Windows 11 Microphone Setup: Connect, Test, and Fix Input Problems

Set up a Windows 11 microphone in Sound settings, verify it with the built-in test, grant app permissions, and work through common input problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To set up a microphone in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound > Input, select the microphone, and use its built-in test to check that Windows can hear you. If it works in the test but not in a particular app, check that app’s microphone permissions separately.

Connect the microphone and select it in Sound settings

Connect a wired microphone or headset to the PC, or use the PC’s built-in microphone. For a Bluetooth microphone, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, find Input, select Add device, and follow the on-screen prompts. When connected, the microphone should appear under Input. See Microsoft’s microphone setup instructions.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Input, select the microphone you want to use. If more than one device is listed, choose the one you intend to speak into.
  3. Select the microphone’s chevron or properties control to open its settings.

A microphone can be connected to Windows without being the selected input. If an app is not hearing you, confirm that the right device is selected before changing other settings.

Test the microphone and adjust its input level

  1. On the selected microphone’s properties page, find Input settings and select Start test.
  2. Speak at your normal volume, then select Stop test.
  3. Select Play to listen to the sample. If it is too quiet, raise the Input volume slider and test again.

This checks whether Windows receives sound from the chosen device. If you hear the sample, but a particular app still gets no audio, check the app’s permission settings next.

Allow Windows apps to use the microphone

Device selection and privacy access are separate settings: Windows can detect a microphone while preventing an app from using it. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, then check these controls:

  • Turn on Microphone access.
  • Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  • If the intended Microsoft Store app has its own toggle, turn it on.
  • For traditional desktop software, turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop programs may not appear as individual toggles.

Microsoft explains these controls in its guide to microphone app permissions. While an app is using the microphone, Windows displays a microphone icon in the notification area. If you are using a website for a call or recording, the browser may also ask for permission for that specific site; Microsoft documents this for Edge in its camera, microphone, and privacy guidance.

Fix common microphone setup problems

No microphone appears under Input

  • Check the physical connection. For Bluetooth, confirm the microphone is paired and connected.
  • Return to Settings > System > Sound > Input and check the device list again.
  • Run the Input devices troubleshooter: Settings > System > Sound > Advanced > Troubleshoot common sound problems, then choose the input-device option.
  • If those checks do not help, Microsoft lists updating the audio driver as another troubleshooting step.

See Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide for additional steps.

Other people cannot hear you

Check the microphone’s hardware mute switch or button, make sure it is connected, and verify that it is selected under Sound > Input. Then check that microphone access and the intended app’s permission are enabled. A device being present in Windows does not by itself mean it is the active input or that an app can use it.

The recording is too quiet

Open the selected microphone’s properties, run the test, and increase Input volume if playback is too low. Listen to the new sample before returning to the app.

The Windows test records no signal

If the microphone is selected and connected but the test still captures no sound, audio enhancements or sound effects may be interfering. Microsoft recommends checking Additional device properties and disabling audio enhancements if that control is available. The location and availability of the setting depend on the device manufacturer. Then run the test again. See Microsoft’s audio enhancement instructions.
