Choose a Mac if your work requires local Xcode; choose Windows 11 for Windows-native software, tools, or testing. For many web, backend, and cross-platform projects, either can work—including Linux-oriented development on Windows through WSL 2. Decide based on the tools and target platforms your workflow actually requires, not a blanket claim about which OS is “better for coding.”
Start with your required tools and target platforms
Before comparing operating systems, list the applications and environments your project must build for and test against. A useful decision starts with these questions:
- Which operating systems and devices must your software support?
- Does the workflow require Xcode, Visual Studio, a Windows-only application, or another specific tool?
- Does production run on Linux, Windows, or both—and how closely must local development match it?
- Will containers or virtual machines run locally, and does your machine meet their current hardware and architecture requirements?
- Do employer policies, device management, or existing licenses constrain your choice?
- What hardware and budget are available for the workload?
These requirements narrow the choice more reliably than generalizations about compatibility or productivity. The official documentation cited here describes tool support and system requirements, not a matched-hardware comparison of speed, battery life, reliability, or developer productivity.
When Windows 11 is the better fit
Windows-native software and tools
Windows 11 is the direct fit when you need to build, test, or administer Windows-specific software and environments. Microsoft’s Windows developer tools include Windows Terminal, WSL, PowerToys, and Windows Developer Configurations. For Windows-only tools or testing, using Windows as the host avoids depending on an extra environment for those tasks.

Linux development through WSL 2
Windows can also support Linux-oriented command-line work through Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Microsoft describes WSL as part of a developer’s inner development loop, including a workflow that uses Linux tools and packages and then packages a service as a Docker container for deployment to an Ubuntu virtual machine. See Microsoft’s WSL FAQ.
For Docker Desktop’s documented WSL 2 setup on Windows, its installation prerequisites include at least 8 GB of system RAM, a supported 64-bit processor with SLAT, and hardware virtualization enabled in BIOS or UEFI. The 8 GB figure is a setup prerequisite, not a guarantee that 8 GB will be enough for a full development workload. Check Docker’s current requirements before buying or configuring a machine, since supported versions can change.

Know where your files and tools run
Docker recommends storing code inside the Linux distribution when using its WSL 2 workflow. Its WSL 2 development instructions show how to connect a VS Code window to that distribution using the VS Code WSL extension, while the editor client remains on Windows. This arrangement crosses the Windows–Linux boundary, so keep track of where project files live and which environment runs each tool.
When macOS is the better fit
Local development with Xcode
If your workflow requires local Xcode, choose a Mac that can run the Xcode version your project needs. Apple documents Xcode’s capabilities for building and testing apps for Apple platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Its Xcode documentation and version-specific system requirements list macOS compatibility, SDKs, and supported targets. Check the requirements for the version used by your project; they vary between releases.

Apple silicon requirements for visionOS and Xcode 27
Apple’s Xcode system requirements state: “Developing for visionOS requires a Mac with Apple silicon.” Separately, Apple’s Xcode 27 release notes state: “Xcode 27 will only install and run on Apple silicon Macs.” The Xcode 27 restriction is specific to that release; check Apple’s compatibility table rather than applying it to older Xcode versions.
Windows-specific work on a Mac
If a project depends on Windows-native applications, frameworks, or testing, macOS may mean adding a Windows environment or using a remote Windows machine. Whether that is a workable substitute depends on the exact application and your employer’s policies; verify both before relying on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Containers and remote development: the host is not the whole environment
Visual Studio Code documents Docker support on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and distinguishes local development from remote development. A remote environment can provide the same operating system as production, which may be more important than the developer machine’s host OS when environment parity is the priority. See VS Code’s guide to choosing a development environment.
Windows offers a documented WSL 2 route for Linux-oriented container work, while Docker also supports macOS as a host. These support facts do not establish which platform runs containers faster. If exact parity matters, evaluate a development container or remote machine that matches the production environment.
Quick Recap
Choose by workflow
| Workflow | Practical choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, or tvOS development | Mac | That the Mac supports the Xcode release, macOS version, SDKs, and targets required by the project; Apple lists these in its Xcode requirements. |
| visionOS development or Xcode 27 | Apple silicon Mac | Apple specifies Apple silicon for visionOS development and for running Xcode 27 in its system requirements and Xcode 27 release notes. |
| Windows desktop software, Windows-specific tooling, or Windows testing | Windows 11, unless your team provides a supported remote Windows environment | Confirm that the required tools and team setup are supported; Microsoft documents its Windows developer tools. |
| Linux-oriented web, backend, or container development | Either Windows 11 with WSL 2 or macOS can fit | Check setup requirements and decide whether local development or a remote, production-matched environment better suits the project. See the WSL FAQ and VS Code environment guide. |
| Mixed toolchain | The OS that supports the non-negotiable tools and targets with the least extra setup | List required IDEs, SDKs, test targets, employer requirements, and any remote or virtualized environments before choosing. |
