For most Windows 10 users, the biggest change is not the redesigned interface: it is that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, while Windows 11 requires specific hardware. If your PC qualifies, Microsoft offers the upgrade for free. Check eligibility first, then weigh the features you use, app and device compatibility, and the effort of moving before you install.
What changes most when you move to Windows 11?
Windows 11 brings a redesigned experience and changes to some built-in features. Microsoft’s own comparison lists Smart App Control for Windows 11, and Phone Link support for Android and iPhone on Windows 11 versus Android on Windows 10. Snap Assist is available on both; Microsoft describes Windows 11 as able to remember layouts. These are Microsoft’s feature descriptions, not independent tests, and availability can depend on edition, hardware, region, or updates. See Microsoft’s Windows comparison and lifecycle information.

There is no evidence here for a universal speed or battery-life improvement. Performance depends on the PC and workload, so treat claims that Windows 11 will make every computer faster or last longer on a charge with skepticism.

How does support and security differ now?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date. You can continue using the operating system, but it is no longer receiving the ordinary security maintenance users may expect. Microsoft describes Extended Security Updates as an option for eligible consumers and organizations; check Microsoft’s current guidance for eligibility, enrollment, and pricing.

Windows 10 version 22H2 was its final feature update. Windows 11 follows an annual feature-release cadence with monthly quality updates; support duration varies by edition. Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle FAQ explains the lifecycle details.
Will your current PC run Windows 11?
Eligibility is not determined by the PC’s age or RAM alone. Microsoft’s minimum requirements include all of the following:
Rank #2
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- A compatible 64-bit processor or system-on-a-chip, at least 1 GHz, with two or more cores.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, plus TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A high-definition display at least 9 inches diagonally, with 8 bits per color channel.
Some Windows 11 features need more than these minimums. Windows 11 Home also requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account for initial device setup; internet access is needed for updates and some features. Consult Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements for the full details.

Microsoft says upgrade rollout timing varies by device, and eligible devices should be running a currently supported version of Windows 10 as well as meeting Windows 11’s hardware requirements. Does the upgrade cost anything?
Microsoft says upgrading an eligible Windows 10 device to Windows 11 is free, subject to meeting the minimum system requirements. The upgrade offer does not make an incompatible PC eligible, and the timing of its availability in Windows Update can vary by device. If your PC fails the check, do not assume that adding RAM alone will fix the issue: other requirements, including the processor, TPM, and firmware, also matter. Replacing a PC is one option, but first establish why the current device is ineligible and whether replacement fits your needs and budget.

- Check eligibility: Run Microsoft PC Health Check or look in Windows Update. If the device is not eligible, use Microsoft’s result to identify the issue rather than relying on its age or memory capacity as a proxy.
- Back up files and data: Microsoft says, “Microsoft always recommends backing up files before installing a new Windows version.” OneDrive is one option; a separate external drive is another way to keep a local copy.
- Confirm important apps and peripherals: Check with the software publisher or device manufacturer for Windows 11 compatibility, especially for work-critical applications, printers, and other connected hardware. Microsoft notes that installation may remove apps known to cause upgrade problems or not work correctly with Windows 11.
- Plan for the installation: Microsoft warns that downloading and installing Windows 11 can take longer than a typical Windows 10 feature update. Choose a time when you can leave the PC available and do not depend on it being ready immediately.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ covers the free upgrade, preparation, and installation. If you are counting on returning to Windows 10, check Microsoft’s current rollback instructions and time limits before upgrading; do not assume you can reverse the change indefinitely.

How to decide whether to upgrade
- Your PC is eligible and you want ongoing security maintenance: The free Windows 11 upgrade is the direct path to a supported Windows version, subject to your edition’s lifecycle and your apps’ compatibility.
- Your PC is eligible but a critical app or device is uncertain: Confirm compatibility with its publisher or manufacturer before starting, and keep a usable backup.
- Your PC is ineligible: Adding memory may not resolve the blocker. Weigh continuing to use Windows 10, checking Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates option if eligible, or moving to a compatible PC. Each choice has different support, cost, and compatibility consequences.
