A Windows 11 Start menu changing between six and eight columns has been reported by one user, but the available evidence does not establish a cause or a dependable fix. Start by checking whether the selected display, resolution, or scaling changes when the layout does; Microsoft recommends the display’s marked “Recommended” resolution and says an unexpected resolution change may indicate that the graphics driver needs updating. These are sensible diagnostic checks, not confirmed causes of this specific symptom.
What is known about the six-to-eight-column change
One Windows 11 user reported that the Start menu alternated between six and eight columns at 2560 × 1440 resolution and 100% scaling. The user suspected a game might briefly change the desktop resolution, but described that as a guess, not a confirmed trigger. Restarting explorer.exe restored eight columns temporarily in that case; the menu later became stuck at six. That single report does not show that a game, resolution change, or Explorer restart is responsible in other cases. Read the user report.

Check whether display settings change with the menu
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If you use more than one monitor, select the display where the Start menu appears.
- Record its resolution and scale. If the layout changes again, revisit the same page and check whether either value or the selected display has changed.
- Use the resolution Windows marks Recommended. Microsoft says an unexpected resolution change may mean the graphics driver needs updating; its guidance does not establish that a resolution or driver change causes this column-count behavior. Microsoft’s display-resolution and layout guidance.
Look for a repeatable trigger
Keep a brief record of when the switch happens and what immediately preceded it. Note your Windows edition, version, and build, and whether the change follows any of these events:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Launching or closing a game
- Connecting or disconnecting a monitor
- Waking the PC from sleep
- Signing in or restarting
- Installing a Windows or graphics-driver update
These are useful observations, not established causes. If the menu changes after an event, check Display settings before and after it rather than assuming the event is responsible.

What to try—and what not to assume
Restarting Windows Explorer
The reported user found that restarting explorer.exe brought back eight columns temporarily, but it did not prevent the layout from changing again. Treat this only as an anecdotal, temporary workaround, not a reliable or official fix. The report describes the result.
Start menu settings and column controls
Microsoft’s Start guidance says Windows 11 remembers the last-used view for Pinned and All. The reviewed guidance does not document a Windows 11 setting for locking the menu to six or eight columns. Its instructions for dragging Start’s edges to resize it and turning on full-screen Start apply to Windows 10, not Windows 11. Check the guidance for the Windows version actually installed rather than applying those Windows 10 steps to Windows 11. Microsoft’s Start menu customization guidance.

Managed Start layouts
Microsoft’s troubleshooting for Start layout configuration errors concerns managed layouts, such as malformed XML or unexpected layout values. It does not identify this six-to-eight-column change as a known issue. Unless your PC is managed or you have evidence that a Start layout policy is involved, those instructions are not a suitable first-line fix for a personal PC. Microsoft’s Start menu troubleshooting guidance.
What remains uncertain
The available sources do not confirm that a game, graphics-driver change, scaling threshold, Windows update, or particular Windows build causes the switching. They also do not establish this behavior as a widespread Windows 11 issue. A forum reply mentions Start size choices such as default, small, and large, but does not verify which builds have them or whether a size choice locks the column count. Do not rely on that control being available—or assume it will stop the switching—without documentation for your specific Windows build.
