Windows 11 on an Unsupported PC: Check, Fix, or Choose Another Path

Before trying to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, check the exact failed requirement. Microsoft does not recommend bypassing eligibility checks and warns that support and updates are not guaranteed.

You can sometimes make a Windows 11 installation run on a PC that fails Microsoft’s requirements, but Microsoft does not recommend installing it on unsupported hardware. Compatibility issues may occur, updates—including security updates—are not guaranteed, and Microsoft support is unavailable. Start by checking exactly why the PC is ineligible: a disabled firmware setting may be fixable, while an unsupported processor is a hardware limit.

Can you install Windows 11 on an unsupported PC?

Microsoft’s official installation routes do not establish a supported way to bypass the hardware requirements. The company says, “Installing Windows 11 on a device that doesn’t meet Windows 11 minimum system requirements isn’t recommended.” Unsupported devices may experience compatibility problems, are not guaranteed updates, and will not receive Microsoft support. Compatibility-related damage may also fall outside the device manufacturer’s warranty. Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance explains these risks.

This guide therefore starts with eligibility checks and legitimate fixes—not a bypass recipe. Windows installation media is an official installation tool, not evidence that the PC meets requirements or that Microsoft supports bypassing them.

Step 1: Find out why the PC is ineligible

Run Microsoft PC Health Check or check eligibility in Windows Update. Record the specific failed requirement rather than treating “unsupported” as one single problem. Microsoft’s upgrade eligibility guidance covers these checks.

  • At least 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage.
  • UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, plus TPM 2.0.
  • DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • A display larger than 9 inches diagonally, with at least 720p resolution.

Windows 11 Home also requires an internet connection and a Microsoft Account during first-use setup. See Microsoft’s full Windows 11 requirements for details.

Step 2: Check whether the failed requirement can be fixed

TPM or Secure Boot is not detected

A “TPM not found” result does not by itself prove that the PC lacks TPM 2.0; a relevant firmware option may be disabled or need checking. Consult the PC manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and confirm its firmware options before changing settings. Microsoft’s requirements page links to TPM and Secure Boot information.

Memory or storage is below the minimum

RAM or storage may be upgradeable on some computers, but upgrade options depend on the model. Check the manufacturer’s specifications before buying parts or opening a device.

The processor is unsupported

Processor compatibility is a model-level requirement. Microsoft notes that processor clock speed and core count are inherent to the processor and are not considered upgradeable. A faster setting or installation USB cannot turn an unsupported CPU into a supported one.

Step 3: Back up before changing firmware or installing

Back up important files before making firmware changes or attempting an operating-system installation. Microsoft recommends backing up when preparing to transition to Windows 11. A clean install started by booting from installation media erases the existing drive, including files and apps, so verify that the backup is complete and accessible before proceeding.

Microsoft’s transition guidance discusses backing up, and its installation-media instructions explain how to create a USB installer. The USB carries the installer; it does not make unsupported hardware eligible.

Step 4: If the PC is eligible, install Windows 11 through an official route

  1. Use Windows Update when the upgrade is offered. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10 and check for updates. If Windows Update offers Windows 11, follow its prompts.
  2. Use the Installation Assistant if appropriate. Microsoft documents this option for a device it finds meets Windows 11 requirements. Follow the current instructions on Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation options page.
  3. Use installation media for an upgrade or clean install. Microsoft documents running Setup from within Windows for an upgrade, or booting from the media for a clean install. A booted clean install wipes the drive, so do not continue until you have verified your backup.

These are supported installation routes for eligible devices; Microsoft’s documentation does not describe them as an exception to the hardware requirements.

Step 5: Decide what to do if the PC still fails a requirement

If the PC remains ineligible, Microsoft recommends against proceeding with Windows 11 on it. The practical choices are to keep using the current system with an appropriate security plan, or move to a device that supports Windows 11. Microsoft recommends replacing a device that cannot meet the requirements with a compatible PC; verify eligibility for the specific model rather than relying on a general product description.

If you already installed Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, Microsoft recommends rolling back to the previous Windows version. After an upgrade, the Go back recovery option is available for 10 days; then the files needed for recovery are removed. Microsoft says the unsupported-install warning may appear in Settings and a watermark may be displayed on the desktop. See the unsupported-device recovery instructions.

What Windows 10 support ending means

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The PC continues to function, but ordinary support no longer provides regular software and security updates. Microsoft offers consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for enrolled devices, providing critical and important security updates for at least one year after end of support. ESU is a temporary security-update bridge, not a way to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. Microsoft’s transition guidance explains the options.

For Windows 10 version 22H2 enrollment scenarios, Microsoft’s ESU Licensing Preparation Package article, originally published September 8, 2026, describes a prerequisite package. Installing that package alone does not enroll a PC or provide ESU.

Path Support and updates Main risk or trade-off
Fix a setting or upgrade a component, then recheck eligibility If the PC meets all requirements, use an official Windows 11 installation route. Whether a setting or component can be changed depends on the PC model; back up before firmware changes or installation.
Install Windows 11 while the PC remains unsupported Microsoft support is unavailable and updates are not guaranteed. Compatibility problems may occur; Microsoft does not recommend this path.
Keep Windows 10 with consumer ESU Enrolled devices can receive critical and important security updates for at least one year after October 14, 2025. ESU is limited and temporary, and requires enrollment; it does not make the PC Windows 11-compatible.
Move to a Windows 11-compatible PC Choose a device that meets Windows 11 requirements and is supported by its manufacturer. Requires a replacement; check the exact model’s eligibility and support.
