No: Microsoft’s announcement does not say the Windows 11 Search overhaul will change your preferences automatically. It describes a new control that lets you choose whether web and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results. The announced changes also include clearer result labels, improved matching and fewer promotional items in web results, but they were initially rolling out gradually to Windows Insiders—not all Windows 11 users.
What changes in Windows 11 Search?
On July 13, 2026, Microsoft announced a set of Windows Search refinements designed to make results easier to scan and improve the odds of finding a local app, setting or file. The announcement describes intended feature behavior; it does not provide independent performance measurements or a quantified speed improvement. Microsoft’s Jeff Petty (Windows) and Anderson Aiziro (Bing Search), who co-authored the post, wrote: “You’ve been asking for search that is faster, more relevant, and easier to use—whether you’re opening an app, finding a file, or changing a setting.” Microsoft’s Windows Insider announcement outlines the changes.

Cleaner results and clearer labels
The Search home is being simplified to reduce clutter and make recent searches easier to revisit. Results will be more clearly identified as apps, settings, files, web results or Microsoft Store suggestions, so you can tell what you are about to open.

Microsoft also says promotional content will be removed from web results, with the most relevant answer shown instead of related products and promotions appearing first. That is a description of the announced experience, not a promise that every kind of web result will disappear.

Local results get more attention
When a local app, setting or file is a stronger match, Search is intended to prioritize it over web or Store suggestions. Microsoft says system locations such as This PC and Recycle Bin should also be easier to find.
App matching is meant to be more forgiving of typos, missing or extra letters, and partial names. Microsoft’s example is typing “utlook” and finding Outlook. The announcement also describes improved local-file matching, including searches as short as two characters and cloud or connected files when those are the better match.

Settings and reliability refinements
Microsoft says it has made a first round of ranking improvements for Settings results, with more tuning planned. It also lists reliability work intended to reduce crashes and loading problems. The post does not quantify those changes or establish how much faster Search will feel on a particular PC.
How to control web and Store suggestions
The new preference is at Settings > Privacy & Security > Search. It lets you choose whether web and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results. Microsoft describes a choice for the user; its announcement does not say Windows will automatically alter that preference.

This suggestion setting is separate from Windows Search indexing. Indexing catalogs file names, paths, content and metadata to help Windows locate items. You can manage which locations are indexed and, for file types, whether Windows indexes properties alone or properties plus content. Enhanced indexing covers the whole PC and may use more system resources. See Microsoft Support’s explanation of Search indexing for those controls.

Microsoft initially said the Search Box changes were gradually rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel through Controlled Feature Rollout, and that not every Insider would see them immediately. Microsoft also cautioned that experiences can vary by region. That announcement does not confirm universal availability on Windows 11 PCs.

Windows Central reported on July 13, 2026, that broader availability was expected later in 2026. That was a reported expectation, not a Microsoft guarantee or a confirmed release date. Check for the setting on your own device rather than assuming it has arrived.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H2 documentation describes related Search capabilities, including previewing results without opening them, app searches that handle typos and partial names, clearer result labels, and automatic indexing of frequently used folders with a control in Settings > Privacy & security > Search. That documentation does not establish that every improvement or the web-and-Store suggestion preference announced in July is available on every Windows 11 device.
