If Windows 11 stays on “Please Wait” after you enter your password, restart the PC once. If the screen still hangs, test sign-in in Safe Mode, then try another account if one is available. These checks help narrow the problem; the message alone does not identify a single cause or mean that your password is wrong.
1. Restart once and note when the problem began
At the sign-in screen, select the Power button, then choose Restart. Microsoft says, “Restarting can clear temporary system errors that may be causing the problem.” Microsoft’s Windows sign-in troubleshooting guide recommends restarting as an initial check.

If you can reach the sign-in screen again but the hang returns after entering your password, note whether it started after a particular change, such as a Windows update. Timing can help guide later troubleshooting, but an update immediately preceding the issue does not prove it caused it.
2. Test sign-in in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with basic drivers and settings. If sign-in works there, that narrows the investigation but does not, by itself, confirm what caused the normal startup hang.

- From the sign-in screen, select the Power button.
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart.
- At Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the PC restarts and displays Startup Settings, press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Sign in using your account password. PIN and biometric sign-in options are unavailable in Safe Mode.
These are Microsoft’s documented steps for reaching Safe Mode from the sign-in screen.
3. If Safe Mode works, isolate startup software carefully
A successful Safe Mode sign-in suggests the issue may be related to something that loads during a normal startup, but further checks are needed. Microsoft Learn recommends using a clean-start process to investigate startup problems and checking Event Viewer for relevant errors.
- Use Microsoft’s clean-start troubleshooting guidance to test whether a startup service or program is involved.
- Change one startup item or service at a time where practical, so you can identify which change affects sign-in.
- Review Event Viewer for errors around the time the hang occurred. Treat an error as a diagnostic clue, not proof that it caused the problem.
- Restore normal startup settings after testing.
4. Try another existing account
If the PC already has another account, try signing in with it. Microsoft recommends this as another way to narrow a sign-in problem. If the other account works, investigate the affected account rather than assuming the result proves its profile is corrupted.

5. Choose a recovery option based on access and data risk
If normal sign-in remains blocked, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) offers several options. Which ones are available depends on the device and its recovery setup. Prefer a less disruptive option that fits what happened, and back up important files where possible: some recovery choices can remove data or apps.
| Option | When it may fit | Data and settings impact |
|---|---|---|
| System Restore | A suitable restore point is available and you want to roll back system changes. | Rolls back system files and settings without affecting personal files, according to Microsoft’s recovery-options overview. |
| Uninstall a recent update | The hang began after an update and WinRE offers the option. | Removes a recent update; the cited overview does not specify a universal effect on personal files, apps, or settings. Review the prompts before proceeding. |
| Startup Repair | Windows has a relevant startup failure and the repair option is available. | Microsoft Learn describes it for applicable startup problems; the cited guidance does not state a universal data-impact guarantee. Read the on-screen prompts and back up important files where possible. |
| Quick machine recovery | The PC meets the version and edition conditions and repeated startup failures have brought it into recovery. | For Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, Microsoft documents a recovery-mode connection to Windows Update to check for a Microsoft-provided fix. Applying such a fix does not reset the PC or affect files, apps, or settings. Home has the feature enabled by default; Pro and Enterprise may require an IT administrator to enable it. See Microsoft’s Quick machine recovery guidance. |
| Reset this PC | Less disruptive recovery choices have not resolved the problem. | Reinstalls Windows. The available choices include keeping personal files, but apps and settings may be removed; read the selected reset option carefully. See Microsoft’s recovery-options overview. |
| Reinstall from recovery media | Other recovery paths have failed or a reinstall is otherwise necessary. | Reinstalling from a recovery drive removes personal files, apps, and settings. Microsoft notes that a manufacturer’s recovery image typically includes device-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft installation media may not. Check your PC maker’s official support page for your exact model. See Microsoft’s recovery-options overview and recovery-drive guidance. |
Reach Windows Recovery Environment
If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart to open the recovery options, then look under Troubleshoot > Advanced options. The options shown can vary by device. If Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen, follow Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance for entering WinRE and choosing an appropriate option.
Before resetting or reinstalling, protect important files if you can. If the PC is managed by work or school, ask IT for help when the recovery options do not resolve the issue.

The wording “Please Wait” or “Welcome” after password entry does not establish that the password is incorrect, that the account profile is corrupt, or that a particular update, malware infection, or storage failure is responsible. Microsoft’s guidance addresses sign-in and startup troubleshooting without naming one universal cause. Use the results of Safe Mode, another account, and recovery checks to decide what to investigate next rather than making destructive changes based only on the message.
