If it cannot reach Windows, shows a boot error, or repeatedly opens Automatic Repair, use the recovery steps instead. These are different problems, and the right fix depends on which one you have.
First, tell a slow startup from a boot failure
Notice where the delay happens. If Windows reaches the sign-in screen, but the desktop is slow to respond afterward, begin with startup apps. If Windows will not reach sign-in, loops through recovery, or displays a boot error, skip to the recovery options.

Microsoft separates a PC that starts but has a problem from one that will not start. A slow sign-in or sluggish desktop calls for performance troubleshooting; a failure to start calls for recovery tools.

Disable only startup apps you recognize
Apps that launch when you sign in can slow boot time and continue using resources in the background. Windows 11 lets you review them in Settings or Task Manager.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or right-click Start and select Task Manager > Startup apps.
- In Task Manager, review each app’s startup impact. Microsoft’s categories are based on CPU and disk use: Low is less than 300 ms CPU and less than 292 KB disk use; Medium is more than 300 ms and less than 1 second CPU, or more than 292 KB and less than 3 MB disk use; High is more than 1 second CPU or more than 3 MB disk use.
- Turn off only apps you recognize and do not need when you sign in. Keep security, device, and work-management utilities enabled unless you know what they do and have a reason to change them. Do not disable unfamiliar Windows services or edit the registry as a speed fix.
- Restart the PC and check whether the delay changes. If it does not, restore any app you still need and continue to the next check.
Those impact labels are Task Manager classifications, not estimates of how many seconds you will save. Microsoft does not publish a universal boot-time improvement for disabling a particular app. See Microsoft’s startup-app guidance for the available controls.
Check updates, storage, and general performance
A slow startup may be one sign of a broader performance issue. Microsoft lists too many startup apps, limited storage, outdated software, and older hardware among possible contributors to a slow Windows device.
- Check for available Windows updates and install them if appropriate.
- Review free storage and remove applications you no longer use if you need to reclaim space.
- Consider whether the PC is slow in other tasks too. If it is, the issue may not be limited to boot.
Software changes may not make an older PC substantially faster. Microsoft notes that upgrading may be the better long-term option when hardware limits performance; diagnose the machine before assuming a specific component needs replacement. Its performance guidance covers these general checks.

Use a clean boot to find a third-party conflict
If startup-app changes do not explain the delay, a clean boot can help determine whether a non-Microsoft service or startup item is interfering. It is a diagnostic state, not a recommended permanent configuration. You need administrator access, and some functionality may be unavailable while the PC is in that state. Managed-device policies may also prevent these steps.
- Record which items you plan to change so you can restore them.
- Open System Configuration. On its Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services before disabling non-Microsoft services.
- Use Task Manager to disable startup items, then restart and check whether the issue remains.
- If the delay disappears, re-enable items in groups and restart between checks until you identify the app or service involved.
- Restore normal startup when testing is complete. Update, uninstall, or reconfigure the conflicting software as appropriate.
Do not disable Microsoft services as a generic optimization. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions to return the PC to normal startup afterward.
Run DISM and SFC when Windows files may be damaged
System file repair is relevant when Windows features malfunction, system errors appear, or the PC becomes unresponsive or freezes—not as a guaranteed fix for an otherwise normal but slow boot. Microsoft instructs users to run DISM before System File Checker because DISM can supply files needed to repair corrupted system files.

- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Then run
sfc /scannowand let the scan complete.
Use the exact order above. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the repair sequence.
If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is for startup problems and other recovery needs. If Windows is still usable, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup, or hold Shift while choosing Restart. WinRE may also appear automatically after repeated failed starts.
When Windows cannot start, try the least disruptive recovery option that fits the problem. Startup Repair is intended for certain failures that prevent Windows from starting, such as damaged system files or boot configuration errors. It is not a routine performance tweak.

- Startup Repair: Use for a PC that cannot start normally and has a startup-related problem.
- Startup Settings: Provides options such as Safe Mode, a limited Windows startup useful for diagnosis. Safe Mode is not the same as a clean boot or Startup Repair.
- System Restore or uninstall updates: Consider these when the problem began after a change or update and the relevant option is available.
- Reset or reinstall: Reserve these for situations where less disruptive recovery has not worked; the selected option determines what happens to personal files.
On Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, Quick Machine Recovery can check Windows Update for a fix when it is enabled and detects repeated boot failures associated with known widespread issues. It does not address every startup failure. Microsoft’s recovery guide describes the available choices and their consequences.
Protect files before reset or reinstall
Back up important files if possible before choosing a recovery option that may change or remove data. If the device is encrypted, WinRE may ask for the BitLocker recovery key, so locate it before proceeding. Reset can keep or remove personal files depending on the option selected; reinstalling from installation media can remove everything.
If built-in recovery is unavailable and the PC will not start, Microsoft describes creating Windows installation media on another working PC, booting the affected PC from that media, and choosing Repair my PC to open WinRE. A USB flash drive is useful for this recovery task, but it is not needed for the startup-app, clean-boot, or system-file checks above. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment instructions.
