To let a compatible Windows 11 device rotate its screen automatically, turn Rotation lock off in Settings > System > Display. You may also be able to switch it off from Quick Settings. If the control is greyed out, first put a convertible PC into tablet form.
Turn off Rotation lock in Display settings
-
Open Settings > System > Display.
-
Under Scale & layout, find Rotation lock.
-
Switch Rotation lock to Off. On a compatible device, the screen can then rotate automatically as you change the device’s orientation.

The setting’s exact placement or availability can vary by device and Windows build. Microsoft Q&A and a third-party Windows guide also describe the Display settings route and the Rotation lock control: Microsoft Q&A and Windows Central.
Use Quick Settings as an alternative
Open Quick Settings from the taskbar and look for Rotation lock. If the tile is available, switch it off. Quick Settings may not expose the control on every device or Windows build; use Display settings if you do not see it. The available routes and toggle behavior are also described in the cited Windows Central guide.

What Rotation lock does
- Off: permits automatic screen rotation when the device’s orientation changes, if the hardware and Windows configuration support it.
- On: prevents the display from changing orientation automatically.
Rotation lock is about the display’s orientation, not the Windows lock screen. The lock-screen setting for a picture that reacts to PC movement is separate: open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. See Microsoft Support’s lock-screen personalization guidance.
If Rotation lock is greyed out
On some convertible PCs, the control is unavailable while the device is in traditional laptop form. If your model supports it, fold or detach the keyboard to put the PC into tablet form, then check Rotation lock again. This is a common explanation, not a guarantee for every model; device-specific behavior can differ.
Windows 11 does not provide the old manual tablet-mode switch. Microsoft Support explains that Windows changes tablet mode automatically when it detects a tablet form or a detached keyboard, and switches back when a keyboard is attached or the device returns to laptop form: Microsoft Support: tablet mode in Windows. If Rotation lock stays unavailable in tablet form, the cause may depend on the device; these sources do not establish one universal sensor, driver, or firmware fix. Avoid registry changes unless you have authoritative instructions for your specific model.
