Windows 11 can clear the contents of pagefile.sys when it shuts down, but the documented setting does not delete the file. The policy is called Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile. It is intended to reduce exposure of information written to the paging file, not to reclaim disk space, and clearing can make shutdown take longer.
What the shutdown setting actually does
Microsoft’s Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile policy controls whether Windows clears the virtual-memory paging file when the device shuts down. In Microsoft’s words, “This policy setting determines whether the virtual memory paging file is cleared when the device is shut down.” Windows 11 is listed as an applicable operating system.

Clearing and deleting are different: the policy concerns the file’s contents, not removing pagefile.sys. Microsoft’s documentation does not say that enabling it deletes the file or frees the disk space occupied by it. Turning this policy off is likewise not the same as disabling or resizing the paging file.
How to check or change the clear-at-shutdown value
Microsoft documents the registry value ClearPageFileAtShutdown here:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management
Microsoft’s shutdown troubleshooting guidance defines 0 as disabled and 1 as enabled. Those values change whether Windows clears the paging file at shutdown; they do not remove or resize the file. Because editing the registry incorrectly can cause problems, do not change unrelated values, and make sure you are changing the intended policy.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
On a work- or school-managed PC, an organization’s security policy or device-management configuration may control the effective setting. Microsoft documents a management route in its LocalPoliciesSecurityOptions Policy CSP. A local registry value may therefore not be the final word on a managed device.

Should you enable it?
| Choice | Security effect | Shutdown-time consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Enabled | Uses the shutdown-clearing countermeasure intended to reduce the risk of offline inspection of paging-file contents. | Windows must clear the paging-file contents, which can extend shutdown. |
| Disabled | Does not use this particular shutdown-clearing countermeasure. | Avoids the delay associated with clearing the paging file at shutdown. |
The choice depends on whether this protection against offline inspection matters for your device and whether the added shutdown time is acceptable. It is not complete protection: Microsoft notes that a person with physical access can bypass the measure by removing power from the device.

How much longer can shutdown take?
Microsoft says the time required to clear the paging file depends on its size and the disk hardware. Its published example says the added time can exceed 30 minutes on a device with 2 GB of RAM and a 2-GB paging file. That is a specific illustration, not a typical or guaranteed Windows 11 shutdown time. See Microsoft’s explanation of why Windows shuts down slowly when this policy is enabled and the policy page’s timing example.

Do not enable Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile for that purpose: it clears contents and does not document a way to delete pagefile.sys or reclaim the file’s space. Disabling or resizing the paging file is a separate configuration task, and the cited Microsoft guidance does not provide a complete current Windows 11 procedure for it. The supported conclusion here is limited to the shutdown-clearing policy and its effect.
