What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your Windows 11 computer will not wake from sleep, press its power button first; on some models, a keyboard key, mouse click, or opening the laptop lid works instead. If the PC seems active but the screen is black, try the graphics-reset shortcut Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Then isolate any connected device that is failing, and use Windows power diagnostics if the problem keeps returning.
1. Try the wake control your PC supports
Press the PC’s power button. Microsoft says this resumes most PCs, but wake behavior varies: some computers also respond to a keyboard key, mouse click, or opening a laptop lid. Try the input that makes sense for your device. If none works, consult the computer maker’s documentation for that model rather than assuming every PC wakes the same way. Microsoft’s sleep and wake guidance describes these options.

2. If the PC seems on, check for a blank-screen problem
Lights, fans, or other signs of activity alongside a black display may point to a display or graphics issue; a blank screen alone does not establish that the whole PC failed to resume. Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. Microsoft lists this shortcut for waking a PC from a blank or black screen. It is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for every sleep-resume failure. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut list.
If the computer remains unresponsive and you must force it off, Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance describes holding the power button for 10 seconds. Treat this as a last resort: it interrupts the current session and may cause unsaved work to be lost. Read Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance.

3. Isolate a device that misbehaves after resume
If the computer wakes but a monitor, printer, scanner, or another connected device does not work, disconnect and reconnect that device, or restart the PC. Check whether the device’s drivers are current. These steps address a peripheral that fails after resume; they do not establish that the peripheral needs replacing. Microsoft provides general advice on devices that do not work after waking.
4. Investigate recurring wake problems with powercfg
Windows includes command-line diagnostics that can help identify wake behavior and supported sleep states. Open Terminal or Command Prompt and run the relevant command; these commands report information rather than automatically repairing the cause.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Review sleep timing and device-specific settings
To check when Windows is set to enter sleep, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. These controls set timeouts; changing them is not a documented universal fix for a computer that will not resume. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power-settings guidance.

Wake options may depend on the PC’s hardware, manufacturer configuration, and connected accessories. For a dock, USB device, sensor, or firmware setting, follow the maker’s instructions for the exact model. For example, Microsoft notes that USB Wake Support in BIOS may be required for USB-connected presence sensors on supported S3 systems; this does not mean every PC has that option or needs it. Presence-sensing settings may also vary by device and organizational configuration. Microsoft explains the availability of presence-sensing settings.
