Windows 11 Troubleshooting: Fix Common PC Errors

Find the right Windows 11 fix for update failures, internet problems, startup errors, stop codes, and malfunctioning devices—starting with the least disruptive steps.

For most Windows 11 problems, begin with the matching troubleshooter in the Get Help app, then move to a more disruptive recovery option only if needed. The right path depends on the symptom: update failures, connection problems, startup failures, stop codes, or a device that is not working. Back up important files before recovery work that could affect them.

Before troubleshooting: protect your files and choose the least disruptive step

Start with a diagnostic that matches the problem rather than trying unrelated fixes. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooters page lists Get Help tools for Windows Update, network and internet, audio, Bluetooth, camera, printers, program compatibility, video playback, and Windows Media Player, among other diagnostics. Follow the selected tool’s prompts; a troubleshooter can identify or address some problems, but it does not guarantee a fix.

Before using recovery options, copy important files somewhere safe if you can. A USB drive is one way to do that. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can cause data loss, so check the impact of the specific option before proceeding. Its Recovery options in Windows guide recommends starting with the least disruptive option that fits the situation.

Windows Update will not install or is stuck

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first

  1. Open the Get Help app and select the Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow its prompts to check for and address update problems. Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter page describes this as the recommended starting point on Windows 11.
  2. Restart the PC when the troubleshooter finishes, then check Windows Update again.

If the update still fails

Use Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guide to follow the instructions for the error code or symptom you see. Check that the PC has an internet connection and enough available disk space when those are relevant to the error. The guide covers cases such as an update stuck at 0% or 100%, and an installation that stops between 51% and 99%. Avoid deleting update files or folders unless an official step specifically calls for it and explains how to proceed.

Wi-Fi says connected, but the internet or an app does not work

Check whether the problem is the connection or one app

A Wi-Fi connection indicator means the PC is connected to a wireless network; it does not prove that a particular website or app is reachable. Try another app or website and, if possible, another device on the same network. If only one app is affected, the issue may be app-specific or related to a firewall rather than the Wi-Fi connection itself.

Run the network troubleshooter

  1. Open Get Help and choose the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Follow the prompts to diagnose the connection.
  2. For Wi-Fi-specific guidance, consult Microsoft’s Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows page.

If you use Ethernet

Check that the cable is firmly connected and try another router port if one is available. If Ethernet fails on multiple PCs, Microsoft identifies the router, internet service provider, or network adapter as possible sources. Its Ethernet connection troubleshooting guide provides further checks.

Windows will not start or is stuck in a restart loop

Try Startup Repair in Windows Recovery Environment

Startup Repair can scan for certain problems that prevent Windows from starting and attempt to repair them. It is not a guaranteed fix. In Windows Recovery Environment, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, then follow the on-screen instructions. Microsoft’s Startup Repair guide explains the process.

An encrypted PC may ask for its BitLocker recovery key before you can use recovery tools. If Windows starts again, back up important files before trying broader recovery options. Microsoft’s recovery guide describes the available choices and warns that some may affect or remove data.

The PC restarts unexpectedly or shows a stop code

Record the error and consider recent changes

Write down the stop code and any “What failed” module text displayed on the blue screen. Microsoft says stop-code errors can be caused by hardware, drivers, or software. If the issue began just after adding new hardware, shut down the PC and remove that hardware as an initial diagnostic step, if it is safe and practical to do so. The Blue Screen errors guide explains possible causes and troubleshooting.

Use Safe Mode if normal startup is unreliable

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers, which can help you continue diagnosing a PC that cannot start reliably in normal mode. Use Windows Recovery Environment to open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, choose Restart, then select a Safe Mode option from the startup list. Microsoft’s Windows startup settings page explains the available startup options. For broader guidance on unexpected restarts, see Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting page.

Update removal may be relevant when a problem began after an update, while reinstalling Windows or restoring the PC to an earlier point can have broader effects. Check Microsoft’s recovery options guide for the scope and data consequences of each option before using it.
