A standard user generally cannot disable User Account Control (UAC) across a Windows 11 device without administrator authorization. If Windows asks for an administrator username and password, you need credentials for an administrator account or help from the device’s owner or IT administrator; there is no supported standard-user workaround.
Why Windows asks for an administrator password
UAC helps prevent unauthorized changes to Windows by prompting when an action needs administrator-level permission. Standard accounts are intended for routine use. Administrator accounts can change system settings, install software, and access all files, which is why Microsoft recommends limiting the number of administrators.

If a UAC prompt requests credentials, enter the username and password for an account with administrator privileges. If you do not have them, contact the person who manages the computer. On a school- or employer-managed PC, contact IT; organization policies may also control the setting.
How an authorized administrator changes UAC notifications
Microsoft’s Windows 11 settings route is through Control Panel. An administrator can use these steps to select a notification level:
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security.
- Select Change User Account Control settings.
- Move the slider to the desired level, then select OK.
- If Windows requests authorization, approve the change with an administrator account.
This changes UAC notification behavior; it does not change a standard account into an administrator account.
What the UAC slider options mean
The available levels control when Windows displays notifications. The names below are Microsoft’s labels; the default is the second option.

| Setting | Effect |
|---|---|
| Always notify | Shows notifications whenever apps try to install software or make changes to the computer, and when you make changes to Windows settings. |
| Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer (default) | Notifies you when apps try to make changes, but not when you make changes to Windows settings. |
| Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop) | Uses the same notification conditions as the default but does not dim the desktop during the prompt. |
| Never notify (Disable UAC) | Turns off UAC notifications. Microsoft says this option is not recommended due to security concerns. |
Why disabling UAC is discouraged
With fewer or no prompts, you may not be alerted when a program attempts to install software or change the device. Microsoft explicitly cautions against choosing Never notify (Disable UAC). Reducing notifications does not grant a standard user administrator rights, and it is not a way to bypass an administrator prompt.
If you only need one change
Ask an administrator to perform or approve the specific task rather than turning off UAC for the device. This keeps the permission boundary intact and avoids suppressing prompts that can alert users to other system changes.
