If Windows 11 keeps changing your time zone, the most direct way to stop it is to turn off Set time zone automatically and select the correct zone yourself. Automatic selection depends on Windows location services, so an unavailable or inaccurate location signal—or a setting controlled by your organization—can make the selected zone differ from the one you expect. Microsoft does not identify one universal cause for repeated changes; the steps below help distinguish a location issue from a setting or management restriction.
First check whether the time zone or the clock time is changing
Windows has separate controls for the time zone and the device clock. The time zone determines how Windows converts UTC into local time; clock synchronization updates the device’s time. A wrong clock reading does not necessarily mean the time zone is wrong.

- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Check Set time zone automatically. If it is on and you want to keep a fixed zone, switch it off, then choose the intended zone under Time zone.
- If the clock itself is wrong, inspect Set time automatically separately. Changing this clock setting is not the same as fixing the time zone.
Microsoft documents these as separate settings in its Windows time, date, and time zone settings guide.

Why automatic time-zone selection can choose the wrong zone
Automatic time-zone selection relies on location services. Windows may estimate a device’s location using GPS, nearby wireless access points and routers, cell towers, an IP address, or a default location. If the available signals do not establish the device’s location reliably, the automatic choice may not match the zone you intend to use. Microsoft describes the connection in its Windows location service and privacy guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
This is especially worth checking on a desktop without Wi-Fi or another reliable location signal. Microsoft recommends setting a default location when Windows cannot determine a more exact one. A repeated change alone, however, does not prove that location detection is the cause; the device’s configuration and management policies can also matter.
Keep the time zone fixed
If you do not want Windows to select a zone based on location, use a manual selection:

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Set Set time zone automatically to Off.
- Choose the correct entry in the Time zone dropdown.
This avoids future automatic zone changes. It is also the more predictable option if you regularly use a device somewhere other than the location represented by its network or default-location signals.
If you want automatic time-zone selection, check location settings
Windows needs location access for automatic time-zone selection. Review both device-level location services and your account’s access setting:

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- Check whether Location services is on. Device-wide location is controlled by an administrator.
- Where available, check Let apps access your location as well. This is a separate, account-level setting and may not appear as an available control when device location is off.
Microsoft says location services enables automatic time zone and Find my device. See its location service and privacy guidance for the controls and their roles.
Set a default location on a desktop or when location signals are limited
- On the Privacy & security > Location page, find Default location.
- Select Set default, enter or select the device’s location, and save it.
A default location gives Windows a fallback when it cannot detect a more exact location. Microsoft specifically recommends this for desktop PCs and devices without Wi-Fi. The option may be unavailable if an administrator manages location settings; see Microsoft’s guidance on Windows location service and privacy.

When a work or school policy may be involved
If a location control is unavailable or Windows says that a setting is managed by your organization, an administrator may have set device-wide location policy. On a work or school PC, ask the organization’s IT administrator whether location access or automatic time-zone selection is restricted. Do not try to bypass a managed setting; the administrator can confirm which options are permitted.
Understand daylight saving and regional format
Daylight-saving adjustment and regional date formatting are related to how time appears, but they are not the same as selecting a time zone. Microsoft documents daylight-saving behavior separately: when Set time zone automatically is on, daylight-saving changes are set automatically; when it is off, a separate daylight-saving control is documented. Details are in Microsoft’s KB914387 daylight-saving configuration guidance.
Regional format controls how dates and times are displayed in apps; it does not itself select the device’s time zone. Microsoft treats regional format and device time zone as distinct settings in its Microsoft Teams settings guidance.
Quick Recap
If the time zone still changes
- Return to Date & time and verify whether Set time zone automatically is still on. If your goal is a fixed zone, leave it off and confirm the selected entry.
- If you want automatic selection, verify that location services are enabled and, where appropriate, that a default location is saved.
- If the relevant controls are unavailable or marked as managed, contact your work or school administrator.
- Check Windows Update and current time-zone data before considering advanced repairs. Microsoft strongly recommends Windows Update or official time-zone updates rather than manually editing time-zone registry data; its KB914387 guidance explains the risks of manual registry changes.
