, including a supported processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot, at least 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage. | Runs on PCs that may not meet Windows 11 requirements, though that does not restore ended support. |
| Features | Includes newer interface and workflow features, with some requiring specific hardware or supported apps. | Has familiar workflows and some related features, but does not receive the same new feature updates as a supported Windows 11 release. |
Support dates differ across Windows 11 versions and editions. Microsoft’s supported versions of Windows client page lists servicing dates for each release; a PC’s version matters, not just the Windows 11 name.

Why Windows 11 is the better default for most PCs
The main reason is support, not a guarantee of better speed. Windows 10 Home and Pro general-channel support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says a Windows 10 PC continues to function, but ordinary free software and security updates, security fixes, and technical assistance are no longer provided. That makes an eligible, suitable PC a good candidate for the free Windows 11 upgrade.

The value depends on how you use the computer; a feature list is not proof that every person will be more productive. Check whether your PC can run Windows 11
Meeting the minimum requirements is necessary, but it does not guarantee that every feature or demanding workload will run well. Microsoft’s requirements include:
- A 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores that appears on Microsoft’s supported processor list.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot and TPM 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A display larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution.
Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use also require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements for the full current list, including supported processors and feature-specific requirements.
Use Windows Update or PC Health Check
Check Windows Update on the Windows 10 PC or use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app to confirm whether it is eligible. Rollout timing can vary by device, so eligibility and immediate availability are not quite the same thing. If the device is not offered the upgrade, confirm its compatibility before assuming it needs to be replaced.

Upgrade safely if your PC qualifies
- Check eligibility: Open Windows Update or run PC Health Check and confirm that the device qualifies.
- Back up important files: Microsoft recommends backing up before installing a new Windows version. Choose a backup method that you can access if the installation fails or files are missing afterward.
- Check critical apps and accessories: Microsoft expects most Windows 10 software and accessories to work in Windows 11, but advises verifying specific products with their publisher or manufacturer.
- Install through Microsoft’s upgrade route: Use the Windows Update offer when it is available for the device, then follow the on-screen prompts. The upgrade is free for qualifying PCs.

If your PC cannot upgrade
An ineligible PC is not immediately unusable, but Windows 10’s ended general support changes the risk of keeping it online. Microsoft identifies two broad options: use consumer ESU as a temporary bridge if eligible, or move to a Windows 11 PC. ESU is limited to eligible enrolled devices and provides critical and important security updates; it is not a return to ordinary feature updates or general technical support. Check Microsoft’s current Windows 10 ESU program guidance for eligibility and enrollment terms, which can change.
Whether to bridge or replace depends on how long you need the computer, its condition, the apps and accessories you rely on, your budget, and the effort of moving files and settings. A replacement is a sensible option when the PC is unsuitable for your needs or you need a supported Windows system beyond the bridge period; it is not necessary merely because Windows 10 has stopped receiving general support.
Is Windows 11 faster than Windows 10?
There is no basis here for saying Windows 11 will make every PC faster. Microsoft’s April 2023 Windows 11 Pro laptop comparison reported selected benchmark results—up to 68.9% higher PCMark 10 overall rating, up to 34.3% higher PCMark 10 applications rating, up to 22.5% higher SYSmark 2018 rating, and up to 22.3% higher SYSmark 25 rating. The comparisons used selected HP and Lenovo systems of different generations running Windows 11 Pro and Windows 10 Pro, and named Principled Technologies as the benchmark source. Those vendor-published historical results do not isolate the operating system across identical hardware or predict the result on your PC. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 Pro laptop comparison for its test context.

Choose Windows 11 if
- Your PC meets the requirements and you want a supported Windows installation.
- You are setting up a new Windows PC.
- You will use Windows 11 features such as File Explorer tabs, Live Captions, or its newer window and gaming options.
Keep Windows 10 temporarily if
- Your current PC cannot upgrade and you need time to plan a migration or replacement.
- You understand that general support has ended and have checked whether you can enroll in the limited ESU program.
Windows 10’s separate LTSC and IoT editions have different lifecycles from ordinary consumer Home and Pro; their support dates should not be inferred from the general-channel Home/Pro status.
