Use Windows Update in Settings first for routine security and quality updates, and for a Windows 11 feature update when it is offered to your PC. The Windows Update Assistant is a manual option for installing a feature update that has not arrived automatically—but it is not the normal tool for monthly updates, and it does not bypass compatibility limits. Microsoft recommends waiting until Windows Update offers a Windows 11 upgrade before using the separate Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
What is the difference between Windows Update and Update Assistant?
Windows Update is the built-in update service in Settings. It delivers both quality updates and feature updates, and shows what Microsoft is offering to your device. The Windows Update Assistant is a separate utility for manually installing a feature update when the device has not received it through Windows Update. Microsoft describes that use case on its Windows Update Assistant support page.

Names matter: Microsoft also offers a Windows 11 Installation Assistant, a distinct tool for upgrading eligible devices to Windows 11. Advice about the Windows Update Assistant should not be assumed to apply identically to that Windows 11-specific installer.

- Quality updates arrive more frequently and mainly contain security updates and smaller fixes.
- Feature updates add functionality and capabilities and move Windows to a newer release.
Both types are delivered through Windows Update. The Windows Update Assistant is intended for manual feature-update installation, not as a replacement for the regular quality-update route. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows Update FAQ.

Which option should you use?
| What you need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Regular security fixes and smaller updates | Windows Update in Settings | It is the standard route for quality updates. |
| A feature update Windows has offered to your PC | Windows Update in Settings | It is the normal first choice and reflects the offer available for your device. |
| A feature update has not arrived automatically, and you want to install it manually | Windows Update Assistant, if your hardware is supported | Microsoft identifies this as the assistant’s purpose. |
| Upgrade an eligible PC to Windows 11 | Start with Windows Update; consider the Windows 11 Installation Assistant only in line with Microsoft’s guidance | Microsoft recommends waiting until Windows Update offers the Windows 11 upgrade. |
There is no evidence in Microsoft’s guidance that either route is universally faster or more reliable. Download time depends mainly on your internet connection speed, network settings, and the size of the update.
How to check for updates in Settings
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Review the updates offered for your PC and follow the prompts to download and install them.
Windows may offer a feature release at different times to different devices. Microsoft uses staged rollout mechanisms, including compatibility checks, so an update not appearing yet does not by itself mean something is wrong. See Microsoft’s Windows update installation guidance and Windows Update FAQ.

When to consider an assistant—and when not to
Use Windows Update Assistant for a manual feature update
If a feature update has not reached your device through Windows Update and you want to install it manually, the Windows Update Assistant may be an option on supported x86/64 hardware. It is not supported on ARM-based PCs, and a manual route does not remove Windows 11 eligibility requirements.

For a Windows 11 upgrade, heed the offer-first recommendation
Microsoft recommends waiting until Windows Update offers the upgrade before using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. A missing offer can reflect staged availability or a compatibility issue, so check the device’s eligibility rather than assuming the installer is a workaround. Microsoft’s Ways to install Windows 11 page covers the available installation routes.

Check compatibility and organization policy first
Windows 11 has minimum system requirements. Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements information to assess eligibility. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, contact the IT administrator before changing the update route or timing; the organization may control when upgrades are available.

Save your work and back up important files before a feature upgrade. Microsoft notes that upgrading to Windows 11 usually takes longer than a typical Windows 10 feature update. Windows Update may let you schedule the installation after downloading, but the overall time varies with the update size, network settings, and connection speed.
