Microsoft’s download page currently lists Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2, as the latest public stable release (checked August 18, 2026). Download it from Microsoft’s official page, then choose the ISO, Media Creation Tool, or Installation Assistant based on whether you need a clean install, bootable USB, virtual machine, or in-place upgrade.

What is the latest production Windows 11 ISO?
Microsoft’s official Windows 11 software-download page identifies Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2 as the current public production release. This is a stable release, not an Insider Preview build. The standard public download is an x64 multi-edition ISO; Microsoft also provides separate ARM64 media for compatible Arm devices.
An ISO is installation media, not a license. Your product key or existing digital entitlement determines which applicable edition—such as Home or Pro—can be activated. The public consumer ISO should not be treated as the normal Enterprise distribution; Enterprise media is provided through the Microsoft 365 admin center, while Visual Studio subscribers use the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal.
Use Microsoft’s official download page
Go to Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page immediately before downloading. Microsoft generates download links dynamically, and the generated links are valid for 24 hours. An old direct-link address may no longer identify the newest media.

Choose the right download method
| Goal | Best option | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Clean installation or virtual machine | Direct ISO | You must mount it or create bootable media separately. |
| Create USB media for another PC | Media Creation Tool | Requires a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB and erases it. |
| Upgrade the PC you are using | Installation Assistant | Not intended for a clean install or bootable-media creation. |
| Install on Arm hardware | Microsoft’s ARM64 media | The normal x64 ISO and x64 tools are not appropriate. |
| Test unreleased features | Windows Insider downloads | These are preview builds, not stable production media. |
Direct ISO
Use the ISO when you need to keep an image, install Windows in a virtual machine, perform a clean installation, or mount the image for an upgrade. The multi-edition image does not grant every licensing channel or Enterprise edition.
Media Creation Tool
Microsoft’s tool creates USB or DVD installation media without requiring you to configure an ISO yourself. Use a blank USB drive with at least 8 GB; all data on the selected drive will be erased.
Installation Assistant
The Assistant is for upgrading a compatible PC already running Windows. Microsoft lists these prerequisites: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, a Windows 10 or Windows 11 license, at least 9 GB of free space, and an x64 PC. It does not support Arm-based PCs.
Check requirements before downloading
Microsoft’s published minimum hardware figures include a 1 GHz or faster processor with two or more cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB or more of storage, and a processor model covered by Microsoft’s supported-processor policy. See the Windows 11 minimum hardware requirements.
Eligibility also involves compatible firmware, Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. Meeting only the numerical minimums does not guarantee compatibility. Microsoft warns that unsupported installations can have compatibility and support problems and may not receive updates as expected.
- Back up personal files before an upgrade or installation.
- Have stable internet access and enough space for the ISO and temporary files.
- Prepare a blank 8 GB-or-larger USB drive if you need bootable media.
- Confirm your Windows license or activation entitlement.
- Choose the correct language; an upgrade should normally use the language of the existing installation.
How to download the Windows 11 25H2 ISO
- Open https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11.
- Scroll to Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices.
- Select the offered Windows 11 edition and choose Download.
- Select the product language and confirm it.
- Choose 64-bit Download and save the ISO.
- Start the download promptly because Microsoft’s generated link expires after 24 hours.
Media may be refreshed over time. Version 25H2 identifies the release family; it does not guarantee that every cumulative update issued after the image was produced is included.
Create a bootable USB with Microsoft’s tool
- Download Create Windows 11 Installation Media from Microsoft’s download page.
- Run the tool as administrator and accept the license terms.
- Choose Create installation media for another PC.
- Select the language, edition, and architecture.
- Choose USB flash drive.
- Insert a blank USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity.
- Select the correct drive and confirm that its contents may be erased.
- Wait while the tool downloads Windows and creates the bootable media.
Upgrade versus clean installation
Upgrade while keeping files and applications
- Locate the ISO in File Explorer.
- Right-click it, select Properties, and ensure it opens with Windows Explorer if necessary.
- Right-click the ISO and choose Mount.
- Open the mounted virtual disc and double-click
setup.exe. - Follow Windows Setup and select the retention option that keeps your files and applications, if offered.
Running setup.exe from the current Windows installation normally starts an upgrade workflow, not a clean installation.

Clean installation from USB
- Back up personal data and confirm you have installation and activation information.
- Insert the bootable USB and restart the computer.
- Open the manufacturer’s boot menu, commonly with
F2,F12,Delete, orEsc. - Select the USB device.
- In Windows Setup, choose the language, time, and keyboard options, then select Install Windows.
- Follow the partition and installation prompts carefully; deleting partitions can permanently erase data.
After installation, undo any temporary boot-order change so the PC starts from its internal drive.
Verify the ISO
Use Microsoft’s Verify your download option when it is available. If Microsoft publishes a hash for the exact image, calculate the local SHA-256 value in PowerShell:
Get-FileHash "C:PathWindows11.iso" -Algorithm SHA256
Compare the result with Microsoft’s hash for that same release and file. A checksum from an older ISO cannot validate the current 25H2 download. Microsoft also documents this method in its hash-verification guidance.
Troubleshooting common problems
USB does not appear or will not boot
- Recreate the USB with Microsoft’s tool.
- Try another USB port or drive.
- Use the manufacturer’s documented boot-menu key.
- Check firmware boot mode and Secure Boot settings.
- Confirm that the USB device, rather than the internal disk, was selected.
- Restore the normal boot order after installation.
The ISO is too large for a DVD
Microsoft notes that a disc-image-too-large message can appear when burning the ISO. A dual-layer DVD may work, but USB media is generally the more practical choice.

Hardware is blocked or unsupported
A PC can meet basic figures yet be subject to a safeguard hold because of a known driver or application issue. Do not assume that bypassing requirements is harmless: unsupported installs can affect drivers, stability, security, support, and update eligibility.
Wrong language or edition
For an upgrade, match the ISO language to the current Windows installation. The multi-edition ISO does not turn a Home license into Pro; activation follows the applicable product key or digital entitlement.

Activation fails
Downloading or installing the ISO does not provide a free license. Sign in or enter a valid key associated with the installed edition, then check activation after setup.
x64 and Arm confusion
Use ARM64 media on Arm hardware. The standard x64 ISO, Media Creation Tool, and Installation Assistant are not universal architecture installers.
