Try the reversible checks below before changing services or using recovery. These six steps are a practical sequence, not a Microsoft-published universal checklist; an indexing fix, for example, won’t necessarily resolve a search interface that will not respond.
1. Restart Windows and try Search again
Restart your PC, then open Search from the taskbar and test the same query again. This is a simple first check that may clear a temporary glitch, but Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not identify restarting as a guaranteed fix for taskbar Search.

2. Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
If Search opens but results are missing or incomplete, run Microsoft’s diagnostic wizard. Microsoft documents this route in its guidance for locating files after a Windows upgrade:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Search.
- Select Advanced indexing options.
- In the Indexing Options window, select Advanced.
- Under Troubleshooting, select Troubleshoot search and indexing, then follow the wizard’s prompts. Microsoft’s instructions describe this diagnostic in the context of files that can’t be found after upgrading; available troubleshooters can vary.
3. Check which folders Windows indexes
Windows Search uses an index to find indexed terms and file properties quickly, and can include file contents where supported. If the search box works but files from particular folders never appear, check the search scope before treating the whole feature as broken.

- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Search.
- Under Find my files, review the selected mode and whether the folders you need are included. You can add locations when needed.
| Mode | Default coverage | Resource trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | Common folders: Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop. | Indexes a narrower scope. |
| Enhanced | User folders and files more broadly. | Can use more system resources. |
Microsoft describes these modes and their scope in Search indexing in Windows. Enhanced coverage may help when needed files sit outside the common folders, but it is not a necessary choice for every PC.
4. Give indexing time to finish
If you changed the indexed locations or started a rebuild, wait for indexing to complete before judging the results. Microsoft Support says, “When you first run indexing, it can take up to a couple hours to complete.” The duration is an upper estimate for initial indexing, not a guarantee that every change takes that long. See Microsoft’s indexing guidance.

5. Check the Windows Search service only when relevant
Consider the service if Search appears unavailable alongside other symptoms, or if you are specifically troubleshooting Outlook search. Microsoft’s service-status advice applies to its Outlook search scenario: it says Windows Search should be running there, and a Disabled setting prevents it from running. That guidance does not establish changing the service as a general fix for a Windows 11 taskbar search box that will not open.
Do not change service settings casually. Microsoft’s service guidance is scoped to Outlook; if Outlook is your only affected app, follow that context rather than assuming the same remedy applies to every search symptom.

6. Consider app repair or Windows recovery only as a last resort
Use repair or recovery only if the lighter checks have not helped and the problem appears broader than missing indexed files. These options are conditional: Windows does not offer repair or reset for every app, and the Search interface may not appear among apps with advanced options.
Check whether Windows offers app repair
For a supported app, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, then Advanced options. If available, try Repair first; Reset is a separate option and may remove the app’s data or settings. Microsoft explains that available options vary by app in its repair and reset guidance.

Review Windows recovery choices before proceeding
If the issue is part of a wider Windows problem, review Microsoft’s recovery options and start with the least disruptive choice that fits your situation. Some recovery options can result in data loss, so read the option’s effects and back up important files before continuing.

Quick Recap
Choose the fix that matches the symptom
- Search box is blank, stuck, or won’t open: restart, then check whether other parts of Windows are affected. Index scope changes address missing results, not necessarily an unresponsive interface.
- Search opens but misses files in certain folders: check Classic versus Enhanced coverage and add the relevant location.
- You recently changed indexing: allow time for indexing to finish before testing again.
- Outlook search is also affected: consult Microsoft’s Outlook-specific service guidance rather than treating it as a universal taskbar fix.
- Several Windows features are failing: consider recovery only after the simpler steps, and account for possible data loss.
