Then check the Windows discovery services. A missing Network-list entry does not necessarily mean a shared folder is unreachable: test its direct network path separately.
1. Confirm the PCs are on the same network and check their profiles
On each computer, first confirm that it is connected to the same local network as the others. Then, on a trusted home or workplace network, open Settings > Network & internet, select the Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection, and check Network profile type.

Set the profile to Private only when you trust the people and devices on that network. Windows 11 uses Public by default for new connections. Microsoft says a Public profile hides your PC from other devices, while a Private profile allows discoverability and file and printer sharing. For most networks, Microsoft recommends Public.

2. Enable Network discovery and file sharing
On each PC that should be discoverable or share files, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings. You can also search Settings for “manage advanced sharing settings.” Under Private networks, turn on both Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
Microsoft’s file-sharing instructions also describe turning off password-protected sharing under All Networks. Treat this as an optional, security-sensitive change, not a routine discovery fix: disabling it reduces access controls. Leave it on unless you understand the security trade-off and have a specific reason to change it.

3. Check the Windows discovery services
Windows uses several services relevant to discovering computers on a network. To inspect them:
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host.
- For each service that is not running, start it and set Startup type to Automatic.
These are the services Microsoft names in its file-sharing troubleshooting instructions.

4. Test access to a computer or share directly
The Network list and access to a particular shared folder are separate checks. In File Explorer’s address bar, enter a known path such as ComputerName or ComputerName\ShareName. Replace the example names with the computer and share names on your network.
- If the path opens: the share is reachable even if the computer is absent from Network.
- If it does not open: check that the target computer is powered on and that your account has permission to access the share.
You can also map a known share using This PC > More > Map network drive. Microsoft’s guide covers network sharing and access checks at File sharing over a network in Windows.

5. Update Windows, then consider Network reset as a last resort
Microsoft recommends keeping the involved PCs updated. If the checks above do not resolve the problem, Network reset is available at Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Use it only after less disruptive steps fail.

Microsoft: Fix network connection issues in Windows
How to narrow down the cause
Use the results of the checks to distinguish a visibility setting from a broader connection or permissions issue:
- Only one computer is missing: check that PC’s network connection, profile, discovery and sharing settings, and services.
- The computer is missing, but its UNC path works: the specific share is accessible; the remaining issue is its appearance in Network.
- The UNC path also fails: confirm the target is on and check the share name and account permissions.
- Several computers are missing: verify that they are on the same local network and check the discovery and sharing settings on the relevant PCs.
The precise cause depends on the network and the computers’ configuration. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one universal cause for intermittent Network-list visibility.
