If Windows 11 cannot synchronize with a time server, first check Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then use w32tm to identify the configured source and check whether the server can be reached. The right fix depends on whether the PC follows a work or school domain policy or uses a manually configured time server.
Check Windows 11 date, time, and time-zone settings
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically. Check that the time zone is correct, or enable automatic time-zone setting if it suits your location and device.
- Select Sync now if the button is available, and check whether Windows reports that synchronization succeeded.
If automatic setting is off, Windows also lets you correct the date and time manually on this page. A clock that is significantly wrong can interfere with Windows Update, so correct it before treating update trouble as a separate issue. Microsoft’s date and time settings guide documents these controls; its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance also notes the relevance of correct time settings.

To ask Windows to rediscover its sources and try synchronization again, run:
w32tm /resync /rediscoverKeep the complete response, including any error wording. The message “The computer didn’t resync because no time data was available” is a clue to investigate the source, DNS, server behavior, and network path; it does not by itself identify which one failed. Determine whether the PC is domain-managed
Most domain-joined Windows computers synchronize through the Active Directory domain hierarchy, rather than directly from a public time server. The forest-root PDC emulator is the exception that obtains time from an upstream source. A work or school device may therefore be following an intentional policy even if its displayed source is unfamiliar.

net start w32timeDo not run it on a managed PC without checking with the organization’s IT administrator. A standalone PC and a domain-managed PC do not necessarily have the same intended time source.
Check DNS and NTP network access
Windows Time synchronization uses NTP over UDP port 123. A configured server name must resolve in DNS, and the host must actually provide NTP service. If the name resolves but no response comes back, a firewall or network policy may be blocking the request or reply. Microsoft notes that a non-Microsoft firewall can block UDP 123; do not disable a firewall wholesale to test synchronization.

The command samples clock offset and can help establish whether the target responds, but it should be considered alongside the source, peer list, DNS result, and firewall or network policy. On a managed network, ask the administrator to verify the permitted route and NTP service.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

How do I change the time server in Windows 11?
First confirm that a manual peer is actually the intended configuration. Microsoft documents this example for a client that should use manual peers:
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntpserver.contoso.com clock.adatum.com" /syncfromflags:manual /updateThe hostnames are illustrative only, not recommended public servers. Use the server specified by your network administrator or another source appropriate to your configuration; do not paste the example as-is. Microsoft’s guidance discusses using three or more peers when an administrator configures multiple peers, and treating a second peer as a fallback when only two are configured. For a domain-managed PC, confirm policy before switching from hierarchy sourcing to manual peers.

Leave registry changes as a last resort
W32Time has registry settings, but Microsoft warns that invalid values can cause unrecoverable errors. Prefer the Windows Settings page and documented w32tm commands. If the source or configuration remains unclear—especially on a domain-managed PC—ask an administrator to review it rather than editing registry values by guesswork.
