Windows 11 Transparency Effects: Should You Turn Them Off?

Windows 11 lets you turn off translucent surfaces in Settings. Here’s how—and why any performance improvement is uncertain.

Turning off Transparency effects makes Windows 11’s translucent, blurred surfaces more opaque. It may also help responsiveness in some situations, but there is no published measurement here showing a specific speed gain from this toggle alone. You can disable it in Settings and decide whether the plainer look suits you.

What transparency effects change

Windows 11 uses slightly transparent surfaces with an acrylic blur, allowing some background color or content to show through. Microsoft describes the setting as a way to make window backgrounds more opaque when switched off: Microsoft Support’s accessibility guidance.

How to turn off transparency in Windows 11

Use either of these documented Settings routes:

  • Settings > Personalization > Colors: switch off Transparency effects.
  • Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects: switch off Transparency effects.

The setting is optional, and either route changes the same visual effect. Microsoft’s instructions are available in its Windows accessibility settings guide.

Will turning it off make Windows 11 faster?

Possibly, but do not expect a guaranteed or easily measurable improvement. Microsoft says that Windows 11 visual effects can use system resources and that adjusting them may improve responsiveness: Microsoft’s performance guidance. That is general guidance, not a quantified result for the transparency switch specifically.

A Yahoo Tech reproduction of an article dated August 29, 2026, characterizes the performance impact of disabling transparency as small and unlikely to be noticeable on modern hardware: the article. That is an author’s assessment, not a controlled benchmark. No percentage, time saving, or cross-device result is established, so treat the change primarily as a visual preference.

Transparency and animation are separate settings

Turning off transparency does not turn off animation. The two options affect different parts of the interface, and you can change either one independently.

Setting What changes What it is useful for Performance evidence
Transparency effects Translucent, acrylic-blurred surfaces become more opaque. A simpler, less transparent appearance. Microsoft says visual effects can use resources generally; no isolated numerical gain is established for this setting.
Animation effects Interface motion and transitions are reduced. Minimizing visual distractions or motion. No isolated numerical gain is established for this setting; perceived snappiness is subjective.

To change animation separately, go to Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects and switch off Animation effects. Microsoft presents this as a way to minimize visual distractions: Microsoft Support.

For more control over Windows visual effects

Windows also offers a broader set of visual-effect options. Open Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, then use the Visual Effects tab to review individual controls. The Adjust for best performance preset turns off effects broadly; if you want to keep some, choose individual options rather than applying the preset. Microsoft outlines these choices in its Windows 11 performance tips.

Choose the change that fits your priorities

  1. Notice how your current interface looks and feels before changing anything.
  2. Turn off transparency, animation, or both—one setting at a time—depending on whether you want opaque surfaces, less motion, or both.
  3. Use your PC as usual and judge whether the appearance or responsiveness is better for you.
  4. If you dislike the trade-off, return to the same Settings page and switch the effect back on.
