To make a Windows 11 PC feel faster, first find what is slowing it down: check Task Manager for CPU, memory, and disk use, then make targeted changes to startup apps, storage, power, or visual effects. No single setting fixes every slowdown, and older hardware may limit the gains.
Start by identifying what feels slow
Match the change to the symptom. A slow startup points toward apps that launch with Windows; low free space calls for a storage check; sluggishness limited to one app calls for checking that app’s resource use. For general slowdowns, inspect the system before closing processes or changing settings.

Check Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, review CPU, memory, and disk use. Note which apps or processes are consuming resources while the slowdown occurs.
- Open Performance to see whether CPU, memory, or disk activity is persistently high.
- Open Startup apps to review what launches when you sign in.
High resource use is a clue, not proof that a process is safe to end. Avoid stopping unfamiliar Windows processes. Microsoft recommends using Task Manager to review activity and startup apps as part of troubleshooting (Microsoft Support: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows; Microsoft Support: System configuration tools in Windows).
Install updates and check for unwanted activity
Outdated software can contribute to poor performance. Check Windows Update for available updates; if a driver update is offered under optional updates and appears relevant to your device, review it before installing. Update availability and labels can vary by Windows build and device.

If you notice unexplained resource use or other signs of unwanted activity, run a scan with Windows Security. A scan is a troubleshooting step for those symptoms, not a routine performance tweak.
Reduce startup and background activity selectively
Disable unnecessary startup apps
Use Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager > Startup apps. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need immediately after signing in. Some apps may need to be managed in File Explorer, depending on how they were installed. Keep startup items you rely on for expected functions such as syncing or device features.
Review background permissions
For supported apps, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, and look for its background permissions. Restrict background activity only when you are comfortable losing its background updates, syncing, or notifications. These controls are not available for every app, and labels can vary by build.

Microsoft documents startup controls and supported background-app permissions in its guidance on configuring startup applications and Windows background apps.
Free storage without deleting files you want
Low storage can affect performance. Open Settings > System > Storage to see what is using space. You can review cleanup recommendations or enable Storage Sense, but inspect what will be removed before confirming a cleanup.
Storage Sense works on the system drive. By default, it does not manage files in Downloads or cloud content unless you configure it to do so. If you change those options, check the selected cleanup rules and timing so files you intend to keep are not removed. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance for the available controls.

Choose power and visual settings to suit your use
Power mode: performance or battery life
On supported devices, open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose a power mode. Best performance prioritizes performance but uses more power; Microsoft warns that on laptops it can shorten battery life and make the device warmer. A more balanced mode is often a better fit for everyday use away from a charger. Available choices can depend on the device. See Microsoft’s power mode instructions.

If you are willing to reduce animation or other visual polish, adjust Windows visual effects. This is an optional trade-off, not a guaranteed fix for a specific bottleneck. Change appearance settings only if you prefer the simpler look; prioritize diagnosing persistent CPU, memory, disk, or storage constraints first.

Windows generally optimizes drives automatically. Its drive optimization uses defragmentation for hard disk drives (HDDs) and trimming for solid-state drives (SSDs); these are different operations, so do not manually defragment an SSD as a blanket performance tip. To check a drive, search Windows for Defragment and Optimize Drives and review its status. Microsoft explains the distinction in its drive optimization guidance.

If the PC is still slow
Restart after making changes, then check whether the original symptom has improved and whether the same resource remains heavily used. If it has not, revisit the symptom and investigate that bottleneck rather than disabling more processes at random.
Settings changes cannot overcome every hardware limitation. Microsoft Support notes that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps, and that upgrading the device may be the best long-term solution. Whether an upgrade is appropriate depends on the specific PC and the cause of the slowdown; diagnose the device before choosing hardware.
