You may not need a new Windows 11 Pro key to reinstall Windows or recover activation after a hardware change. First check the installed edition and activation status at Settings > System > Activation, then use the method that matches how you obtained your license: a 25-character product key or a digital license.
Product key or digital license: which one do you have?
A product key is a 25-character code. A digital license activates Windows without requiring you to enter a key. The method depends on the purchase channel: for example, a Pro upgrade bought through the Microsoft Store app uses a digital license, while boxed retail, preinstalled, and some volume-license copies may use a key. See Microsoft’s Windows activation guidance and product-key lookup advice.

To check your current setup, open Settings > System > Activation. The page shows both the installed edition, such as Home or Pro, and whether Windows is activated. A Pro license will not activate an installed Home edition as Pro; the installed edition must match the license.

Look in the place associated with the way Windows was purchased. Microsoft records keys for purchases made through its online store; for a purchase from another retailer, check with that seller.

- Digital retailer purchase: Check the confirmation email or the retailer’s digital locker.
- Volume Licensing or MSDN: Use the relevant program’s web portal.

How to activate Windows 11 Pro
- Open Settings > System > Activation and note the installed edition and activation status.
- If you have a product key, choose Change product key on the Activation page and enter the valid key.
- If you have a digital license, connect to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with that license.
- Check the Activation page again to confirm the result. Microsoft requires either a digital license or a product key to activate Windows; see Activate Windows.
Can you reinstall Windows 11 without entering a key?
Usually, yes, if that same edition was already activated on the device with a digital license. Reinstall the licensed edition, connect to the internet after installation, and Windows can reactivate automatically. During setup, the key prompt may also be skipped if Setup detects a key stored in the device firmware. Follow Microsoft’s installation-media reinstall guidance.
- Before reinstalling, check Settings > System > Activation and record whether the device has Home or Pro and whether it is activated.
- Install the same edition that is licensed for the device. If Setup asks for a key and you have a digital license, choose the option to continue without one.
- Once Windows is installed, connect to the internet and check Settings > System > Activation.
If a Pro digital license exists but Home is installed, use Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter to upgrade Home to Pro. If the only digital license is for Home but Pro is installed, Microsoft directs users to reinstall Home. A generic Home key does not activate Pro. See Using the Windows Activation troubleshooter.

How to reactivate after replacing a motherboard
A motherboard replacement is an example of a significant hardware change that can break the device match associated with Windows activation. Before the change, confirm activation, note whether the edition is Home or Pro, and link the digital license to your Microsoft account. Afterward, connect to the internet and sign in to that account.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license, select the device you are using now, and follow the prompts.
If the license was activated with a product key, you may need to enter that same key again. Microsoft’s step-by-step instructions are in Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.

Can you transfer a Windows 11 Pro license to another PC?
Reactiving on the same device after a hardware change is not the same question as transferring a license to a different PC. Microsoft’s consumer activation guidance describes hardware-change reactivation and says one copy cannot be used on more devices than the applicable license terms allow. It does not provide a complete channel-by-channel transfer-rights guide for every license type. Check the terms that came with your license or contact Microsoft Support if you need a definitive answer about a specific transfer; do not assume that linking a Microsoft account makes every license transferable. See Why can’t I activate Windows?.
Common reasons activation fails
- Edition mismatch: The installed Home or Pro edition may not match the license. Check Activation settings and use the appropriate troubleshooter or reinstall the licensed edition.
- Hardware changed: A major component change can disrupt the activation match; try the Activation troubleshooter while signed in to the linked Microsoft account.
- Key used on too many PCs: A key may be blocked if Windows is installed on more devices than its license terms permit.
- Used or refurbished PC: A previous owner may have reused a key elsewhere. Contact the seller if the license supplied with the device does not activate.
- Counterfeit software: Activation cannot make counterfeit software genuine.
Activation and validation are distinct. Microsoft describes activation as pairing a key or digital entitlement with device hardware; validation checks that critical licensing files have not been damaged, deleted, or removed. Successful activation alone is not proof that a copy is genuine. More troubleshooting guidance is available from Microsoft in Why can’t I activate Windows?.
