Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Windows 11 feels slow because memory use is high, first find out which apps are using RAM. Close what you do not need, then work through startup apps and background activity. These steps can ease temporary memory pressure, but they cannot make a demanding workload fit comfortably on a PC with too little RAM.
What high RAM usage means
RAM is the working memory Windows and your running apps use to keep active files and tasks readily available. When memory is under pressure, switching between apps may feel sluggish. A high percentage on its own does not identify the cause: the useful clue is which processes are consuming memory and whether the slowdown persists during your normal workload. Microsoft describes RAM as helping a device do more at once without performance slowdowns in its computer memory guide.

Eight ways to reduce memory pressure
1. Find the apps using memory
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- In Processes, review the Memory column to see which running apps are using the most RAM.
- Use Performance to review overall memory use. Close only apps you recognize and do not need right now.
Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes or disable services as a routine cleanup step. Task Manager can help identify a process, but its name alone may not tell you whether it is safe to stop. See Microsoft’s Task Manager guidance.

Quit programs you are not using and reduce open browser tabs, especially if several contain media or complex pages. Check whether the PC responds better. Keep anything needed for your current task open; closing apps is a way to reduce active demand, not a requirement to minimize RAM use at all times. Microsoft includes closing unused apps and tabs among its Windows performance tips.

3. Restart Windows
If closing apps does not help, save your work and restart the PC. A restart clears the current session’s running apps; once Windows loads, reopen only what you need and check performance before restoring your full workload.
4. Reduce nonessential startup apps
Apps that launch automatically can consume memory before you open them yourself. Review startup items using either path:
- Settings > Apps > Startup
- Task Manager > Startup apps
Task Manager displays startup impact to help inform your choice. Turn off only items you recognize and do not need at sign-in. If you are unsure what a security tool, driver utility, or hardware control does, leave it enabled until you can identify its purpose. Microsoft explains these options in its startup-app guidance.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
5. Limit background activity where Windows offers the control
Some apps support a setting that controls whether they can keep running in the background. For a supported app that does not need continuous background activity, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, choose Advanced options, and set Background app permissions to Never. Not every app provides this setting, and choosing Never may delay background updates or notifications. Microsoft describes background activity as one factor to consider in its performance guidance.
6. Reduce visual effects if responsiveness matters more than appearance
Windows visual effects use system resources. If you prefer a simpler appearance, search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the matching performance options, and select Adjust for best performance. This changes the visual experience; it is not a guaranteed large reduction in RAM use. Microsoft lists visual effects among the factors that can affect performance in its Windows performance tips.
7. Install Windows updates and check disk space
Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Microsoft recommends updates because they can include fixes and performance improvements. Also review Settings > System > Storage; Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations can remove selected temporary or unneeded files.

Disk cleanup frees storage space, not RAM. Storage is where files are kept; RAM is working memory for active apps. Use this step for general maintenance or when the drive is low on space, not as a direct memory fix. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance.
8. Investigate recurring high use and consider hardware limits
If memory pressure returns after a restart, note whether the same app or the same workload consistently drives usage up. That pattern can help distinguish an app-specific issue from a workload that simply needs more memory. Compare the behavior during ordinary use with the behavior when you run your most demanding apps.
Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum RAM for Windows 11 in its system requirements. Its memory guide says 8 GB is recommended for keeping a device running long term, and that 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance work. These are Microsoft’s general guidance, not guarantees of performance for every PC or workload.

Before buying memory, confirm that the exact computer model can be upgraded and identify the type and specifications it accepts. Some PCs cannot be upgraded, and a RAM kit is not universally compatible. Microsoft notes that some computers below the 4 GB minimum may have upgrade options; consult your device manufacturer’s model-specific documentation before choosing parts.

A clean boot can help isolate whether background software is contributing to a problem, but it is an advanced diagnostic rather than a routine RAM cleanup. Microsoft warns that functionality may be temporarily affected and that incorrect changes in System Configuration can make a computer unusable. Use Microsoft’s clean boot instructions only if you are comfortable following them or are working with support. Otherwise, keep the diagnosis to Task Manager and the reversible app-level changes above.
