To allow a traditional desktop app to use your microphone in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone. Windows does not offer a separate toggle for each traditional desktop app on this page; the desktop-app switch is shared.
Enable microphone access in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. See Microsoft’s microphone permission instructions.
- Turn on Microphone access. This is the device-level permission.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Find Let desktop apps access your microphone and turn it on.
The first two switches allow microphone use at the device and app-access levels. The final switch applies to traditional desktop apps such as Zoom or Teams.

Can you allow one desktop app and block another?
No—not with individual Windows toggles on this privacy page. Microsoft says desktop apps do not appear in the per-app lists, and its overview of Windows privacy settings explains that desktop apps may instead offer their own controls. The Windows setting Let desktop apps access your microphone is shared, so it cannot grant access to one traditional desktop app while denying another there. It can also affect Windows features that use the microphone, including dictation or Cortana.

Store apps have individual controls
If the app is a Microsoft Store app and appears under Choose which apps can access your microphone, use its individual toggle. That list is distinct from the shared desktop-app control. A traditional desktop app may be absent simply because it is not a Store app; its absence does not by itself indicate a problem.

Websites in a browser need site permission too
Allowing a browser to access the microphone in Windows does not automatically grant permission to every website opened in that browser. The site may also need microphone access in the browser’s own permission prompt or settings. See Microsoft’s camera, microphone, and privacy guidance.

If the app still cannot hear you
- Check the microphone or headset’s physical mute switch and confirm the device is connected properly.
- If the microphone is built into a camera, check whether camera permissions are also relevant.
- Follow Microsoft’s steps to fix microphone problems if the permission switches are already enabled.
