Microsoft says it measures Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular connections. The main difference is convenience when you use the shortcut; readings can differ when you compare different test services, servers, or conditions.
What the Windows 11 speed-test option actually does
Microsoft says the option opens your default browser and measures Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular connections. You can reach it from Wi-Fi or Cellular Quick Settings, or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray. Microsoft’s release note does not identify the test provider.
Technology reporting describes the destination as a Bing-hosted, simplified Ookla Speedtest interface showing latency, download, and upload. That attribution comes from reporting, not Microsoft’s feature note. The shortcut is being gradually rolled out in Windows 11 Release Preview builds 26100.7918 and 26200.7918 for versions 24H2 and 25H2; a phased rollout means the option may not appear on every eligible PC.
When should results match—and when might they differ?
Using the shortcut and opening the same test yourself
If both routes open the same test service and server under comparable conditions, the taskbar shortcut itself is not a reason to expect a different measurement: it launches a browser test. The shortcut saves navigation steps; it does not establish that Windows is measuring the connection independently.

Comparing different test services
Speed tests do not all use the same servers or methods. FAST.com, for example, estimates speed using downloads from and uploads to Netflix servers. Its focus is download speed, but expanding the results exposes upload and latency, including unloaded and loaded latency. The difference between those latency readings can help indicate bufferbloat. FAST.com describes the result as a general-purpose estimate for individual users, not a tool for third-party service certification or enterprise use.
Test design matters too: the server location and load, number of connections, transfer sizes, and way results are combined can influence a reading. Netflix’s 2016 engineering explanation of FAST.com describes these design choices and notes that the local network, router, device, other users, and network configuration can also affect results. Those are useful principles, not a guarantee that every current test uses precisely the same implementation.

What published comparisons show
A 2023 peer-reviewed study compared Ookla Speedtest with Measurement Lab’s NDT7—not the Windows shortcut with manually opening the same test. In its controlled lab conditions, the tools reported similar speeds in most cases, while Ookla reported higher throughput under high latency. In a separate wide-area deployment involving 126 households, the authors collected more than 80,000 paired measurements over nine months. They also found that some Ookla servers reported speeds 10% lower than other Ookla servers. That was a study-specific finding, not a universal expected difference.
How to compare two speed-test results fairly
- Keep the setup consistent. Use the same device, connection type, location, and approximate time. A Wi-Fi result and an Ethernet result answer different questions.
- Note the service and server. Record which test you used and the selected server, if shown. Different routes and server loads can affect results.
- Repeat the test. A single run is a snapshot. Microsoft recommends taking several tests in different places around the home, recording the results, and testing again after network changes.
- Compare the same metrics. Check whether each result reports download, upload, unloaded latency, or loaded latency; labels and available diagnostics vary between services.
- Use Ethernet as an optional check. If both the PC and router have Ethernet ports, a wired run can help distinguish Wi-Fi problems from other parts of the internet connection. A cable is not needed to compare the taskbar shortcut with a manually opened browser test.
What to do if your Wi-Fi results vary by room
A speed-test result combines the Wi-Fi link with the rest of the route to the test server. If performance changes across rooms, signal strength, congestion, Wi-Fi band, and channel conditions may be contributing. Microsoft’s home Wi-Fi guidance discusses band range and throughput trade-offs, congestion, signal strength, and using analyzer apps to inspect channel conditions.

If results repeatedly fall short of the speed you pay for, FAST.com advises asking your internet service provider about the readings. Treat them as diagnostic snapshots rather than proof of performance on every app or service path; FAST.com does not position its test for enterprise certification.

Use the Windows shortcut when convenience is the priority and you want a quick browser-based check. Use another service when you want to see performance to that service’s network or compare its additional diagnostics. For troubleshooting, consistency matters more than choosing a supposedly definitive test: note the service, connection type, location, and time, then repeat under comparable conditions.
