Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf you upgraded to a new Windows version and want to return, Windows 11’s Go back option is usually available for 10 days after the upgrade. It keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed since upgrading and reverses changes to Settings. If the problem began after a smaller, recent update, use Uninstall an update instead: it targets that update rather than reverting the Windows version.
Which rollback option should you use?
| Option | What it targets | Personal files | Apps and settings | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Go back | The previous Windows version after a version upgrade | Kept | Apps and drivers installed after the upgrade, and changes made to Settings, are removed | Available for a limited time—10 days in most cases—and depends on required rollback files being present. Microsoft Support |
| Uninstall an update | A selected recent Windows update | Kept | Apps and settings are kept; changes from the selected update are removed | Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Microsoft Support |
| Reset this PC | Reinstalls Windows | Depends on the reset option selected | Apps and settings are removed | More disruptive than removing an update or going back; Microsoft recommends trying other recovery options first. Microsoft Support |
When is Go back available?
Microsoft says that in most cases you have 10 days after upgrading to return to the previous Windows version. The window is limited and is not guaranteed to be the same on every device. The option also depends on the required rollback files still being present.

Microsoft lists keeping the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders among the prerequisites. It also says to remove user accounts added after the upgrade and, if you used a USB drive to upgrade, have that original USB drive available. See Microsoft’s Go back to the previous version of Windows instructions.

Why might Go back be missing?
The 10-day period may have passed, or the previous installation’s rollback files may have been deleted. Microsoft says deleting the previous Windows installation removes the Go back option. Its support guidance does not enumerate every reason the option might be unavailable, so a missing control alone does not identify the cause.

What happens to your files, apps, and settings?
Your personal files are kept when you use Go back, but apps and drivers installed after the upgrade are removed, along with changes you made to Settings. Apps changed or updated since the upgrade might not be available or work properly after you return. Microsoft’s exact summary is: “This will keep your personal files, but it’ll remove apps and drivers installed after the upgrade, as well as any changes you made to Settings.”
Uninstalling a recent update has a different scope: it keeps personal files, apps, and settings, while removing changes associated with the selected update. Reset this PC is a separate, more disruptive reinstall; what happens to files depends on the reset option you choose.

How to choose the right recovery path
- The problem started after upgrading to a new Windows version: Open Settings > System > Recovery and look for Go back. Use it only if it is available and you accept losing post-upgrade apps, drivers, and Settings changes.
- The problem started after a recent update: Choose Uninstall an update in Windows recovery options. This removes a selected update rather than returning the whole system to its previous Windows version; some updates cannot be removed.
- Windows will not start: Microsoft lists uninstalling updates among the recovery options available through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). For most WinRE recovery options on an encrypted device, you will need its BitLocker recovery key.
Microsoft describes these choices in its guide to recovery options in Windows.
What to do before rolling back
- Back up important files. Microsoft recommends backing up before recovery. A separate backup gives you another copy if something goes wrong; an external drive is one option, but buying one is not required for Go back.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if the device is encrypted. Microsoft says the key is needed for most WinRE recovery options.
- Check for Go back before deleting installation files. Keeping
windows.oldand$windows.~btis part of Microsoft’s listed prerequisites.
Microsoft’s recovery guidance covers backing up and the BitLocker key; its instructions for going back list the rollback-folder prerequisites.

What happens after 10 days—or if you delete Windows.old?
Windows automatically deletes the previous installation after 10 days. You can also delete it earlier to free space, but removing the previous installation deletes Windows.old and cannot be undone; Go back is then lost. Microsoft explains this in Delete your previous version of Windows.
Does this mean you can return from Windows 11 to Windows 10?
Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ says a device upgraded from Windows 10 can move back within 10 days while retaining files and data migrated to Windows 11. However, Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Returning to Windows 10 is therefore not a return to a currently supported Windows release. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ.
